View Full Version : Factory Moonroof?

I have been having some leaks from my moonroof and took it to a local place to get it fixed this morning. I thought it was a factory moonroof but was told that it's an aftermarket. I just bought the car from the original owner in late March and he didn't mention that he had it installed as an aftermarket. He is an engineer at Ford and maybe he had it installed by the dealer? It does look pretty good and has the proper overhead console, ect.

Anyways, I was wondering if any of you have a factory moonroof that you can show me a picture of so I can see a difference between the two?

I would really like to see the outside view of the roof and how the inside looks with the trim...Thanks in advance!

I'll post some pics when I get it back...

I thought it was a factory moonroof but was told that it's an aftermarket....

Marauders with the factory moonroof can be identified with the VIN that starts with 2MHHM..... the 3rd digit "H" indicates that the vehicle was incomplete when it left the factory. In this case to get the moonroof.

All other Marauders VIN starts with 2MEHM. If you have a moonroof in a 2MEHM car .... it was "aftermarket".

Interesting...Mine starts with 2MHHM. The guy at this shop told me that he thinks it's aftermarket because when it's factory, the roof is actually stamped out for the moonroof. Mine has a trim piece that goes around the entire perimeter on the roof.

Due to the limited number of Marauders made, and even smaller number with moonroofs, I wonder if Ford didn't bother to stamp out the roofs for the ones with the moonroof option?

Just had the hole cut and installed and they all got the extra trim piece around the outside perimeter...seems to make sense...

Marauder's that were ordered with a moonroof were shipped to ASC with the roof intact. At ASC the moonroof was installed.

The best way to tell if your moonroof is factory is to look at the overhead console.

Post a picture of your overhead console.

This is correct, the entire run of Panthers were not designed for Moonroofs, never had the holes stamped in the roof. Ford just shipped em out for ASC for aftermarket installs and made the headliner parts etc..

The moonroof was not factory in my LX Sport, it was a Webasto Hollianda unit, the same one that the factory uses.

I used a factory overhead console and a series of relays to make the factory switch setup work with the aftermarket moonroof. It looked OEM and I was told it was impossible to do, so.................

Ok, all done and hopefully fixed!

Silicone is still drying and when I got there, the guy corrected himself. Turns out you guys were right about how Ford didn't stamp out the roofs on these cars.

Here are some pics of the car I just took as soon as I got home. There are five of them.

https://www.supermotors.net/registry/media/877012

He said that the inside trim piece shinks over time and you can cut it on the back of it to stretch it out against the sides and corners to reglue it again, then fill in the gap you would have with a piece of matching material.

Anyways, than you guys for all the info.
Even on a post like this, I can still learn something new!

This site is great!

While I like the idea of the sun/moon roof, like jacuzzi tubs in the bathroom they all eventually leak. Take away from your headroom too.

Yeah, just thought of that after posting. I found one from a grand marquis that looked similar; though it was tan... I'll have to keep an eye out for a black one.

I realize this is an old thread...but thanks for providing that info. I've always had issues with my VIN getting automated insurance quotes to work properly through USAA. It has a factory moonroof and the VIN starts with '2MHHM' as well.

As far as the moonroof goes, after 10 years of no trouble on my '04, I noticed water dripping in this morning after a particularly hard rain last night. Of course, it dribbled right onto my pants instead of the passenger side, of course.

Is there a documented procedure to tackle this? I'm assuming the entire headliner is going to have to come out. Thanks.

I probably would've kept my car with the blown engine had it came with a moon roof. Who ever would've thought how hard it would've been to find a premium car with such a common option for EVERY other car in the world to be such a royal PITA to find. A run of the mill Honda Accord EX comes with one standard and its practically optional to not have one lol.

The other easiest way to tell if the sunroof is a factory one is if it has 'Carlite' etched on the middle bottom part of the sunroof glass.
