im thinking about picking up a CV for a new DD. driving my bronco 60 miles round trip to work at 13mpg is getting expensive. i have a few questions for you guys that DD vics, i know quite a bit about MMs but when it comes to the other panthers im not really up to speed. i know that mileage really isnt much of an issue as log as its been maintained properly.
my first question is obviously what kind of gas mileage to expect from them? i have herd mid 20s are doable if you drive like a normal person. final gear ratio is obviously the deciding factor here, any easy way to tell what ratio they came with?
another question is, when did they go to drive by wire? im not sure i would like that, any opinions on this?
any input would be great, im looking for one for less then $5k. seems that kinda money can get you a pretty nice ride.
thanks, Dave

I can tell you that I get 23 to 25 MPG (mostly highway) on mine, nothing crazy, speed limit.
I have a couple of 03's for sale if you are interested! Shipping shouldn't be to bad to Chicago. Nice rust free southern cars.

Not sure when they wen't to drive by wire, sorry I can't help you with that question.

Just got a quote and shipping would cost about $584 to Chicago from my town! Cheaper than I thought.
PM me if you are interested, I can make you a good deal as a fellow MM member.

The drive by wire throttles started in 2005. As to gas mileage, you can expect anywhere from high teens to mid twenties depending on how you drive and the gear ratio.

My 93 gets 20city, and 25-28 highway. I also have 2.73s in the back.

ImpalaSlayer - im thinking about picking up a CV for a new DD. .....
Would recommend a low mileage 2004 "police" with the following stipulation - SAP (Street Appearance Package) P71 LEO admin', FD admin', or FBI. Reasons: dash and its trim isn't full of holes where chit was mounted.
no spot light, antenna-farm, nor roof holes.
has the look of a "civilian" car rather than an ex-police.
the wiring ( more than likely ) is not all whacked-up. Which "cop" cars are to add "accessories" and equipment.
the exterior trim of a "civilian" ( note that the side trim is "civilian" and includes the front fender piece ).
more than likely it will have tinted windows.
since it's a P71, it is the 250HP version of the 4.6 ( highest available ).
it will ride a bit stiff and sit a tad higher than the "civilian" due to the spring rates. *The rear will be springs and not the air suspension.
the dual exhaust is stainless steel and the tailpipes will not have resonators.
100,000 miles is nothing to this platform.2 years ago I made the same recommendation to the brother of a NC friend of mine who lives in Colorado. He found a FBI unit in Saint Louis MO with 87,000 miles. Puts-on a LOT of miles and is VERY happy with the MPG - 28 (even with 3.55 RAR).

So............. Here is your thread where you explain how you are under a form of financial hardship due to the milage you get with you present vehicle and the cost of fuel..........
How would you like it if someone where to come on this thread and call you a cheapskate, or deface your thread in some other way Dave.......
I know you wouldn't care for it..... Now put yourself in the spot of a person posting his car up for sale on this board, and getting bashed or critisized for pricing his car at number that keyboard commando's such as yourself, don't agree with.......
Just saying....... You by posting this thread have an expectation of some, maybe a hint of compassion and respect for the challenges you are facing with a $500 monthly fuel bill....... Try and offer the same compassion either through silence or an encouraging post, to folks who post up a vehicle for sale at a price you may not understand/agree with.....
Its really that simple "in the real world".
Sorry if this post craps on your parade, but just wanted to make the point that it sucks when the roles are reversed...... Have a nice night Dave:D

For the early cars dave be on the look out for water leaks from the firewall grommits and dried seam sealer in the trunk area. Rusted braklines, abs issues, intake issues. Also the early cars pre 98 I would say of the top of my head had issues with the drain for the ac rotting out the frame where it drips. I would buy the newest pather you can get 2003-2004 is propbaly the sweet spot as far as styling and chassis upgrades. Having said this my daily driver is a 1996 grand marquis with 184,000 miles best $650 dollars I ever spent, gas mileage isnt bad even with my driving style, it can do a one legged burnout all day long and I even have one working window;).

