In my Avatar, the one in the military outfit (graduation day from Basic, December,2011) is my oldests son. He called me while doing his EMT (medic) training in Fort Sam Houston to tell me he got Hawaii for his first post. He is excited to say the least.

I am to understand that Hawaii is the highest requested location with the least amount of openings....

Downside, they said that he may only get 6 months there before poss. overseas.

Am proud of him......

Just wanted to brag.

Roger

Congrats to a proud Dad and his son. :2thumbs:

I had Hawaii on my request "Dream Sheet" as a 1st Choice for 20 years and never even got close to Hawaii. Went to Germany twice. Kinda pricey to live in HI I hear.

Only 2 brigades of the Army in Hawaii plus USARPAC Headquarters. Probably under 10,000 total troops.... maybe 15,000 tops. That's less than 3%. Better chance to go to Fort Hood, TX; Fort Benning, GA; Fort Riley, KS, Fort Bragg, NC; Fort Drum, NY or Afghanistan.

Commissioned my oldest son in 1999 after his graduation from VMI. He's been in for 12 years now as an Army Engineer.

LOL, sorry about that! I shall clarify... New home possibly Schofield Barracks in Wahiawa on the Island of Oahu-HI and possibly attached to an Infantry Unit which their MOS (Military Occupational Specialty) is called 11B (Bravo) aka 11-bang-bang aka Queen of Battle and Medics are 91B (Bravo), but I believe it was changed to 91W (Whiskey). Hawaii is home to the 25th Infantry Division aka Tropic Lightning, I believe a thunder bolt insignia is their patch on their shoulder. Anyways... They usually like to send/attach medics to Infantry (Queen of Battle) and Artillery (King of Battle) Units. They need your son to earn his money out there!

Tropic Lightning .... aka "The Electric Pineapple".

Do you know why artillery is the "King" and infantry is the "Queen"?

Sometimes military (US Army) folks forget that their language is quite different. I remember sitting at the dining room table with a friend years ago. We were talking for about 10 minutes straight and my Dad was smiling and nodding his head. After my friend left, Dad asked me ... "What the H3LL language were you speaking?". From his perspective, we might have been talking in Greek or Chinese with all the acronyms, unique military terms, and specific job related jargon. Never really thought about it that way until then.

I was stationed at MCBH Kaneohe Bay for 3 years. He'll either love it there in Hawaii or he'll hate it. Either way I wish him luck and thank him for his service!

Congratulations to you and your soon. Army Medic...Truly one of the greatest MOS out there...ask me how I know. Once he gets boots on ground for awhile have him look into W1, or Flight Medic training to enhance his medical training.

I was your dad at my sons basic training graduation. My ex-wifes current husband is also military. They was having quite the conversation (didn't understand one word of it). I saw this was a good bonding moment for them two and girlfriend and I bowed out and let them enjoy the moment. My ex asked later if I was pi$$ed about that, I said, no, he needs that "Connection" just like I do.
It also helps that I like this guy and he is very respectful.

anyhow, long story now short, I understand how your father fells / felt.....

But thanks for the explanation....

I have been told that if he isn't doing "surgery related" stuff that he will spend a ton of time in tents and all.... All my boys enjoy camping, was all boyscouts, all went to Philmont (me to, twice)

He is pumped about it.... So am I for him.

thanks again
