Is there a remote starter that also allows one to turn the car off? I had to go out in the cold yesterday because I was working 12 hours and wanted to be sure the car would start in the temps after dark. I decided a remote starter is on my list. However, it would be nice to find one that allows me to shut the car off, as well. Then I could do the whole process from my desk.

On another note, I have noticed a possible leak in the trunk seal. Washed the car the other day and found some water (not much) in the trunk - more than what I think would have dripped off the lid (which still pi$$es me off about them dang drips).

Anyway, I call the dealer and ask them to do a water test on it so they can order a new seal. I try to make an appointment for an afternoon I had off and they tell me that's not enough time. Granted it's cold out and the car should warm up first, but what if the cold is causing the seal problem? Also, how long can it take a car to warm up after sitting inside? Especially if you're pouring warm water on it? I plan to be there to watch this part.

They kept telling me they need it all day (this is a dealership that won't give me a loaner because I did not buy the MM from them - of course I would have if they had a 300B and not wanted $35K for it FIRM, but I digress). Makes me think I need to start watching the odometer to see if it's being taken out for joyrides when I'm at work.

So, (after all that rambling) why do they need it all day for a water test, and is there a remote starter that shuts the car off also?

Thanks,
-A

All I can say about the remote start is that you need to choose your installation vendor carefully. Our new cars can be tricky, and some places may even say it cannot be done. It can....but it sometimes proves complicated. They WILL need an extra key from you to imbed in the car with the new starter box. All the remote starts have a timer that will shut off the car after a predetermined amout of time.

As far as the remote starter goes. Most of them will turn the engine off automatically after a certain amount of time. You are able to adjust the time from 5 mins. to 15 mins. Maybe longer.

The remote starter in my CV will start my car automagically if the temp falls below a certain level. I currently have it set to start for 10 minutes every hour if the temp falls below -40. It's a real handy feature.

It's hard on fuel, but I have a block heater, circulating heater and battery warmer. 1500W of power, so the gas usage makes up for itself in electricity.

-40 as in way down where C and F are the same? Dayum it gets below 40F here in Texas we think it is COLD! just kidding spent many months in areas that got that cold. The neat thing about
-40 is all the moisture freezes out of the air about then.

Yup. The very same -40. If it gets that cold again )most likely) I'll post pics of the 'hoar frost'. That when the moisture from the air freezes on everything. Everything is just super brilliant white. Trees, roads, light poles. It's one of the few things I love about Winter.

Some dealers actually farm out the leaks to firms that spcialize in leak fixing. I had my LS in last summer for a trunk leak, and they hired a company called "Leak Doctors" to fix it. Even though it is a known problem with the 2000 Lincoln LS, which requires a new trunk gasket, they managed to just fix it with some free-flowing black rubber goo. (and managed to get it all over the paint, the dash, etc)

So maybe that is why they need the car for a full day.

duhtroll: Mercury/Ford has a remote start for the Marauder.
I had mine installed November '02 it works well.
You can cancel the start by pressing the start button again after the car is running.
I went right to the place where the Ford (not Mercury dealer) sends everything.
These places are "factory authorize" and install "factory accessaries".
Just beware and check part numbers.
PM any question to me if you like.
I also had heated seats installed on a 300A
Some thing you just need:)

"wanted: 5 year old MM, preferably blue. under 50,000 miles."

Comment
The MM (Mercury Marauder) is either the latest version 2003 or a late '60's version. So there are no 5 yr. old cars!
