The only "special" tools you'll need are a bearing puller, a bearing installer, and a slide hammer. Most of the major chains like AutoZone have a loan-a-tool program and will have these.

What he said ^^^^

If the bearing in pressed on, which I think it is, you'll need someone to press the bearing off the axle. If the new axle doesn't have the ABS ring on it, it will need to be pressed off the old on on the new.

I heated the ABS rings til they fell off the old axles then I placed them on the new axles and let them air cool. They seated perfect and saved a headache of trying to press the new ones on.

I just paid the dealer a whole buncha money to do this. Mostly labor cost. Parts weren't much.

Get a new lock pin bolt for the carrier!! I re-used mine and you really should not (car is traded in so no worries anymore!!)

You can get the axles with the ABS ring watch out that they are the same type. I got a machined ring in my Dorman Axle and the original was stamped on my old 2001. Soon after I would get random ABS activation just before I stopped. Thought my HCU was dying but upon reflection the problems started just after the axle repair.

The Ford Repair Manual doesn't say anything about replacing the lock pin bolt. I'd replace it if it looked damaged, but there is little or no stress on that part so I wouldn't replace it unless damaged.

Just an FYI... others have had fitment issues with the Dorman axles.

The ABS ring should be silver in color and has lots of teeth on it.

Looks something like this.

I got Phoebe's axles from Rock Auto and they were Dormans. Both came with the ABS ring already installed and I had no issues with them at all.

They also came with new bearings and seals so I didn't have to buy anything else but the fluid (Valvoline 75W-140 synthetic).
