Coke-a-cola, sometime in the 1950's: Hey, we have the majority of the soda market by 70%! Wow we are doing good. Lets change the winning formula.
Result? Pepsi took over!
Ford: Watch as the other two take the 70% and knock you down to 20% - 30%. If your lucky! YOU SHOULD HAVE REVAMPED THE CVPI AND KEPT THE LEAD!

i dont see the unibody holding up. im not sure how the others are constructed but im probably safe to assume that its the same unibody construction. in which case they are all going to be junk very easily.

Ford screwed the pooch by killing the CVPI by simply updating it. Just my lousy two centavos.

All ford had to do was update the body on frame platform of the crown vic. Screw the uni body crap. They do a pit maneuver and the car is wrecked! Crown vic needs a new fender.

Most of the LEO's I have talked to about the confidence they have in driving the new cars at high speeds , most of them say they would feel safe & more comphy in the tried and true.

I did several ride&drives last year, one for Dodge at a small road course(2 miles or so), all the Charger police packages and Challenger's (bad guy cars) had over 20k on them all, and all those miles were WOT on a course. I drove and rode in several, none had any squeaks, rattles, crap falling off of them (can't say that for Chevy), all being uni-body cars.
You couldn't give me a new Ford Interceptor, what a gigantic POS, underpowered (the eco poop one) crappy shift schedule, a little water on the interior and all the windows/locks/mirrors & HVAC functions quit. When Fords stability control activates, get ready, no gas, no brake functions, at least the ones I drove, that was supposed to be the final programming for the model....... pure junk if that's what they are going to ship.
Chevy is a rocket ship, an installer nightmare and should prove impossible to get parts for..........perfect.

Frankly, I think Ford screwed the pooch on this one; they could have kept the Panther ongoing for another 20 years. The new Taurus is still a 6 banger (regardless of eco-boost) and I doubt many PDs except in real snowy places will spring for AWD. The Holden (Chevy) is a nice car but no PD is going to want to wait on parts from Australia to fix them and not engineering a column shifter so they could save a few bucks is even dumber, those cars will flop. I see this as a win for Dodge; its not a body on frame but out of the present offerings it makes the most sense to me in initial costs and maintanence.

Originally, all the Ford units were going to be FWD standard. Now... they will all be AWD standard. Lots more expensive parts for PD's to replace when they fail. Oh, and Ford's original claim to fame, that parts from the CV would transfer, total BS, your lightbar will, with different feet and straps. Past that, your looking @ 4-5k to to a changeover, plus labor. You cannot use strobes in ay of the new cars, the len's will melt, it has to be all LED, all new consoles, all equipment will have to be remote mounted. All at a time when budgets are getting cut.:mad2:
5 month wait time for the Chevy from order to delivery, who's going to stock parts for a car that has limited sales (L.E. only). So.... 5 month part wait? And speaking of parts for Chevy, back in the day, when I worked in a bodyshop, all the parts that Chevy sold for repair parts were all damaged, I was told they were seconds, 5 month wait for parts and they are seconds..... awesome.
As far as I am concerned, Dodge is the only game in town, and I pretty much can't stand Chrysler products.

Looks good on FORD.........there going from 70% Market share to 25% at tops.....
my department is going with Impala's as the cost is cheaper and they already know what hick-ups to expect with them,as for the mighty new Taurus....more cash and uncertain repair cost they dont want to gamble on.............
Sorry ford you lost out on 25 fleet vehicles yearly to chevy.............

Coke did change formulation in 1985, but swapped back to the orig a short time later, I don't see the CVPI as we knew it coming back...
Around here the depts that were early adopters of the Charger have stopped buying them and are currently buying Tahoes. A friend of mine who makes the decision on what cars and trucks to buy for a local city told me that when Chrysler was selling them that initial batch that they would be cheaper to run than CVs. Supposedly they would get better MPG. They weren't and the the accident rate shot way up. He says the Tahoe is cheaper to run overall compared to the Chargers they have, plus the officers are much happier with them too. I suspect in another year or two we'll be back to one company owning the police market and that will be Chevy.

And you bring up a good point, generally, resale on a 3 YO cruiser is 5-7k, the Tahoe is about 3k more than a Hemi Charger, but, It's resale is 11-13k, if we have to change, that is the direction I would like to see things go in. But, I am sure we will save the 3k, so we can lose 6k later, makes perfect sense.

The other thing my buddy says is that the way the guys drove the Hemi Chargers the Tahoes aren't increasing their fuel usage.

They don't exist, with the exception of 1 car. They are not a purchase, but a lease.... for 70k, then you have to give it back when you are all done with the 5 cylinder diesel.
Seen the car, the originators, talked to them, guess what my opinion is?

I am glad they just gave me a new 2011 CVPI. The drivers seat is a back killer (fixed that already), but I know it wont let me down. Should be in-service for about 4-5 years. By then the bugs will hopefully work out of the replacements.

Looks like Chicago is willing to give the Taurus a try
http://njstangers.org/forum/images/icons/icon1.gif Chicago Police Department orders 500 new Ford Police Interceptors
Filed under: Sedan (http://www.autoblog.com/category/sedans/), Government/Legal (http://www.autoblog.com/category/government-legal/), Ford (http://www.autoblog.com/category/ford/)
http://www.blogcdn.com/www.autoblog.com/media/2012/02/ford-interceptors-628.jpg (http://www.autoblog.com/photos/ford-police-interceptor-pace-cars/)
Ford (http://autoblog.com/ford/) has just landed a solid punch in the battle to win over police departments in the post-Crown Vic era. The automaker announced the sale of 500 new Police Interceptor models (a mix of sedans and SUVs) to the Chicago Police Department. The 2013 Interceptor is responsible for the addition of 230 jobs at the Torrence Avenue plant, which is conveniently located in Chicago.
Okay, so the location of the plant likely made the CPD's vehicle of choice a foregone conclusion, but the latest PI models may also help the department in terms of its fuel expenditures. With an expected fuel economy gain of 25 percent compared to the now-defunct Crown Victoria, and gas prices expected to get much uglier than they already are (http://www.latimes.com/business/money/la-fi-mo-national-gas-average-20120213,0,3846002.story), the more efficient Interceptor's arrival is nothing if not timely.
Some municipalities worry that the new Police Interceptors won't match the old Panther-platform cars' toughness when it comes to handling the rigors of police use, but Ford counters that its new PI models, a Taurus-based sedan and Explorer-based utility variant, are designed specifically for police work.
The automaker worked with the LAPD and and Michigan State Police to certify the the new vehicles for patrol duty. Departments can choose from a normally aspirated 263-horsepower 3.5-liter V6 or the turbocharged EcoBoost 3.5 with 365 horsepower and 350 pound-feet of torque.

My local PD stockpiled a huge supply of CVPI before the factory shut down. There has to be about 30 of them parked in a lot next to the Ford dealership with covers on them. I'll try and get a photo and post it later.

True That= Some Departments did stock up on cvpi's :D
I saw my first 2012 Explorer in Police livery today. It was a King Co/contract officer. It is driven by the officer that directs traffic coming out of the local high school and apparently he likes to drive it, since instead of sitting in the corner of the parking lot staring intently at his computer screen for 30 minutes or more after he was done directing traffic he actually went back out on patrol.

I drove 3 new CVPI for the last 5 years of my career. Last month I drove a SHO Taurus. Although I realize that the SHO is not the new PI, I felt cramped...give me some room, a V8, and high speed stability......of course I'm old school....
