I've transported acetylene bottles in the trunks of my cars before. It's risky and I thought about this very type of thing happening every time. That dude's lucky to be alive.

As a guy who responds to hazmat spills ... AIYAA!

Lucky to be alive is an understatement. The proper response would be open garage, open all car doors, walk away. Let it air out in the garage and naturally into the environment.

I'm surprised not starting the vehicle up didn't blow it but I can see why the window switch would do it since when the little rocker arm comes into contact with another part it gives off a slight arch.

Very lucky!

That's the best looking Toyota 'FJ' I've ever seen!

I rank them up there.....errrrr......:hmmm:.. ....down there with Honda Excrements as the ugliest trucks on the market. (Since the Avalanche of plastic parts has been redesigned, I removed it from that list.)

As others have noted....that guy is VERY lucky to be alive, and is also a MAJOR retard.
Reminds me of an old guy I once saw siphoning gas with a cigarette in his mouth....true story!

BTW: You know what 'FJ' stands for???

WTF would you want harm to come to this guy.

Everyone does stupid **** sometime .... like the guy who did the cribbing job on this drill rig. What the hell was he thinking???

My drill rig drilling a well on the side of a dam that is failing.

Actually I did make sure it was safe and would not tumble down hill before I towered up. And those hallow stem augers that the rig is sitting are not going anywhere as they are set up in such a way they would not roll or move. And way stronger than wood. Also the left rear out rigger was on a level surface too. Was I nervous? Yep. Would I have done it if I had any doubt it would fail? No way. There was no other way to drill the boring. No one is going to pay for a bench to be made on the side of the dam. So I made a level surface out of the hallow stem augers.

Would I put very explosive tanks in my car or SUV? Hell no. I've always put those tanks in the back of my pick up.
If you can't put a tank in an area of a vehicle that's separate from the passenger area. Then you simply don't put it in.

Check OSHA's regulations on transporting gas cylinders. Were the safety caps on? He deserved more than he got.

Since the original link went down here is the story and pics.

Found another website with the story and pics.

i had an acetylene bottle in my truck, the valve was bumped so slightly and over night the truck filled with the gas. i noticed the smell, and opened the doors to air out the truck. i drove the truck out of the garage to get some more air movement. i went to roll the pass side window down and as soon as i touched the power windows. BAM. with me in the truck. i lost all hearing out of my right ear and got a scratch on the back of my head. all things considering, im alive.

so now ive got the question out to toyota about a 2012 TT. 125 to canada only, 15 in standard. i want a standard...

pictures tell 1000 words.

dont take any minutes or seconds you have for granted... it may be your last...

peace everyone,"

So he deserves to die because of this guys? Seriously, some of you need some perspective!

I actually own an FJ Cruiser as well, very sturdy vehicles. I really love mine.

Not because he owns a Toyota - because he's dumb enough to store combustable gas cylinders in his vehicle and then turn on the juice when he detects the leak!

I know it wasn't because he owned a Toyota.

It was a bonehead move yeah but we've all made bonehead moves before. I don't think people should be put to death for having a fuzzy brain moment.

I call :bs:

There's no way he was inside the vehicle yet sustained so little injury with the explosive force that did that kind of structural damage.

And how come nothing is burnt or even singed?

gdsqdcr

I think it is possible. Look at the damage in the rear of the vehicle, body is blown off. Now look at the drivers door, almost no interior damage on the panel. My thought, he had the door open when he attempted to roll down the window, so when the boom came, the door was not there to stop him -- he was blown out of the car.

Seen and heard similiar stories ...

Look at the front seat, it's mostly intact. I can tell you being that I own one that the front seats are large and cover your entire torso.

He's lucky he didn't kill any inocent bystanders!

I feel for the guy, how many people have transported a tank for their grill in their car - not everyone has an "extra" pickup truck sitting around. I for one am thinking "holy cow I'm glad i saw this, will never do that."

How many people don't realize the danger of filling a plastic gas can in the middle of winter up while its on the carpet of their car - that is a static problem waiting to happen.

On another forum they said that acetylene gas explodes quickly with a high velocity but not a lot of pressure thus the damage to the car and not the person. Don't know if that's correct or not.

Krytin

Transporting is NOT the same as storing overnight!!

And the panels blew off the car because the gas had permeated into the spaces between the inner/outer panels.
