Been looking into parts for the Eaton Swap and was wondering about the intercooler...

Hows the quality of the OEM Cobra unit compaired to an aftermarket?

Been reading how the intercooler has most of the influence of the IAT's as comapired to the heat exchanger mounted up front.

I'm officially shopping for parts now for the swap.

Any insight/advise is much appreciated!

Look to www.frozenboost.com (http://www.frozenboost.com) many have just upgraded the external water to air intercooler. Type 100.

I saw this and it got me thinking.

Wondering how big the impact would be to IAT along with the Frozenboost type 100 vs. the stock intercooler with the type 100.

Does anyone use an intercooler other then the Cobra OEM?

The intercooler is the unit mounted inside the lower intake manifold that attaches to the bottom of the blower. Air flows through it and then into the engine. It has a series of water cooled fins that the air flows across, and the water extracts heat from the air. (Basically a reverse radiator as it's function is to cool the air, not the fluid.)

The coolant is then pumped from the intercooler through the outlet in a small manifold to the heat exchanger that is typcially mounted at the front of the car; this is a true radiator, as it's function is to cool the intercooler coolant. The coolant will then route back through a reservoir and back into the intercooler through an inlet on the intercooler mainfold.

The OEM intercooler does a good job, and is designed specifically for the dimensions of the 4.6L lower intake manifold. AFAIK, there aren't any aftermarket offerings, and if there are, I highly doubt you'd be able to get one for the price of a used Cobra unit.

On the other hand, there are a number of options available for the heat exchanger. You can use the OEM Cobra unit, but several of us are using the Froozenboost type 100. It's larger and therefore will dump heat more effectively than the Cobra unit. It the ambeint air temp is less than 90*, I'm typcially seeing IATs of 105* or less. Once ambient gets over 100, it's real hard to keep IAT below maybe 130* without something like a killer chiller.

A Type 100 will cost you around $150 bucks, and IMO, wll worth it.

That price is high! I paid 230 shipped for my intercooler and it's next to new!

Interesting! I stand corrected, as this obviously is an aftermarket IC for the Cobra Eaton set up.

Used Cobra intercoolers are typcially priced around $300.

Looks pretty nice and I would hope for $600 dollars it would make a big difference. I dont think i could justify the coinage for that. But I'll stick with the OEM unit I have.

That's a nice find, they turned the IC core into a dual pass as well. If you look at the pic you'll see the horizontal seam in between the inlet and outlet ports, forcing the coolant through to the end and back. $600 isn't too bad of a price, it's not absoulutly necessary, but it's probably a good mod for those with overspun ported eatons.

Haven't been able to find any newly produced replacement stock Cobra Intercoolers around.

Is used our only hope for an OEM spec. unit?

The one you want to pay most attention to is the heat exchanger.
