Any tips on prep?

I want to paint the blower (except for the last couple inches near the pulley where it looks like bare metal) and the curved intake part that has the trilogy motorsports logo/words.... paint them black to match the valve covers.

Insert help here.

what kind of prep do you recommend?

Get some good degreaser and make sure you clean it thoroughly.

Make sure you scuff the surface so the primer has something to adhere to. Scotchbrites work fine and it just needs to be dull to look at. Then clean it again make sure it is dry.

Are you going with BC/CC or single stage? If you paint with car body paint, the trick to making it look good is to heat cycle it slowly. Bring it up to to 100*, then 150* and then normal operating temp with a complete cool-down between. If you go for the full 200* right away, the paint tends to discolor.

Now, if you're going to use hi-temp paint or powder coat, then have at it.

I don't want to sound like an A--hole hear, but like I said I've been painting for a while now. No primer is needed, you only prime something when your trying to fill or smooth out the surface, and it gives you something to work with. When simply painting over an already finished surface, ( new car, raw aluminum or metal ) a SEALER is all you need. Sealers have less build or viscosity, and only require a light to medium coat. The prep should be to first clean with a solvent based cleaner, then take a GRAY 3M Scotch Brite pad and lightly but completely scuff the entire area to be painted, then re-wipe with the cleaning solvent. Check with your local paint store to find what SEALERS they have for bare aluminum, (epoxy, acid etch) apply, let FLASH, then paint. I would only use Base Coat Clear Coat paint, enough base just to cover, then 2 coats of clear. I have painted many motors, and there is no need to do anything special to CURE the paint, or heat cycle it. Just let it dry 24 hours and your ready.

Still excellent advice. To me, a sealer and primer are interchangeable and I might not have used the right wording. BTW, which brand of paint do you use?

That's why I tryed to make that distinction, to avoid any confusion, I use Auto Color, but any name brand is good.

It looks like Powder Coat, but can also be done with automotive paint, (matt finish clear).
