View Full Version : Asteroid #YU55
Our old friend is back to pay us a short visit, and then return in 2028.
It's as big as an aircraft carrier, traveling at a very high rate of speed, and will pass between the earth and the moon, (this time).
If it hits the earth on some future cycle it might just cause a serious extinction event for a major part of the planet.
But what if it hit our moon? It would probably shatter it into pieces, some small, big, and bigger. The tides could disappear, and very large pieces of the moon would fall to earth. The damage would be on an unprecedented scale over a long period of time as their orbits decayed. Some pieces would form into a ring around the earth (cool).
Ah phooey, something else to worry about now. I'll be about 90.

Just heard this on the morning news, pretty scary to know the damage it could cause if it collided, so hopefully it runs it's course and stays away!

well 2012 is coming up.
Maybe it will just sneak in undetected and live in public housing on my tax dollars.

Space rock YU55 will hurtle past our planet at a distance of just 201,700 miles on November 8, 2011.

in comparison a aircraft carrier is a a grain of sand on the beach(OK maybe two) to our moon, much less so to Earth......

If it hit the U.S., it couldn't do any more damage than the Obama administration has done to it.

Might be an improvement!!!!

It's not the size, it's the speed :D
It's travelling at 17 kilometers per second, that means 38,027 miles an hour. (I think I did the math correctly) Space shuttles are doing 17,500 mph when they re-enter the atmosphere. So, if this thing did hit, we might actually be able to see it before it hit.

What is with the moon getting all of the good meteors for the last few thousand years? GREEDY!!
OCCUPY YU55
if it was to hit Earth, it would exert a force the equivalent of 65,000 atomic bombs and leave a crater six miles wide and 2,000ft deep.Bah, AZ would just be pissed because the Earth would now have a larger Grand Canyon, tourism there would tank...
At the speed it's traveling, I'd think it'd at least partially burn up in the atmosphere, after all it doesn't have any heat shields like does the shuttle...

Well that is one way to look at it. I doubt however that it will come with out a bang! Any bets on where it hits?I vote for DC:)

I vote for DC and every building where so called public officials work.
So hopefully it hits during the hours of 8-430.

just 200k miles? that's a lot closer to the moon than the earth, moon being around 240k miles if I remember right...
If it hit the U.S., it couldn't do any more damage than the Obama administration has done to it.

it's a combination of the size, angle and speed that it hits with... An aircraft going 250mph may take down a commercial building or half of a residential neighborhood, but one made of solid iron going 25,000 mph would probably take out a city... There's a theory out there on how a 7 mile wide asteroid created the gulf of mexico and wiped out dinosaurs... 7 miles is not much more than a grain of sand on the beach... maybe a small sand castle :o

That what I said! nyuk, nyuk, nyuk...
7 miles wide, that ain't no joke. Even a 7 mile wide piece of tissue paper would do some damage. A rock that big, i could understand it killing everything. Probably throw enough dust and debris in the air to block out the sun and drop the temps enough to kill lots of critters. Scary stuff when you think about it.

One thing to remember, if it does happen, whether it falls in the middle of the Kalahari desert, or in the middle of DC, it will still be George Bush's fault.

You'd rather that hit land than water. Yes, it would cause a mass extinction. We need the moon too. Amazing how fragile it all is... Guess I better max my ccs and get more powa parts. :D

I vote that Casey take his invention up on that thing and ride it like a soap box derby car and steer it right around Earth! Yaaaayyyyyy for Casey! Yaaaayyyy for beer!
Well i guess it could have done some real damage after all:
"If an asteroid that size would hit the planet, Purdue University professor Jay Melosh calculated the consequences. The impact would carve a crater four miles across and 1,700 feet deep. And if it slammed into the ocean, it would trigger 70-foot-high tsunami waves."
