View Full Version : Down side to 98-96 Cobra cams?

I know that everything in life is a compromise and the same could be said about modding your car. For good or bad there is a reason the factory made the cars the way they did? All that I read about installing 98-96 Cobra cams is the extra torque and horsepower but at what cost. Besides the cost why shouldn't I do this mode?

On a cold start I get this cool little lope in the exhaust. Doesn't effect drive ability at all just sounds neat.
Gas mileage is the same as far as I can tell. 18-19 mixed driving. 4.10's....

The only way to do this mod is with the Cloyes adjustable cams so you can advance them 4 deg. This opens the intake valves a bit sooner and closes them sooner. Less overlap, less intake air loss through the exhaust at lower rpms.
Pros:
More TQ
More HP
Extended RPM Range
Cons:
Expense
(Esp. if you have to pay to have it done and you should get it tuned)

I have a friend at work that was going to help with the install. I was not planning on getting the car tuned. That more the triples the cost of the mod which makes it less attractive.

Are you still running the stock tune?
If so, I question the benefit of doing this mod.

Zack has done this to Kmastl's car, as stated above. Musclemerc will be doing it soon, and will be as well. After Travis does it and I have it done, I will post results.

Here's a little info on it. Massacre, na svt, Racerx, and too many fords probably could give the most info on it as well as :banned: Zack and Musclemerc. A while back this was a heated topic. Maybe the seach guru gods can help you find a thread by travis on cam swap info. I can't seem to locate it.

I'm running a Zack tune 2.0 I think.

What about a aftermarket tune makes this mod more or less successful?

Changing cams changes air flow. If the tune doesn't know the airflow is different, you could find yourself running lean. Maybe even hurt the engine.

Be forewarned, the Z-2.0 is great if you like performance trans shifts, but, it is still not optimized for individual cars and is still coservative as far as timing. I did find an error in covertor lockup in that tune (for anyone that has problems with TC coming out of lockup, I know why). I have a legitimate SCT PRP that I paid for. I have taken Z's trans ideas, manipulated them to my liking, fixed am error two, the entirety of the rest of the tune is my own creation and the spark, fuel, maf tables are totally different from Z's.

That was the problem I had with his tune. The convertor was locking and unlocking constantly and the car was undrivable. I went WOT and when it kicked down to second it instantly locked the convertor which bogged me down to the point that I thought I blew the tranny. The engine ran strong and no pinging.

^^^ This is completely untrue you don't need the adjustable cam gears, just makes the job "easier" haha.
I advanced mine 4 degrees and I don't have adjustable gears.....?

Hell no, Bill. Nothing like that at all.....sorry if it seems that way....
I'm simply pointing out that you don't NEED the adjustable gears to advance the cams. I didn't use them for mine so I just wanted to point that out.
Sorry I don't know how that came across but I have absolutely zero beef with you, I think you know that I like & respect you a lot.

So how did you acheive this advancement?

So how did you acheive this advancement?
You grind away some of the keyway in the cam gear to get it to advance or retard.

I just recently put the "Z"V2 in, and had a weird shifting deal go on in the begining when I first put it in. But, since then haven't had any wierd happenings.