My brother is selling his 05 vic lx. It has 118000 miles on it and needs some work. Will need front brakes, rear parking brakes, the roof paint is peeling (silver birch), and the drivers seat is worn. He is asking 4500 for it. It is the civilian car with single exhaust and the 2.73 rear. Average mpg is 19-20. He is in MD so no shipping would be involved. He just signed up here since he bought an 06 CVPI recently. If you're interested, pm me...if not no biggie.

I've had 3 CV before my Marauder
2000 CVLX, 2.73 open RAR and got up to 26mpg hwy
2001 CVPI, 3.27 RAR trak lok and never got over 22 mpg for me
2003 CV SPORT, 3.27 open RAR and got 22-23.5 hwy for me
I wouldn't hesitate in buying another CV one day as a DD..i should have just kept my SPORT when I got the Marauder..Now I drive a box caprice for winter, back and forth to work type stuff..I;ve alwasy liked the box caprices, but I know you are a Blue Oval fan..Which is fine by me cause I am as well.
As most pointed out, the 2004 year are one of the best choices. The civilian models, LX etc. with the 2.73 RAR can get even up to 28 or so mpg on hwy..The 26mpg I got was in summer with a/c going 75mph on turnpike.

compared to my supercharged marauder, if you drive it under normal conditions, do not expect much of a MPG gain. I am getting the same mileage mixed driving with my marauder as i did with my 2003 crown vic and my 2005 grand marquis.
2005 is the first year they went DBW, there isnt much difference but does feel smoother i guess you can say.
stay away from 2003, bad year all around with a ton of issues
2004 models will get you possibly best quality with the fewest issues
2005 DBW and redesigned steering wheel
2006+ new changes to the wheels 16" steelies and rear suspension reworked
i would recommend looking at 04+. 04 civilian versions didn't come with a 80mm MAF, only CVPI and i believe sport models did.
05+ all models carried the 80mm MAF
used police cars, you will hear a lot of crap, every single one of them was an admin car. If you have ever seen a government vehicle and if you have ever seen a police car run code then you will realize that no matter what the hell it was it was abused daily...do not fall into that BS story.
I picked up my 05 MGM for 5k that was just absolutely mint with just over 100k on the dash. never used in fleet and well maintained with 18" fanblade rims. be patient and look around, for a little more you can find a personal vehicle for a little more than a former fleet vehicle. its a big difference.
If you still choose to go fleet, look for a SAP as mentioned. (street appearance package) it will come with a little more creature comforts like a bench seat in some models and carpet. they are USUALLY less abused but do not let that fool you. I have seen just as many SAP models that look like crap under inspection as i have seen PI models that look fantastic.
If gas mileage is your primary concern forget it. you will not be saving much...crown vic was modded with 3.73 gears, had originally 3.23, and the MGM had 2.73 and all of them had almost the mileage my marauder does mixed. i know some will debate me on this but hey i am just saying this is what i had and this is what you should expect.

IMO 04 was the best year for the CV/MGM. I can pull 25mpg on the highway with 2:73 and that is running 80mph.
I've had a few different Panthers over the years. Lower gears do not always meed better MPG on hwy. Way back when I had a 92 CV with the HPP so 3.23s that did 26.5 on the hwy and the wife had a 93 GM with 3.08s that did 25.5 hwy on the same trips, same speeds. The 3.08 car had to shift out of OD on hills while the 3.23 car would stay in OD much more of the time.
Either way I highly suggest a HPP car and stay away from P71s similar drivetrain (depending on years) with a better ride and other creature comforts for racking up that many miles at a time.

My latest DD is a 08' GM, picked it up with 33k on the clock, every option for 14k, 2.73 gears, I'm getting 26-28mpg on the highway @ 80mph.
My "other" driver, 05' E250, 5.4, 3.73's, towing package, I was lucky to get 14mpg on the highway. Got tired of $500-600 a month in fuel, at least I have something to show for my $$$$ now.
Good luck, I wouldn't buy an old cop car though, unless you like working on cars all the time, the last highly maintained CV I had, I had to put 3k in parts on it, just sayin'.............

