The Enterprise is the longest aircraft carrier in the U.S. fleet. It is also the oldest, a distinction that brings pride as well as plenty of headaches for the ship’s more than 4,000 crew members. The ship is effectively a small city that frequently needs repairs because of its age. It was originally designed to last 25 years, but a major overhaul in 1979 and other improvements have extended its life. :flag:

"...Enterprise will be towed to the shipyard where it was built in nearby Newport News so its nuclear fuel can be removed, a process that will take until 2015. What remains of the ship after that will then be taken to Washington state so it can be scrapped.
The ship, among the first to respond after the Sept. 11 attacks, won’t be turned into a museum like some other carriers. Crews have to cut large holes in the vessel to remove the nuclear fuel, and it would be too expensive to repair..."

That's a dang shame, would be great to preserve the ship for future generations to tour and learn from.

I don't even want to know how crazy their Reactor Department is, glad I didn't get sent there!

Spent some time on this ship over in Nam, transit back to Nam from Hospital in Sasebo Japan. Sorry to hear this, I'm getting old and almost ready to be scrapped myself but I thought she'd out live me, maybe I was Wrong!

I read they wanted to make it a museum ,But when the reactor is taken out there wont be much left. The Enterprise is being replace with a new class in 2015 The USS Gerald R. Ford (CVN-78) type class.

There are expected to be ten ships of this class. To date, three have been announced:

Gerald R. Ford (CVN-78) (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/USS_Gerald_R._Ford_%28CVN-78%29), (2015) – Scheduled to replace Enterprise (CVN-65) (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/USS_Enterprise_%28CVN-65%29).
John F. Kennedy (CVN-79) (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/USS_John_F._Kennedy_%28CVN-79%29)[1] (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gerald_R._Ford_class_aircraft_ carrier#cite_note-jfk-cvn79-0), (2018) – Scheduled to replace Nimitz (CVN-68) (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/USS_Nimitz_%28CVN-68%29).
CVN-80 (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/CVN-80) – Scheduled to replace Dwight D. Eisenhower (CVN-69) (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/USS_Dwight_D._Eisenhower_%28CV N-69%29).

CVN-65 USS Enterprise commissioned 25 November 1961 ..... 51 years of service with distinction. :2thumbs:

USS Enterprise is actually the 2nd oldest ship in the US Navy. The oldest is the USS Constitution "Old Ironsides" a wooden-hulled, three-masted heavy frigate that was launched in 1797 and is still in commission.

So, the following statement in the article is incorrect "The Enterprise is the longest aircraft carrier in the U.S. fleet. It is also the oldest, a distinction that brings pride as well as plenty of headaches for the ship’s more than 4,000 crew members."

I'm guessing they mean the oldest aircraft carrier, not the oldest ship :)

BTW, why was this ship named "Enterprise? All the other ships are named after presidents.

And I vote the Enterprise replacement be Enterprise - A!

No, they aren't. Plus, you're thinking of Nimitz class carriers, of which the Enterprise is not.

Correct. Here is a list of carriers from the US Navy. Both current and past.

I have worked on and/or been stationed on 9 of them. Walked under 4 while in dry dock. I see the Ford being built everyday, gonna walk under it soon. Lincoln is coming in for overhaul, gonna walk under it when it's on blocks. Figures, a Ford and a Lincoln, both up on blocks.

...because if they named a ship "Chevy" they'd need a tow.
