View Full Version : Marauder = 57 Chevy?

I have heard this a few times from "Old Timers" as THEY like to call themselves. "The Marauder is the modern 57 Chevy. It's the coolest car in quite a while and will be a very popular collectors car. People might not understand now, but they will later."
I have heard this statement by multiple people in their 50s and 60s. I know they have seen the 57 Chevy rise up to a collector car. Does anyone agree with this statement or feel the same way? I'm uncertain about this.

I have never heard this and I do not think the Marauder will ever be as iconic as a '57 Chevy is.
FWIW I hate the tri-5 Chevys.
It's a nice thought but 11,052 vs probably over a million, nope don't think so...
The '82-'93 Mustang is the modern '55-'57 Chev... A complete aftermarket grew up around them...

Yep, or even the Honda Civic has been compared to it. The 57 Chevy was popular because there were alot of them and they were cheap and easy to build. The Marauder is none of those things.

An interesting tidbit I heard from a 57 owner but I've never been able to verify. There were ~47,000 57 convertibles built but there are more than that titled today due to the number of conversions done. Pretty popular car to grow in numbers over the year...

There is no "modern-day" '57 Chevy, and I would question the logic of anyone who even makes that statement.
Cars back then- the way they were produced, the way they were advertised, heck even the way people drove, was very different and cannot be duplicated.
There may be a modern car or two that might remind one of certain traits of a '57 Chevy, but to call anything being made today "the modern" version is laughable.
And just for the record I like '55s and '56s better than the '57. But that's just me.

Not to rain on your parade Motorhead but I for one have not heard that comparison? Maybe it's a midwest thing?
I have no issues with car people making statements like that however we all know opinon's are like azzholes....everyone has one:)
I myself would never compare a Chevy to a Ford, Dodge,Honda, etc except like models for reasons of buying one. That said I guess it all the the mindset of the person who makes the statements look at it.
To each his own!
FYI the one comparsion I dislike the most is usally at the pumps by someone driving a eco-box saying to me..."nice car I bet is sucks gas?" or Cool looking old police car, nice job filling in all the holes, how did you get the donut smell out of it?
In cases like the this it is simple better to just (in my case) stare down and them and give 'em the a brief history of the mercury marauder!

Jim, someone first said that to me in Florida, so I guess it's a Dirty South thing.
I wish I had someone ask me something like that at the gas pump. I have a number of answers...
No sir, it's better TO gas then your car, here's your sign.

Never heard of the comparison, but I truly believe 30 plus years from now the MERCURY MARAUDER will be a collector, and if not I don't care it's valuable to me!

I've always liked 'em, but the '56 is my favorite year.

Us old timers love the 55-57 Chevy because most of us owned one or had a close friend that had one.
(I fall in both categories. I had a 57 BelAir 4dr hardtop, three speed Hurst, 283/220 powerpack; my friend, Jerry, had a 57 BelAir convert, 1958 Buick grille, station wagon bumper; my buddy Bobby had a 55 2 dr sedan, hot rod; another Bobby had a 57 BelAir hardtop, which blew the doors off my 57. Nobody had 56's.)
Not the same with the Marauder.

Keep dreaming
no one cares.
This chassis platform is to me the best. Full frame, full size, RWD, V8, etc., etc.
Plenty of parts, easy to work on, safe, reliable, etc., etc.
We all know why these cars are awesome, otherwise we wouldn't be here.
But The MM is not a Shelby Cobra Daytona Coupe or a Boss 429 Mustang or a 427 SOHC drag car.
It is a Grand Marquis with FACTORY performance, handling, interior and exterior modifications.
I already voiced my opinion on why I think these cars are great, so don't get the wrong idea. But I'm pretty sure a MM is not a tri-5 Chev no matter how much someone wants to pretend that it is....
Maybe for that person it represents that sort of thing but that is not the popular view (like sXe).
Dom, if the MM is your '57 Chevy then more power to you.....
I don't see the resemblance but if you do, then good for you.
In fact, I wanna see gold fins on your car ASAP

Rob, I think you are kinda missing the point. The statement has nothing to do with looks of the car.
Old Timers... thanks for your info. In the end it's all opinion I suppose, but 57s are in demand. Fact. Hmmmmmm confusing.

Nope.
It's not a '57 Chevy no matter how hard you wish it was.
YOU were the one who said that people SAW the car, and made the comment.
Since I'm going to assume that they weren't blindfolded, I'm going to say that they made the comment after seeing the car.
Therefore the look of the car influenced the decision to some degree.
Now obvious troll is obvious, so that's all i gotta say about that.

Did you guys know Ford actually out sold Chevy in '57???

Yes, we knew, but not back then.
Ford also outsold Chev in 59, which got Ford all upset because when they first saw the 59 Chev, they crash/designed the 60 Ford as a "comparable" design.
I thought the 57 Ford was a beautiful car except for the front end. IMHO, could have been designed a little better, but the sides and rear were very classy. In 58, Ford went backwards.
The 57 Chev was a styling hit because, according to one old car mag in the late 50's, "Chev made a baby Cadillac".

The Marauder will probably be remembered the same as the Buick GN and 94-96 Impala SS. They're just throwbacks from the full-size cars from the pre-muscle car era, when the only way to go fast was to put the biggest engine into the biggest car. The Galaxy 427, Original Marauder, Buick Wildcat, 409 Chevy Impala and such were good comparisons. The GN doesn't quite fit the mold, but the all black styling matches the MM and SS.

Correct--not the same category--but the tri-5's so to speak made what we know today--the string muscle cars and their changes over time--that's when Chevy add V-8's and start the HP wars

Yes they are ---as said below--Ford out sold Chevy 2-1 that year--and started a downward trend for Chevy that hurt for many years to come-- but yet today--the '57 is ion more demand and on $$$ too!
Not me my first car was a '57 FORD, and it'd still be my choice...
Did you guys know Ford actually out sold Chevy in '57???
Yes they did--^^^^ bad I know from first hand experience--cause my Dad was a Chevy dealer from '48 to '58 and I remember him telling me one Saturday morning in his store--"we are losing bad 2-1 over those Fords--its gonna be a bad year"--I was 10 and the next year my Dad lost his Dealership----
Yeah --a car that was not wanted that is now and for a lot--my Dad would be proud to know that now---.....BTW--It was my first car I every drove--at 10 --but that's another story--if your interested----

Went to a car show tonight, and a 57 Chev was parked next to a late 50's Caddie.
Definite similarities, especially the grill and "dagmars" (rubber tipped bumperguards).
You can see the evolution with the 56 and 55 Chev, but the 57 was all on it's own (except for the identical rooflines), as was the 58.
In 58, Ford went backwards.
Yeah but for the exception of Plymouth, about all '58s were just plain gaudy... The Plymouth quad headlights actually looked at least as good, if not better than the 57s...

Don't know if I'd call the 58 Impala a gaudy car.
Compared to the 57, over the top a bit, but it could certainly pass for a much more expensive car than a Chevy.
The gaudiest 58?
Oldsmobile.
After a beautiful 57 Olds model, how could GM ever try to market that chrome barge?
Thank you George Lebay.

OK gaudy was a bit extreme but no doubt the General did go on a chrome binge for '58... The Olds, Buick & Caddy all had their fair share... The mostly out of place appearing quad head lights tacked on many models was some what repeated in '73-'74 when the 5mph bumpers were first mandated...

Agreed, Buick was way over the top, but the Caddy was a .....Caddy.
You are correct though, not one of the better years for US autombile styling.
Few exceptions, ex: 58 Bonneville,
