While @ MV9, I had a discussion with Steve Babcock about the limited availability of OEM bumper covers. He said they should be available for 10 (ten) yrs after the final vehicle was produced. He will look into it and get back to me.

FYI,, all the buzz about the Trilogy bumpers in other threads here is some info on those items from Steve as well. The reason for the high refurb cost on the molds may be because those bumpers are made of FIBERGLASS. I don't think those would be very practical for most of us. I did not realize what material they were made of. Pretty to look at, but not practical in the real world IMHO

I'm surprised noone has made a non-sucky MM bumper cover. Seems like the CV/GM folks are all over them building up Grandrauders.

How hard is it really to make a bumper cover? Is that waxy plastic really that difficult? Hell I'd consider a metal one with similar dimensions too. Be nice to not have a heart attack every-time a shopping cart gets loose or someone's following too close.

I may need a new cover. Lets see what the body shop says. Have a partial rip after some dude plowed into me at a stop sign couple of years ago. Would have been great if I had a metal bumper on there. Would have been unscathed. His import was trashed BTW, barely drivable.

The problem is the initial cost & work involved for a limited market.

If some one wants to do these they will get a hundred people saying "I want it". When it comes time to pay the piper you'd be lucky to sell 10.

The Trilogy bumper cover is quite different from our OEM cover.

I think that you're an optimist! $20,000.00 for the molds, cost of refurbishing, cost to get a part out of the mold and cost to trim, prep and prime. If 10 were sold I'll bet the cost would be over $3500.00 per set just to produce a primed part. I can recall some time ago a member asked if there was any interest in some decals being made and he got a good enough response to go ahead and have them done. Come time to pay up many backed out and he was left with many unsold. Don't mean to be Debbie Downer, just a realist.

Best of luck to Steve Babcock on getting the original factory molds pulled and some more parts made. The reality is the molds still exist and FORD can do some arm twisting with the original supplier to run off a few hundred sets. Good luck Steve!

I have worked for a Tier 1 supplier for Ford Motor Co. just past 27 years.

In my QC days - 8 - 14 years ago, a Tier 1 supplier was held to a 10 year + 1 year committment to produce 'service parts' after OEM expired.

With that said, we had to have the capability to produce these driveline components for 11 years after a part number change or engineering change as a replacement for warranty/service requirements.

I asked around today and from several sources, was told 10 - 15 years, the aforementions parts must be made available from us.

However,...

At any time Ford can tag certain parts 'obsolete' without prior notification, thus haullting the production of said part(s).

I do hope this is not the case with our bumpers.

Another item that is very hard to come by is our seat covers.

Back in the day, Lear made a lot of seats for Ford and today a company called Magna does the same.

Really hoping Steve can come thru with good news, or at least some leads on what the status is on the MM bumpers.

It's not inconceivable that the 'off-brand' items found on the I-net are Ford's former molds, and have not been refurbished due to lack of production numbers, that would explain the fitment and finish issues seen in the past.

*Cross fingers*

;)

I got the impression Steve knows where the bodies(figuratively) are buried and if he can get a run of bumper covers or anything else we need he will do his best to twist some proverbial arms.;)

Give 'em Hell Steve :bounce::bounce:
