For the 2nd time in less than 2 yrs I'm having to replace my rack due to leaks from high pressure lines and at the steering shaft input. Got this done back Jan 2010 and having to do it again now. The original one lasted 7 yrs but the replacement less than 20 months. Is it possible I just got a bad rack the first time? Did it not help that I only drove it a total of 10,000 miles in 20 months? I haven't gotten it back from the dealer yet, but I will be paying close attention to this issue as I can't afford a 3rd time.

How I noticed this was a very hard u-turn and then the pump screaming at me that it was dry. Checked the level and it was abt 2-3 inches below the minimum mark.

What's the history of your MM?
How many miles?
Any accidents?
I don't know of any MMs that have your issue, that part usually doesn't fail.

Dealer serviced. No accidents. I'm the second owner, took possession at 29k, 5 yrs ago. Have 100k on it now. Runs good otherwise.

Yes replaced Oem at 90k with new Oem.

Have you got a picture of the leak?

No pictures. But looking down the drivers side right below where the steering shaft connects to the rack, there is a flat surface on the rack and that's where I noticed pooling of liquid.

What kind of Rack are putting in? Is it a Motorcraft or Genuine Ford or generic? New or reman? Is it a Marauder one or does the shop not know the difference and ordering one for a Marquis

It's a Ford dealer doing the work. I haven't asked but I would assume he is putting the correct part in. I don't know if marquis rack is the same as marauder rack but I will def ask. When he gave me the parts and labor break down, the rack was almost $450.

Anything new has a chance of being crap...

Current supplier/materials/specs for the steering rack may be less good than the original one your Car came with.

What indications led you to believe it was a bad rack 1st & 2nd time ?
Just having the oil changed you will get oil all over the rack.

Burt. OP said the car was hard to make a u-turn and pump screaming.

This was clear liquid, definitely coming from where the steering shaft goes in.