Before the Marauders, we drove DD '99 GM and '99 CV. I tuned them with a Hypertech programmer. Averaged 25 mpg or 400 miles a full tank on premium.
Traded each with 195k miles after driving them for 7 years as we got both '99s on the same day.

Eric and I had a 2000 CV. Got mid 20's on the hiway. Don't need to tell you it's big, roomy and comfortable. I hated it tho. Just couldn't get out of it's own way. But knowing what I know now, I do think it's a lot of car for not much money. Still, after driving the Marauder, it would be hard for me to drive one that isn't tuned and geared for some performance. There goes the gas mileage...might as well drive a Marauder! JMHO BTW you might have a lot more self control than I do when it comes to not putting your foot into it! I don't like to get passed....LOL:cool:

I've noticed that older models got better mileage than the new ones. For example on my 92' with 3.08 gears I could get almost 400 miles to the tank.
On the 96' with 2.73s I could get about 370-380 to the tank. After swapping 3.55s in the mileage dropped to about 300 miles to the tank.
On my 96' Vic with 3.27s I can only get 300-350 to the tank.
I would avoid Police Interceptors because they will have at least 3.27 gears or even 3.55s as well as more aggressive tuning. If you want good mileage I recommend getting a civilian Crown Vic or Grand Marquis with 2.73s. If your commute is mostly highway and you are not a speed freak then you will get great mileage.

I remember there was an issue with the door stickers from the factory not always having the correct info. as far as gear ratio.
There's a small metal tag on the diff. cover which one of the bolts holds on with the gear ratio info on it.

If you go back to threads people posted about Marauders for sale, there are always a few (Dave included) who offer unsolicited opinions on what the asking price should be for vehicles they don't own.....
In one of those threads, I called folks out for doing this. He attempted to defend his actions, and so I thought giving him, some of his own, might clarify the issue some for him... Guessing it did not from his post back. No worries though. It is what it is:o

That is a 1981 Volkswagen rabbit truck. Diesel powered. My truck has a 1991 turbodiesel from a jetta in it, otherwise I don't think it would haul my 250lb a** around. If mileage is what you're after, look into an old rabbit diesel or a mk IV Jetta or golf TDI. (1999-2004) I think. They're reliable, easy to work on, and go forever on a 12 gallon tank of fuel. Do you really need a Moderator to tell you what the boundaries of commons sense are?
Being critical of a Mopar, or a Mustang ok....... Being critical of a Marauder on a Marauder website? Stupid and disrespectfull to fellow members, regardless of it was posted by the owner or a repost..... People come to this site for info..... Why would you possibly diminish value of another person's Marauder on a Marauder website?
Seen people get the boot for this on other websites dedicated to specific models of cars..... Its an unwritten rule. You just don't do it, but here at the Marauder website its all to common, and done repeatidly by you and a few others.
The real world is a place where one does not need boundaries defined for them by moderators... Just tryin to help you get there Dave.:burnout:

There is nothing wrong with a Honda, only if it's a DD or get around car. A late 90's and early 2000's Civic with manual trans could easily get your 25 mpg and up just depending on how you drive and it's overall condition. A friend of mine has a 98 4dr civic and he drives close to 110 mile round trip for work daily and has been getting about 37 mpg. He said he just had to re-learn how to drive to get the best gas mileage, doesn't carry any extra weight, did an intake, cat-back exhaust and plugs and wires.

Just to pass along CV fuel economy here is what I have got with my 1992 Trailer towing packaged 3.27 Trak Lock white aero CV:
The first ten year it averaged 23.5 MPG. Highest was 33 MPG (353 miles and 10.7 gallons). The worse it got was 17.6 MPG in the city of Chicago driving in a snow storm in January.
Trailer and Car Towing: 10.7 worse with my 24 ft 3,000 pound upright and 18.9 MPG pulling home a 1972 Mercury Cougar on a tow dolly at 75 MPH in Atlanta.
Overall now I get between 20-23 MPG but today's fuel is REALLY BAD here in Atlanta. Great comfortable car with decent performance. The Bullet wheels and Good Year RSA's make it handle great!!!! The Marauder is just a bit better.
They are great daily drivers. Good luck with your search.
