View Full Version : Chrome covers on my wheel lug nuts
I just discovered I lost one of my Chrome Covers for a lug nut. I also just had my tires rotated so I checked all of them and discover another loose one, which I did glued back on. Question for you smart guys is what should I use when I find a loose one, glue? If so what kind? Also anyone know where I can find a replacement? If you're asking yourself how many miles my wheels have on them it's less than 63,000.
Am wondering if the automatic car wash that I've used since 2002 is working these caps loose? The NEW owner installed a high pressure wash for cleaning the wheels and tires.
Thanks

I threw one of the chrome acorn caps last spring around May 2011. Got a replacement lugnut from the FORD Parts Counter at my local dealer. They had them in stock, no problem. One lugnut was about $10.00. Now I gotta go find the part number.
I just had to replace one of the acorn caps on my driver's rear in May. Took 8 years and 4 sets of tires to shake loose. They may be crappy after 8 years of use .... but they certainly ain't cheap.
Part number for the replacement lugnut with SS cap is 9R3Z-1012-A. I recall one lugnut was about $10.00 at the Ford Parts counter -- in stock. AutoZone had similar for cheaper; but not an exact match for the OEM cap.
One of these days, I'll do the Gorilla nuts ..... not today though. ;)

Search for Gorilla Nuts.
I'd go with Gorilla Locks.
Gorilla Locks
Gorilla Guard Locks (4 locks, free spinning sleeve on the outside of the lock) -
61681 - Chrome
Gorilla Locks (4 locks) - 71681N - Chrome, 71681NBC - Black Chrome
Gorilla Lock System (20 locks) - 71683N - Chrome, 71683NBC - Black Chrome
I'd use Gorilla Glue on the covers.

I got my whole set of gorilla locks for around $40 if I remember right, and that was replacements for all lugnuts all around. I am actually using a mix of gorilla and mcguard on my wheels so all my lugnuts are locking, and 2 different types of locking. Makes it a little more of a pain come wheel change time, but it gives me a little more security IMO.

Between drag racing and tire rotation my lugs see alot of duty. Eventually the cover works it's way off. This can make it difficult to remove the cover less lug.
I replaced all mine with McGard. They are heavier, but they are one piece.
So far the McGards are holding up well. They have a lifetime warranty.
IF you don't want to spring for a complete new set individual aftermarket ones in the original stainless covered style are available in the Dorman brand at a good parts store for about $2.50.
Search for Gorilla Nuts.
I have no intention of finding a Gorilla and grabbing his nuts!

I re-glued them with Dow Corning 3145 RTV Adhesive. Both pieces should be clean. It's grey silcone rubber and they seem to survive impact guns so far..

I thought I was paranoid! Now after reading your post capt512, I'm thinking that I'm not paranoid enough! :o
I don't think I will personally go as far as replacing the remaining 4 "non-secure" lug nuts, but 3 standard lugs w/ two different security lugs per rim sounds like a smart move... any opinions would be appreciated! :help:

Gorilla nuts are the way to go.
Been on my MM for years, and still look great.
Summit carries them,.. ~$50.00 shipped last time I looked.
20 lug nuts that all require the supplied tool to remove/install.
You simply cannot go wrong, and considering the replacement cost of these rims...
Small price to pay for the added security.

I seem to remember RF Overlord found out the OEM style were different than McGards or Gorilla and he got something else that fully seated the nut to the wheel. If your reading Bob post up what you got.:)

Interesting.
Me, as well as many other members are running the same Gorilla lug nuts and no issue(s) reported.
Been on my MM for 6+ years with many, many WOT's along with straightening out many 'twisties' and could not be happier.

Mike.He mentioned something about the conical shape of the Mcgard's and Gorilla's not matching the OEM wheel and he found something that fully seated.
I suppose if your wheels haven't fallen off yet you are good to go:)
