Been pulled over by several of them and took a ride in the back of one due to a friend's stupidity in downtown Manhattan about 10 years ago. :mad2:

As one that had been to NYC a couple of times, a few things to look for an undercover NYPD cab is; 1) As Blackened300a said, they only do traffic pullovers & crime busts, never pick up fares or perform any function as a taxi cab. 2) The taxi medallion number on the body of the cab & if it has a rooftop advertisement, the medallion number on the front & back of it must match the NY tag issued to the vehicle. 3) The tag number/taxi medallion number on undercover taxis usually starts the first 2 digits with 2W or 6Y. 4) The passenger partition between the front & back seats is missing, although a few cab owner/operators are allowed to not have one installed. 5) On a hybrid powered cab, the "Green NYC" sticker should be placed on top of the checker design on the sides of the cab on the C-pillar & not on the trunk lid.
There may be other tell-tale signs of undercover cabs that are not listed, but that's what I remember reading about & noticing during my trip to the Big Apple & driving in it to most of the bouroughs. Bottom line is to make sure you don't give a reason to an officer/trooper to pull you over.
