I've used 5W-20 Synthetic Blend in both my cars with good results.
I may switch to a slightly heavier grade (say, 5W-30) in the near future due to the installation of my S/C, but if you're NA the 5W-20 will do just fine.

of course if you swap to S/C you may need to upgrade the oil degree and Full Synthetic
I hope you do it soon

Good to see you reppin the marauder in SA. Isn't your standard gas 98octane for like $1.50per gallon?
I use Motorcraft 5W-20................. In my 81 year old mom's Grand Marquis, but I'm not about to use it in my Marauder...

Now that I read that - is it safe to switch from rp 5w20 to 5w30 cold turkey? Or should I phase half 20 half 30 my next change and ease into the switch?

Been here, done this...1,000 times over...Again and again, and here we go again.
Geese...Another "oil" thread...Do a search for your Q and A, eh? Then come back to us with some "new" developments?
Until then, all you are going to read, will read like a "voter's registration" web site about personal choices, at tims with over-the-top votes.
Myself...Been through 3 Marauders with plain-jane 4V engines, alot more of 2V, and 3V engines before and after the Marauder, both supercharged and N/A., including a 4 cylinder Fox body 'vert auto. to answer your question (and please try not to double quote) (and please try not to double quote)...
Marauder 4V = 5W20 engine oil. Motorcraft seems the best. Best recommended, best performance, and least expensive too. Some dealers offer "bulk" fills, others retail by the quart. Your choice, all the same stuff. More costly "full synethic" bottle fills are not cost worthy. Best oil (of any description) is CLEAN OIL, so, 2500 to 3000 miles, with fresh filter (perhaps 4 times a year for most Marauder owners, your personal use may expand on this) is the best (IMHO) program to adopt.
Our resident "oil-spert" should be checking in soon.

Im no "oil-spert", but it calls for 5W20, so it get 5W20. Of the Mobil 1 full Synthetic flavor. No smoke, no fuss, no noises....

You can do a full switch whenever you want.
For those that didn't look at the link I posted here are the highlights:
I spent about 10 years doing engine development with Ford Motor Company
I've probably looked at several hundred engines disassembled and spread out on inspection tables. And I've been involved in testing to resolve issues where varying the oil viscosity was part of the test DOE. Trading a very small FE improvement in exchange for a large durability safety margin.
I would not run 5W-20 in ANY stock mod motor. This is especially true in 4v motorsEveryone is welcome to make their own determination as long as you realize you're ignoring the advice of someone who actually has done the testing in an OEM capacity and vehemently recommends against 5W-20 for durability reasons.

I've stayed using 5W20. First oil change I started using Amsoil before they raised their prices then switched to Royal Purple for a while then they raised the price on that and switched to Mobil 1 and have been using that for a few years now.

Motorcraft doesn't mfgr oil, it originates from Conoco/Phillips... Yes it's good oil for a NA application...

I find the cheapest stuff and a bottle of Lucas. I change every 3K and don't hammer on it at the moment. BTW I have a S/C.
use what the manufacturer recommended, those engines have a fine tolerance in them, if you use ticker oil your engine will not get proper lubrication, the grade is recommended for a reason ,dont try to out smart the people that made the engine.
good luck with your choice.

good luck with your choice.
Not so, if that were the case the engine would starve for oil when cold and the oil was 1500-2000% thicker than when hot...

dont try to out smart the people that made the engine.
The people that made the engine designed it for 5W-30.
What was the oil recommended for the 2v/4v engines from 91/93 to 2000?
5W-30
What was changed in the modular engines in 2000 that caused Ford to switch to 5W-20?
Nothing. Ford switched to trade a slight increase in MPG with a slight increase in wear.
o.k 5w30 ill go for that but not like some say 10w30 or 10w40 why?? i have a coworker with crown vic he got over 270000 miles with motorcraft syn bland 5w20, the car still runs great, works for ford works for my friend gotta work good for me to,ill stick with it.

Ford has done extensive testing on 5W-20, as have Honda and Toyota, to verify its suitability for every kind of use, from Arizona heat to northern Maine cold.
15 years ago, 5W-30 would shear down to a 20-grade in a few thousand miles. Today's 5W-20 formulations are much more robust and shear-stable and stay in grade a lot longer. Unless you have a monster motor, there's no need to use anything else.
i just got a 300C with a HEMI engine that also recommends 5w20,lets call them dumb to and use 20w50,F*&^*$,they dont know what they doing.

Why would you go to a heavier weight old if S/C'd?
Why would you go to a heavier weight old if S/C'd?
Bearing and piston side loads should be considered, the thicker the oil(to a point), the less prone it is to be squeezed off the bearing or cylinder wall... Not enough lubrication is what scuffs pistons and scores bearings...
Ford swapped to 5W-30 for the 2011 Ecoboost V6 after specking 5W-20 in the '10 Taurus versions...
For the 3v 4.6, Ford has said it's OK to use 10W-40 to reduce cam phaser noise, on the ones they receive service complaints... Only limitation was they said it should not be used below -20F...
http://members.cox.net/turbocoupe50/dealerr.jpg
Lastly a 30W oil is often only 10-20% thicker than a 20W, the range of 20W is 5.6 to 9.2cSt, while a 30W is 9.3 to 12.5cSt, in theory there could be less than 2% difference between the grades(and no doubt has happened)... Even a 40W may only be 30-35% thicker than a 20W, all depends on base oil and how it is blended...
For those who don't understand, this makes for a interesting read...

Jeez I switched to 5W-20 this year partly due to the TSB about coolant flow and valve seat damage on the Marauder engines. Don't have this book marked can find it later.
I was always a 5W-30 guy up to that point, plus now you can actually find 5 qt jugs of the 5W-20 at Wally mart now.
