View Full Version : Shell Station- Bad Gas, a cautionary tale

PonyUP

I wanted to share my recent experience. I know many of us our gas snobs and use only certain stations. For me one of those stations is Shell. Last Monday I filled up at a Shell Station in Braselton Ga.
Immediately after full up, I noticed a hesitation in acceleration from a dead stop.
I didn't drive the car after returning home and the next morning at start up there was a tremendous amount of smoke, the car choked out 3 times and wreaked of burnt gas. The Check Engine Light came on and was throwing random misfire codes.
Got the car out to Marty's on Saturday to be looked at, and Jeff, one of his mechanics, pulled a sample of the gas.
The gas was green and was lacking a huge amount of the gas smell, it was nowhere near the overpowering smell that gas is.
Drained the gas tank, refilled from a different station and the car is back to running too notch.
But I am crossing Shell off my preferred Gas station listing, and I thought this tale may help some of you. That was one expensive tank of Gas

Big thanks to Jeff and Marty for getting me hooked up and back to doing a little romping

Well that blows. I used Shell and BP. Occasionally Mobile. I've never had a problem. But never say never.

I'm glad you got it resolved quickly and by someone we all can trust with our MM's!!

Never buy gas at a station when you see gas truck dumping. A dump may have been done minutes/hours before you came in, but there is nothing that can be done about that. Told to me from a former gasoline company friend/exec.

Interesting.

Shell is a Tier One gasoline supplier, should only be providing top quaity fuels. You may wish to follow up with them, not certain you'll get reimbursement, but they'll definitely want to know about it.

All gasoline distributors sell to all stations. Only difference is additive added after dump. This is why gasoline trucks doing dumping no longer have brand names on them anymore.

Glad they were able to find the problem and hook you up. Marking Shell off now! :burnout::burnout:

Ya know Bobby, RaceLegend79 (I haven't seen him on the board in a while) had a problem when he picked up his new-to-him blue. Stopped on the way home and filled up at WalMart. The car made it another mile or so before stopping. He'd just gotten a tankful of diesel! The truck driver had just dumped a load of diesel into the super tank. WalMart ended up doing quite a bit of work to his car.

Definitely do that, and make sure you reference their Tier One status, they oughta make it right.

Shell has the highest content of detergent in their 93 octane gas compare to BP which is second followed by Mobil-1. PLEASE get on the horn and report this.

Stuff happens even at the best of suppliers. If it happened to you, I suspect that there are many other customers who got a similar bad batch of gas.

Report it to the local station and to the Shell Corp. There may be 50 others out there who have/are experiencing the same problems from the same station.

Shell will/should make it right for you and the others. Show them your bill for the checkout, draining the tank, and replacing the bad fuel.

I wouldn't color all of a particular brand as questionable based on a single isolated incident.

Glad you were able to get this correct without any lingering issues.

Pony Up you are a victum of what sounds like contaminated gas. The transpertation company may have "cross dropped" put the wrong product in the wrong tank. Contact the station tell them what happend they or the transpertation company should reanburce you for your repairs. Hope to make it to braekfast this month to your 1 of 1 diesel powered DBP MM.

Lol, I'll be at breakfast this month, but thanks to Jeff and Marty, no longer diesel powered. I've tried many times to contact the station, but no answer. I unfortunately don't have the time to drive up there this week.
It would be great to get my money back, but I'm just happy to have Blue on the road again

$2.25/gal?!?!?

You're killing me - I'm getting Ultra at $3.43 and thinking that I'm doing OK.

I''ve got to tell you (all) it seems like gas is going up again. I was tracking Ultra going down for at least the last month. But (winter mix?), we're headed back up again.

I thought that, in NJ, we had the cheapest gas prices - You're killing us in VA!!!!

That's why there are filters on the pumps. Depending on the size of the tank, it can take 4-6 hours for the tank to settle after a delivery.

Sounds like my adventure 2 months ago after leaving the track. That station was a sunoco. I pull timing and ran octane boost. Then when it still wasnt up to par I added 5 gallons of 100 octane. I recently filled up and all is well.

+1 on the contamination. sounds like someone dropped diesel in the premium tank dramatically lowering the octane rating and can change the color of the gas depending on how low they were in the premium volume. those kinda things don't go unnoticed by the carrier. the stores volumes won't be right and they probably had it fixed within a day or so after.

Well it took about six weeks, but I got a call yesterday from Golden Pantry that owns the Shell station where I got the bad gas.
They have been able to confirm the driver put the wrong mix in when filling the tanks, this effected 4 other people that they know of.
The Station is refunding my money for the gas and the insurance company will be contacting me about the work on the car and settling that claim.
So it sounds like they are going to step up and make things right
