View Full Version : The Glass is Half Full -- Marauder Attrition

Based on my estimates, March 2012 marks the point where the number of Mercury Marauders "on the road" is less than the number that have gone off to the boneyard or that big Car Show in the sky.

My Guestimate says that 5,502 (49.8%) of the original 11,052 remain.

Take care of what ya got ... they are getting more rare every day.

... or The Glass is Half Empty depending on how you look at it.

Hi all,

I use my 2003 300A Marauder as a daily driver and have done since I bought it in late December 2004 (35K miles). It recently passed 180K miles and I had to replace the rear axles/bearings/seals and get its first tune up! Both were sorely needed but it runs pretty good again. (Doesn't seem to be quite as smooth as I remember in the past.) I'm driving mine til the wheels fall off!

Hey Charlie, how's about you post up that attrition chart again? I was looking for it a while back and couldn't find it.

Hard to believe that many have met thier demise.
Given that, I should have gathered more parts.

In 2035 a bunch of us are going to be staring at Marauders on blocks because we can't find parts. Driving to Louisville in Prius rentals.

It's truly sad.

More incentive for us, the modern day:

"Mercury Marauder Knights Templar"

(Paul/blackened300A - Will make a nice T-Shirt) to keep these magnificent vehicles protected.

I was telling my Ford dealer (in for warranty supported service) the same thing about the 50% attrition rate - They stored my MM inside while work was being done.

Why don't we start a "collective" where we buy up wrecks and stockpile parts?

I don't know how we could do this or where the parts would be stored but we have a passionate group here and I bet we could come up with something.

If I'm driving a Prius, I'm putting a blower on it

Forced battery induction? Sounds sci-fi, like time travel would be possible.

Looking at the attrition curves, now is the best time to be hitting the junkyards & buying up parts, or parting out wrecks.

I'll just buy a Grand Marquis and slap a Marauder badge on it like all the Chevy SS guys do.:D

I would think the MM.net member Spectragod may be onto something as the "official MM parts hoarder". If someone would like to open up an auto junkyard/recycling center for just Ford Panther platform vehicles { Marauder, Crown Victoria, Grand Marquis, Town Car} & maybe call the business "Panther Land", I would definitely patronize it regularly, especially as our cars age & model specific parts becomes unavailable. The other models kept in the yard can service the refurbishment industry for taxi, police & livery fleets as well as regular people who are fortunate to own these cars as daily/occasional drivers.

I've been thinking the same thing for several months now (not to the extent of Roadwarrior's idea--which is a good one), as I plan to keep mine as long as I can. I've pondered how hard it would be to get OEM parts when the time comes for me to get 'em. I know it's very tough getting an OEM rear bumper; maybe come up with a collective list of 'hard to find' OEM parts and go from there? Is there a list of OEM parts we know are no longer available? What suitable 'aftermarket' parts are out there?

Wouldn't be a bad idea to seriously kick this around....JMHO.

I like that idea, wonder how we can get this thing going, we are a special group that needs to work together to keep our beloved Marauders on the road

Not only keep 'em on the road, but as OEM as possible!

(with the usual amount of aftermarket upgrades to suit our taste)

With the amount at just under half on the road, do the prices for our cars rise? I have no plans on selling mine just wondering these cars could possibly be a BIG $$ in the future
