Chicago police to patrol airports in Segway transporters
1/7/2004

CHICAGO -- Police patrolling Chicago's airports are going to get some high-tech help.

The city has signed a $128,000 contract to buy 28 Segway Human Transporters for officers assigned to terminal patrol at Midway Airport and O'Hare International Airport, officials said.

"They're the best of both worlds, with the mobility of a squad car but the personal contact with citizens of a foot patrol," said Cmdr. Steve Peterson, who was in charge of police at the airports when Segways went through testing.

The machines are two-wheeled, self-balancing, electric-powered scooters. They were unveiled in late 2001 by Manchester, N.H.-based Segway LLC.

The order is one of the biggest by a city since the machines were introduced, company spokeswoman Carla Vallone said. Other cities that have purchased the machines include Atlanta and Seattle, Vallone said.

Most orders have been for police use, she said.

With a top speed of about 12.5 mph, officers aboard Segways during last year's test at O'Hare could get to an emergency call much faster than someone on foot, without alarming passengers, Peterson said.

"You get there faster than you can run, and nobody thinks twice about it," Peterson said.

He said that people also react to the machines in a positive way.

"If you are coming to a stop or going slow, they come up and talk to you about them. They're a great icebreaker," Peterson said.

The Segway was tested by the NYPD. Apparantly they were deemed unusable in NY City.

It's a 2 wheel step on runabout with an gyro to keep it balanced from going unstable while riding. ^^

If any of you guys watch the new Fox sitcom "Arrested Development," is that goofy looking scooter thing that the one character named GOB rides around in, the Segway we are talking about?

Just goes to show that cops are the laziest people out there. It's like driving a police cruzer in O'Hare! No offence to any cops who are members here.

Actually, I believe that those Segways would be a good idea, especially with a top speed of 12 mph. It would also help to reduce LEO fatigue which could definately allow a LEO to work more efficiently and make judgements better if a stressful encounter were to come up. However, i'm curious how far of a range they have on a single battery charge.............

Speed
12.5 mph (20 km/h) eSeries
12.5 mph (20 km/h) iSeries
10 mph (16 km/h) pSeries
Speed can easily be controlled by the user and each Segway HT comes with three distinct keys that allow the top speed to be set according to the riding environment.

Range
(on a single charge)
8 - 12 miles (13 - 19 km) eSeries
8 - 12 miles (13 - 19 km) iSeries
6 - 10 miles (9 - 16 km) pSeries
The range for each model varies with terrain, payload and riding style. Under normal riding conditions, you can expect to ride about 10 miles on a single charge for the i and e Series, and about 8 miles for the p Series. Proper battery care, riding on flat surfaces, and riding at a constant speed will help increase your range.

Payload
eSeries
Rider: 100-250 lbs (45-113 kg)
Rider & Cargo: 260 lbs (118 kg)

iSeries
Rider: 100-250 lbs (45-113 kg)
Rider & Optional cargo: 260 lbs (118 kg)

pSeries
Rider: 100-200 lbs (45-91 kg)
Optional cargo: 10 lbs (4.5 kg)
Depending upon rider size and expected use, choose the machine that fits your needs. While the e Series comes with side cargo bags, Segway offers optional cargo accessories for both the i and p Series.

With that payload, I would need one on each foot...
