View Full Version : Why would a dealer sell a car they can't service?

:mad2: Good question, and one I intend to ask Mercury.

If you read any of my thread about abnormal tire wear on my MM at 15K, you'll know I found the inner tread on my fronts were wearing fast, a sign of excessive negative camber and/or toe out. I scheduled an appointment to take my car to my selling dealer, Champion Lincoln Mercury in Birmingham, to have an oil and filter change, an alignment, and my 15K checkup. Simple. When I made the appointment (in person), I asked the service writer if they had the proper adapters and the specs for a Marauder, which he said they did. I also got the bad news that at 15K, there would be no free alignment, even though I bought the car with 6K as a demo. Okay, needs to be done do it.

Today, an hour and a half of drinking coffee and thumbing through magazines in the lounge, I decide to go over to parts to see what they would charge for a spoiler. I notice my car is parked outside in the area where they park cars when they are ready to be picked up, an my service writer runs up to me saying, "uhh, sorry man. We can't do the alignment. Our equipment can't grab those 18" wheels." He then runs over to the stand up desk, grabs a yellow pages, and makes a call. I hear him say "Hey..this is Champion.. can you guys do an alignment on a Marauder? Yeah, it's got those big 17" (sic) wheels... you can? No, customer is gonna pay. Good." He hangs up and tells me that some local tire dealer can "fit me in" if I go right away.

Excuse me? Alignments are SCHEDULED MAINTENANCE. You can't perform a scheduled maintenance? And what if "Joe's Tire" damages my car or sets it up wrong, is LM going to honor the warrantee? Is Joe going to enter the alignment into OASIS? :fire:

I an extremely annoyed with Champion! In all fairness, they have given me great service in the past and performed maintenance and repairs on other Mercury cars I bought elsewhere. They have been friendly. But, grrr....

I think this service writer is a dip*****, because this same guy was the one who sent me off with a bad door control module. I took the car back a couple of weeks later when he was off, and the service writer who helped me called a tech over, they talked a minute, then "no problem, Mr. Carlson. Sorry you're having trouble. We'll change that module out for you and it'll only take about 15 minutes..." I mean GREAT service.

I am going to complain to Mercury about this. I think they should tell me just which LM dealer in the Birmingham, AL area is READY to service Marauders, and is WILLING to service these cars, even if they were bought at Champion.
I have to be able to protect my warantee, and sending me out to some non-LM tire dealer is NOT ACCEPTABLE.

There is a silver lining in this. I took the car to Saab Tire in Birmingham. They have a web site www:saabtireandautomotive.com . They are an authorized installer for Tire Rack, and have the right equipment to align and service MM's. The owner, Charlie Saab, LOVES Marauders. They are supporters of the local Porsche club, and I even noticed from photos in their showroom they sponsor a Porsche racer. While I was there at least 5 Porches of different vintages came in. Their alignment tech knew how to align the Marauder, had the right specs. He showed me my car had both excessive negative camber AND toe out, the right was worse than the left. They were able to salvage the fronts, so I'm good to go for at least another 5-7K.

Best part was Charlie Saab -- the owner and a busy guy -- personally test drove my MM to see if the alignment and balancing was right (They have the Hunter 9700 Road force variation oem matching system and use Corghi Atrigliomaster Tire mounting machines) not once but THREE TIMES (he took it back over to the alignment tech twice for tweaks) before driving it right up to where I was sitting, getting out with a big grin saying "Okay, I'm satisfied now. It's perfect. And this is a GREAT car!" He even called over some of the wrenches saying "This is like those old classic muscle cars, guys."

BTW, I could tell when my car was started and moved out for the test drives. It's like being able to recognise the voice of your child or good friend.
I could hear that throaty growl which was different than the sound of the Porche's and other cars. :coolman:

I agree Donny!

I've been insulted at 3 FLM dealerships. The lack of knowledge is only surpassed by the arrogance.

