Ok, my air compressor died. I have decided to convert to rear coil springs. Rather than use an aftermarket conversion kit, I would like to use the Moog CC865 Police/Taxi springs. I plan to leave the stock shocks in place for now. Cutting the DG/LG wire at Pin 11 in C2131 at the Air Suspension Module disables the indicator light. I am having trouble determining which isolators (insulators) to use. I would like to use polyurethane isolators from Energy Suspension rather than rubber. Any recommendations or part numbers? What are others (who have converted to Moog CC865 rear coils) using? It would be nice to have the dimensions of the Moog CC865 without first ordering them. Are there technical drawings of Moog coil springs available? Maybe paper catalogs at a parts store?

For the specs check out Napaonline as they usually have the specs on the individual part's page.

I can tell you that the ENS isolators will raise the car slightly(~1/4") over the thinner rubber insulators. Don't forget to grease them also because they will squeak if you don't.

Im using cvpi rear coils in my car. I ordered them from Suncore Industries. I would say talk to them since them specialize in suspension conversions for all different types of cars that come with stock air suspension. The ride is a bit firmer but I will never have to worry about air leaks/dry rot/bad compressors ever again.

NAPA online lists no Moog part numbers. O'Reilly and Advance are Moog dealers, but their sites are not helpful. On the Advance Auto site, in the customer Q&A section about these particular springs, the question of whether the springs come with isolators was asked---one reply said they did and the other said they did not. I am inclined to believe they do not come with isolators. Anyhow, I figure I will just order the springs and measure them when they arrive.

I am looking into this as well for my 92' Marquis.

The Moog CC865 specs are as follows

Coil Spring Dimensions
Inside Diameter is 4.5"
Bar Diameter is .593
Install Height is 11.5
Free Height is 15.25

Now, not owning a Marauder... I know the Marquis and Crown Vic springs are the same. The factory isolator is 2.130 inner diameter, and 3.880 outer diameter, that is a Moog K6203-2

The recommended Energy Suspension isolators from searching is supposed to be a 9.6101. The specs are 3.75 Inner, 5 7/16 outer, and 7/8's thick.

Now I am confused as to why the factory isolator and the Energy seem to be completely different in size

Summit Racing lists the Moog K6203-2 for 1992-2002 Crown Victorias. Is this the wrong part to use for 2003+? If it is the wrong part, what is the correct Moog part number?

Does anyone have an OEM Ford part number for 2003+ upper/lower coil spring isolators such as those used on the CVPI? My dealer insists they cannot look up anything without having a VIN to enter into their computer...

From what I can find the 2003 factory part number is D9AZ-5536-A

Ok, so I have ordered my Moog rear coils from Rock Auto...

I know I need the isolators on the top of the spring, but should I also install them on the bottom of the spring as well?

Thanks to everyone for the assistance...I really want to get this right the first time.

The conversion is complete. The Moog CC865 coil springs (CC is for Cargo Coil) came with four isolators (K6203-2), and these are a polyurethane material. They did NOT fit the perches on the axle and I had to remove some material with a knife to make them fit in the spring seats in the frame. I ended up ordering Ford D9AZ-5536-A isolators for the spring perches on the axle. The Ford isolators are a much softer rubber material and they fit like a glove because they were so pricey.

The car sits higher in the rear, maybe by 3/4" or 1". It feels higher in the rear when sitting in the car. No significant change in ride quality or handling. Overall, I am pleased with the change. I am thrilled that I will never have to deal with air suspension issues again. Air suspension problems were only supposed to be for Lincoln owners anyhow.

Thanks for the assistance with this project.

Glad you got it worked out. I just finished my 1.5" drop with Energy Suspension isolators. I'm with you on the air ride... glad it's over

Hi,
I'm a non-mechanic owner of a 2003 Marauder, and would like to ask some
questions here on the site before I go to the Ford dealer that services the car -- two days ago, on the coldest morning so far this winter, I noticed
that the rear end of the vehicle wasn't "up" like usual, and the car felt
like it had no springs or shocks left at all, barely driveable -- from your discussion it seems that problems with the air suspension are happening to a lot of other owners - how does repairing/replacing the existing system compare with the cost of changing over to these police/taxi shocks?
the dealer I go to services the RCMP vehicles, but I'm the only Marauder they've ever seen:) or would it be better to take this problem to a garage that specializes in suspension & brakes? any advice you can offer
me would be greatly appreciated--
foxy

Are you talking about swapping from air ride?

yeah, my compressor is toast and was debating about swapping to springs. i'm actually still trying to decide what to do. i know some guys have switched and others are really against changing the stock setup.

Its a pretty straight forward swap. I just did the rear of my 92' Marquis.

You need to undo the lower shock mount. The bag sits on the lower spring mount (nothing to unbolt on the bottom of the bag)
http://i167.photobucket.com/albums/u131/Free89BroncoII/100_2604.jpg

The top of the bag has a hose connection. There is a small metal clip that will release the connection itself. On the top of the bag there is a clip that holds the bag in place.

All thats left is the top shock mount. Alot of people have problems here... mine was pretty easy. It's just a matter of reaching the top stud.

Thats really all thats involved. Install new coils and shocks (if needed). If you don't need them then there is no reason to unbolt the top of the shock.

thanks for posting that. still on the fence. looks easy enough at least.

It is easy... you are going to get mixed answers about this. Alot of people say fix it... then again alot of people will just tell you it will go bad again.

Mine was toast.... I could have replaced the bags and compressor. Instead I wanted to go with Eaton springs and drop her down a bit

Hi, guys,
just wanted to let you know I took the info from this discussion to my
mechanic - he got the 2003 MOOGs plus the Ford insulator, and the
ride is lovely, and the car has its "lift" back -- all this cost under $300
out the door, and the air compressor replaced would have cost a lot
more than that -- so thanks, your knowledge is priceless to owners

Would anyone have the Ford part number for the Crown Vic or Grand Marquis springs , are they the same as the police interceptor springs, I'll think I may go with this conversion but want to use OEM parts? Thanks
