Foodstamps are less to do with feeding the hungry and more to do with a govt funded price support for big business grocery chains and corporate food manufacturers. Additionally, WIC is a govt funded support to keep Wisconsin dairy farmers happy along with Kraft Inc, Con-Agra ect... See who howls first if these programs ever get scaled back.

Interesting???? People on food stamps buy more food that has a higher profit margin from Big Grocery and Big Food than people not on Food Stamps? That explains why I see all the expensive foods in the food stamp baskets.

Big Grocery and Big Food opposed Welfare Reform? I missed that one.

From 1948-2008 whenever Fed spending exceeded 20% of GDP for 2 or more years unemployment went up 50% or more regardless of wether the GDP grew or shrank. Per the CBO Pres Obama's 10 year Budget issued in 2009 forecast Fed spending of 21.5%+ through 2019. Fed spending is currently 25%+ of GDP.

This will keep ~8mm people unemployed who should not be.

The "Stimulus" eliminated Welfare Reform by eliminating the caps.

At current Fed speding increases of 8% per year Fed spending will double every 9 years. At GDP growth of 1.5% per year Fed spending will equal 100% of our GDP in ~26 years.

Rolling back the Bush Tax Cuts on those making over $250K per year generates $70Billion per year against a Deficit of $1.65Trillion.
Confiscating 100% of the income of those who make over $200K per year will come clsoe to eliminating the Deficit.

We should all work for the Gov't, make less than $200K per year and only invest in TBills. That is the Presidents Economic Plan. It has worked so well in Cuba, N. Korea and Cambodia that they have an immigration problem.

It should be called the EBT program. Ever notice the EBT button on the terminals when you pay with a credit card? It says Credit, Debit and EBT, or Electronic Benefit Transfer. Yes, they are sent a debit card instead of food STAMPS. I guess it was too humiliating for them to be seen using foodstamps, so some liberal decided to give them a government debit card.
Then, per reports I've seen, they buy food, return it for cash because it's the only way a return can be done, and use the money for booze, cigarettes and drugs. Nice to see our tax dollars at work.

And since you went there; if you even dare propose a drug test as part of the application for food stamps, EVERY single democrat will tell you that costs money and all of a sudden they're fiscally conservative. :lol:

If giving handouts to the poor is really just another way of subsidizing the wealthy, I don't know how to make it fair. Confiscate all wealth from everyone making over 50k per year? Oh, I know! Equal outcomes for everyone! As long as those outcomes are equal to the people making more than me. :D:o

"The Schwarzenegger administration is cutting off use of state-issued welfare debit cards at casinos across the country and on cruise ships, following a Times report that the aid cards have been used to spend or withdraw millions of dollars in benefits at popular vacation spots.

More than $69 million meant to help the needy pay their rent and clothe their children was accessed in 49 other states, the U.S. Virgin Islands and Guam between January 2007 and May 2010, according to data from the California Department of Social Services."

It is way cheaper for any Goverment (State or Fed.) to issue a debit card and refill every two weeks than to print checks and mail them out.

Who can get food stamps?

Anyone can apply for food stamps. To get food stamps, you and the other people in your household must meet certain conditions. Everyone who is applying in your household must have or apply for a Social Security number and be either a U.S. citizen, U.S. national or have status as a qualified alien.
The following qualified aliens are eligible for food stamps without a waiting period:

Legal immigrant children under age 18;
Blind or disabled legal immigrants who receive disability assistance or benefits;
Individuals born on or before August 22, 1931, and who legally resided in the United States on
August 22, 1996;
Lawful permanent residents who are active duty members or veterans of the U.S. armed forces or a spouse or a child of a veteran or active duty service member;
Refugees admitted under section 207 of the Immigration and Nationality Act (INA);
Asylees under section 208 of the INA;
Deportees or removal withheld under section 243(h) or 241(b)(3) of the INA;
Cuban or Haitian entrants under section 501(e) of the Refugee Education Assistance Act of 1980;
Amerasian immigrants under section 584 of the Foreign Operations, Export Financing and Related Programs Appropriations Act of 1988.

The following legal aliens are eligible *without a waiting period even if they are not “qualified aliens:

Hmong or Highland Laotian tribal *members (including their spouses and children)
who helped the U.S. military during the Vietnam era;
American Indians born in Canada;
Members of Indian tribes under section 4(e) of the Indian Self-Determination and Education Assistance Act (25 U.S.C. 450b(e)).

The following qualified aliens are eligible if they have lived in the U.S. for five years in qualified status:

Lawful permanent residents (they may be *eligible sooner than five years if they have
40 work credits);
Parolees (paroled for at least one year under section 212(d)(5) of INA);
Conditional entrants under 203(a)(7) of INA in effect prior to April 1, 1980;
A battered spouse, battered child or *parent or child of a battered person with a petition pending under 204(a)(1)(A) or (B) or 244(a)(3) of INA.

Most able-bodied people between the ages of 18 and 60 must register for work to qualify for food stamps. Many people may be required to participate in an employment or training program. Some college students also may be eligible.

Rats, :mad2:as a middle five figure income American born citizen, I don't qualify for nothing, except the ability to pay taxes :depress:........I think I need to be some kind of alien........gotta keep looking for an angle........:coffee:

My food stamp story....

Was behind a family in checkout line. Mother, Father, two small girls....Two shopping carts. In the one cart, a gallon of milk, a package of generic cheese slices, two jars of generic peanut butter, a loaf of white bread. Guess what those little girls were getting for dinner. In the other cart....Two cases of beer and a couple of bottles of wine. They paid for the first cart with food stamps, the second cart from a wad of twenties he fished out of his pocket.

Really? :mad2:

Federal Government Tries to Stop Food Stamp 'Water Dumping' Fraud

The federal government is moving to crack down on a bizarre form of food-stamp fraud that's flushing away taxpayer dollars.

The scam is called "water dumping." It works as follows: Food stamp recipients use their benefits to purchase water bottles and from there promptly dump the water out and redeem the bottles for cash.

As long as there is a way to make money off food stamps, people will be scamming. In ancient Egypt times, people traded food stamps for sex at the local brothels. I just made that up, but how cool would that be? Rolling up to the red-lamp district in your ox cart, wooden 24 Fo's. Mad stacks of clay food stamps, ready for action. Rub some mud under your armpits to hide the smell of fishing all day, cause that's what they used for deoderant back then, a little red mud. Okay, I made up the deoderant mud, too. But how cool would that be, yeah, baby!

When you pledge your life savings to start a business and work, work, work to make money you get very upset when Gov't puts a gun to your head to take your money and give it to an underserving BUM denying you, your employees and our families from the use of what we have earned.

http://www.usatoday.com/money/industries/food/story/2011-09-05/More-restaurants-are-targeting-customers-who-use-food-stamps/50267864/1

Saw this article today and it reminded me of our recent thread. I think it shows how many of these programs are manipulated by big business (like Yum! brands) rather than the poor. Im certain groups representing poor folks havent been lobbying the government to allow people to use food stamps to by Applebees or KFC or whatever. Its the restaurant lobby that is pushing crapola like this. If approved will folks use food stamps there? Sure they will. That doesnt make it right.
