As some of you may have noticed I don't own a Marauder.

I have been looking around for an 03 leftover and I may have one at a fine price but I can't seem to get 1 very important question answered. Every dealer I talk to gives me a different answer.

I have combed the MM.net threads and coudn't find anything to hang my hat on.

I am in NY which requires a higher emissions standard then most states.

I'm thinking of calling NY Motor Vehicles but I'm afraid of not getting a quality answer I can count on & getting stuck with a BIG problem.

Here is the question:

Can a NY resident buy a NEW car in another state if it is not set up for NY emissions and register it of on road use in NY ?

I could buy the car drive it home on temp tags and be stuck with a brand new car I can't drive. So I need to make sure.

Thanks
Jay

If it is a new car and has not been modified, you should have no problems, check the window sticker, I think you will find that it is certifed by the epa or whomever does that. L/M makes cars that will pass emissions in all 50 states. Just my .02. Perhaps someone with more knowledge on this can confirm or deny. If you can get an '03 for a good price jump on it, jump in it, and never look back!!

I know MA has adopted the California emissions standard and any car registered in MA must have the appropriate emissions certification. There are other states in New England that also require this, and I think NY as well, so if the car doesn't have the correct emissions certification, you can't register it there.

Maybe take a trip to a local dealer and look under the hood of a new car to see which certification it has...

Both of mine have the sticker under the hood which states they are California emissions certified. One was originally shipped to Florida and the other to Georgia. I think they are all California certified so it shouldn't matter what state it comes from as long as it has not been modified. As far as state or local inspection/certification stickers that may be another issue.

Fordnut is correct. ALL Marauders are LEV certified/California Certified.

The short answer is yes, positively, you can absolutely buy out of state and bring it to New York. You won't have a problem.

Jaywish, You can buy the car out of state and register it with temp tags from that state. That will give you 30-90 days depending upon the state's laws. Then when you get back home, you make an appointment with a local NY state inspection shop. A brand new car only requires a safety insp. not emmisions. It is legal to drive the car in NY becuase it has the temp tags. Your other option is to work something out with the selling dealer where in they can give you the VIN of the car you are buying. You can then insure the car with your regular ins company, and register it with the NY DMV. Or ask the DMV if they will issue temp tags. Either way, when you get the car home you take it to be inspected as soon as you can.

This is what I found out from a salesman from my neck of the woods. If you by a MM used without CA emmissions, it is ok. However, if you buy new, it must have CA emmissions. Since he deals with many NY snowbirds, he has run into this frequently. In fact, some LM dealers here only order their inventory with CA emmissions.

Did you see RoyLpita's comment?

I keep hearing that from dealers and you sound completly sure about the 50 state compliance issue...

The selling dealer in Wisconson agrees with you but I had another in Viginia nix a sale on this point.

I'd really hate to screw this up.

Can you elaborate?

Of course there is always something else to worry about. On this afternoons conversation with the dealer, the car has a July 02 build date and exibited minor paint flaws.

As Logan stated, all Marauders are LEV (Low Emissions Vehicle) certified and meet or exceed standards for all states including California and other "Green States".

I think the answers to your questions can best be found at:

http://www.nydmv.state.ny.us/register.htm#outofstate , and at:

Print out a copy of these pages for later just in case.

Good luck, and enjoy!

I purchased my 2003 MM new in North Carolina and had no problem with registering it in NY.

I probably should have thought of this sooner ....

I called ford @ 800 521-4140. Gave them the vin

#2MEHM75V73X623320 and asked them the question.

After about 10 Min I got back . This particular Marauder does not meet California,NY,MA and the other similar state emission standards.

Thanks to Mark Rush the NYS web site explains that all new NY registations for 1996 or newer vehicles must meet California emissions standard unless;

"The vehicle has an odometer reading of more than 7,500 miles, or the vehicle was registered to you in another state when you were a resident of that state, but you are now a resident of NYS, or the vehicle was transferred to you through an inheritance or court decree, or you purchased the vehicle in another state to replace your previous vehicle that was damaged, stolen or had a mechanical failure while you were outside NYS"

Now I don't doubt that some folks may have bypassed this limitation as I think I may done a few years back without even knowing it. Maybe the DMV clerks didn't or don't know the regs for this.

Either way I keep hearing different stories & (I shudda been from Missouri) I don't have 100% confidence in the Ford hotline but it seems that maybe there are different emission specs for Marauders.

I have no idea if this could be as simple mod to change or maybe even just a chip flash. No idea.

California emissions is an option for the MM. My window sticker show it has it. Like Roy's dealer, my dealer orders all their cars with the CA emissions box checked to avoid the problems Jay is encountering.

If you check dealer inventories online, the online window sticker will show if it was built with CA emissions

I love this place! I learn something everyday. I looked in a 2003 order guide and could not find any emissions option but when I went to the online order guide I was able to verify availablity of this. I ordered my car myself and live in NC and I know that I didn't opt for Cali.emissions but my car has it. I'm glad someone corrected my skewed info.
