I have a 2000 Town Car with 120,xxx, which I use as my DD. I was wondering if a J-MOD would be beneficial as to preserving the transmission. (I read on some crownvic forum that it can be done to panthers 1998 and up). I don't abuse the car, nor do I drive it in any other way than a Town Car was meant to be driven, I'm just looking for tranny longevity.

You can do it to any 4R70W. Did it on my 95 Thunderchicken 7+ years ago...

...although I question the necessity. There are thousands of Town Cars used as limos for hundreds of thousand of miles with little or no transmission maintenance. I would think that just changing the fluid periodically would put you ahead of the curve...

I did the J-Mod on my MM around 155k miles on it I think.

Awesome point! I actually had a tranny cooler on the Thunderchicken, totally forgot about that! :beer:

I'd think the only issue you'd really have is with the OD band wearing out from hard downshifts on the highway. Shift kit won't help with that.

I would leave the Town Car unmodified.

Yeah good points there, I'm just driving about 50 miles round trip on straight back roads, and if brutally abused NYC taxis can reach 300k + unmodified I guess I should be alright.

Just keep the maintenance up on it. If you plan on keeping it a while, it might be a good benefit to get a trans pan with a drain plug in it, every 3rd/4th oil change change out 4-5 qts of fluid and go on your merry way. If the transmission has never been serviced def get the filter changed soon at least.

None really besides a little less money in your wallet I would guess. People who have it done and then jack up their shift pressure stand a better chance of something breaking.

DOOM has his done and I believe his shift pressure in his tune is set to 0% and it's perfect, at least I think and I'm sure he does.

A friend of mine had his done on his Mark 8 and had it up so high (built trans though) barely even half throttle and it was barking the tires enough a cop actually stopped him for squealing wheels. lol

Just print off the instructions and take it to a trusted wrench.

Well, its hard to decide. I don't want my wifes neck to break. She won't drive it now as it is.

But, if it prolongs the trans life then I might be game.

I went with keeping the 1-2 spring and no 2-3 spring. Stock pressures I really like how it shifts.

I went with keeping the 1-2 spring and no 2-3 spring. Stock pressures I really like how it shifts.
For a stock DD cruising car this is what I would do.
