Anyone we know? Seemed to be an Impala SS, or not stock for sure.

I love news people. Quote from the 'well duuuuuuh' department: "There appears to be only one driver in the car. . ."

The guy in the helicopter got on my nerves. He kept talking about how the suspect was pulling away from the cops with his raw power. That's BS. The cops were simply slowing down occasionally and not taking the reckless chances the suspect was. After the road was clear it seemed like the cops would pull back up on his bumper easily.

This has been around for a while now. The story goes that the Impala SS belonged to a cop and was stolen. The car had slight mod's and was caught after he ran out of gas.

I would say that the engine gave out for sure at those speeds, fuel starvation, inadequate lubrication, overheating trans., ect, ect, ect..... :mad2:

Note to self: 1) Fill up on gas before high speed chase. 2) steal car with bigger radiator. :)

Are you shure thats an SS? From the rear shots after the car is stopped I'd be willing to bet money that's a Marauder. It has the right tail lights and the round center badge on the back of the trunk lid. I don't think the SS has a round badge on the trunk - but then again I don't own one. Enlighten me if I'm wrong please.

To quote:

The suspects high-powered car, apparently a late model maroon Chevy Impala, easily sped away from pursuing troopers on open stretches of the Interstate. After a second and successful attempt with stop sticks, the suspect's car came to a stop just miles before the I-44 / I-35 junction where he was quickly taken into custody

If he woulda had a MM the boy would STILL be runnin'!! Chevy power was good....till it EXPLODED all over the road!!! LMAO

It was either a 1995 or 1996 DCM SS. Our limiters are set from the factory at 154 mph or @ 5400-5500 rpm.

Well that was fun. But I'll keep my MM though.

Thanks for the clarification 'Bama! I thought it looked like a Marauder too..

Don't be too upset with the helicopter guy, he was stating a fact. The cops could only catch him when he got slowed down by traffic. When it opened up the CVs just disappeared.

Point is, a CV PI with a light bar on top, extra weight, a 4.6l SOC V8 and numerous other drag inducing add-ons isn't going to keep up with an Impala SS or an MM. Heck, even the news helicopter was dropping back. I've talked to a few State Troopers and they loved their Caprice 9C1s. One said, "I never got out run" in the Caprice, which was as fast if not faster then the Impala SS.

The keyword above is apparently. The word is used by the same news crew who repeatedly said it was a Cadillac too. They even mention having called the Cadillac dealership to see what speeds the car was capable of.

Best argument in the world for the cops to have their chips reflashed and take the 130 mph speed limiter off. Until then, Mr. Motorola just doesn't cut a 154 mph chip any slack. :)

That's not the fault of the car. The POLICE INTERCEPTOR is speed limited to 130 mph. At about 128 or 129 mph a stock POLICE INTERCEPTOR bogs down. I'm not dissing the Impala SS, I use to own a '96 Burnt Cherry myself. But people are comparing apples to oranges here now, simply because of computer governors. Back when I had my 1973 Plymouth 440 Gran Fury in service I could stay beside any Impala SS, reach out the window, and wax his/her back fender for them at 155 mph. :)

....even the news helicopter was dropping back.

Again, I don't know anything about helicopters. But the reporter in the helicopter clearly said he was past his maximum sustainable speed of the particular ship he was flying..... he called it being in the "yellow zone", a zone he could only stay in for a maximum of 5 minutes safely. So, what is the helicopter's highest sustainable speed? 125 mph? 130 mph? He would be crazy to risk blowing up a multi-million dollar helicopter just to keep up with some idiot running from the police.

I took the image from the web page site quoted above, and blew it up in a Paint Shop Pro program. Once blown up it takes on the appearance of a fasback, IMHO. Much like a Cadillac STS. I still think the news crew had it right the first time.... a Cadillac. Doesn't mean I am right though.

You're right, in fact you are dead on here. It was not an Impala SS as eye witnesses stated, it was in fact a (Cadillac / Marauder) as the TV anchor and others here have stated. The CVs are just as fast if not faster but they were just falling behind (so as not to endanger anyone / because their PI's were speed limited to 130).

I stand corrected! :P  :bows:
