So some of you know I have been searching for a VW diesel truck for some time. Here it is. 133,000 miles, been repainted, interior redone, has 1991 turbo diesel engine mated to a 5 speed. Fun to drive, cool truck!

That's the 1998-02 TDI engine from the jetta/golf. It's the model before they went to the PD - pump dusse - which had a slightly more problematic fuel pump. The ALH in the US was rated for 90hp, in europe, for 110, only difference being in electronics. With a chip and nozzles, 130ish hp and 250 torque is very doable, while usually improving fuel economy at the same time.

Sweet! We also have a 2001 Jetta TDI with that engine. Sounds like you know a lot about these VW's, how are the ones from the early 90s as I have in this one?

The last time I saw a Diesel VW in that style, The motor got away and died behind my car in the parking lot back in 1992.

When does the 6.7 Cummins go in? :D

Fixed. ;)

It would just need a little hood scoop.

I don't know that much about them; I just did my research when I bought my 01 jetta and it seemed the pre PD pump ones, with a manual, were the ones to get.

I never modified mine, but I did get to ride in a chipped and nozzle'd golf, I think it was a 2000, and it had put down something like 127hp and almost 260 tq. It was waaay more fun to drive than my jetta, which often felt underpowered as you probably know from yours.

Only thing I know about the earlier ones is the automatic tranny is very weak, while the manual is bullet proof - weakest link being the clutch, and because they've been around before ultra low sulphur diesel, the intake can get clogged with soot, especially around the egr valve. There's a redneck way of cleaning the intake manifold that involves a propane torch and a blow gun/compressed air, basically burning all of the soot inside. Some of them get pretty gruesome as they get higher up in mileage.

If you want the easy way out, new intake manifolds are only about 100 bucks and change on ebay. I had lotsa plans for mine - egr delete, new intake, chip and nozzles, but I needed a bigger car and my work commute got cut in half, so the jetta was sold and the Marauder came :cool4:

Yeah, the egr delete was the first thing I did to the Jetta when we got it. I also did a race pipe on it. This will greatly reduce the carbon build up. As far as the truck, I didn't see an egr...which is good. I did notice a lot of slop in the shift linkage, so a rebuild on that is in order.