I agree 100% with your complanit. The selling dealer makes all the differance in the world. Marauder it seams brought all the worst in certian dealers, while other have done a bang up job!

This type of story reminds me of all the headaches we had ten years ago on the SHO. Every Ford dealer in the world knew what a Taurus was, but when it came to the SHO they were completely lost if it was an engine related problem. Too bad you can't sell a car and be able to service it too....

Dealers do make all the difference in world when push comes to shove, so here I go!
Thanx to the guys 'n gals of the Suburban Collection out here in Waterford! I drove in, unannounced, on Friday. Car was put into the bay on Monday, a complete tranny overhaul done and my car was ready Tuesday evening. I picked her up on Wednesday and could NOT be happier with the service I received. Too bad it's snowing as bad as it is, 'cause I can't wait to romp on the pedal again ;)

I agree had a simular thing with my selling dealer, first I called for an appoitment and was told they could not do an alignment. Then they also said NO other Mercury dealer could. THEN it was well call a Ford dealer they do trucks they can handle 18" wheels. After 6 phone calls to differant Ford dealers I went to NTB. The "straw" with the Last Ford dealer was "what kind
of SUV is that again"!!!!!!!

BUT thanks to this site and the folks of the Lone Star Cougar Club I think I found a good dealer.

I and many others have had similar problems. I've been to 4 different dealers for service in Knoxville and gotten less than satisfactory results. Then I found out about Team Ford in Marietta GA. It's worth the 200 mile drive to get good service. It's probably closer than that for you to go there from B'ham.

Been there, done that, still havent found a good alignment shop. Took to dealer, said they couldnt do the alignment. Called merc and complained. They sent me to a svt dealer. They said no problem and messed up my alignment worse than before and scratched my rims. Called merc and complained. They told me tuff luck. The svt dealer sent my rims out and had them chromed. So, now i have a car without an alignment, bad tires and nice looking rims. Sucks!

Hey Donny,

Good luck complaining to Mercury. The 1-800 number has been about as worthless to me as cat litter is to a dog. I can never get any satisfaction from them. I called that line many times when I owned my Mark VIII. Most dealers are so difficult to work with and most repairs are never double checked. Mercury's excuse is "we are not responsible for the actions of INDEPENDANT dealerships." What a crock. The dealer represents the product the company sells, don't they? I wish there were a place we could call and ACTUALLY get our problems resolved.

In fairness, I do have a dealer that does all my service. It is a Ford dealer. They have always given me great service and are located in the small town of, Arlington, WI. I found them when the Madison L/M dealer was jerking me around w/ my Mark. Being a Ford dealer, I don't know if they could align a Marauder. All in all, I have to drive 30 miles for good Ford service. That shouldn't be the case. Every other blue oval dealership has given me the runaround, and so has the customer assistance line. I'm glad you got your MM aligned. Good luck with future hell, I mean, dealership visits!

It's a long shot, but anyone called a race prep shop in their area and asked them if they can or would do this alignment for you?

Yes, it's 'old school' but I can still align a car with fish line as well as you'll get on some computer. Time consuming yes, but the technique is sound.

Sorry, it's my business....but NO, I don't do cars with fenders! You guys in Atlanta; try the Panoz shop!

I don't know what the Panoz shop in ATL does, but I do know what a race shop in Chicago Ridge can do.

Around here, Mike Lopez and his "High Speed Performance" race shop offers us the same thing...Real time race stuff.

Mike bragged to me that he could align my front end by "measuring." When I doubted him, he reminded me that he drives 200 MPH for a living, and looking around his race shop, Mike is not bragging.

Once I get my new tires and refinished wheels in place, Mike Lopez will do his "fish line" alignment for me. I'll let y'all know how this drives, K?

Meanwhile...Who are these guys? 200 MPH for a living? Jeeze!

There's a whole nuther world outside the dealerships.....Hope it works out well for you.

(let us know if it gets you to 200mph too, ok?)
