 for taking the course. Granted it required AFAIK nowadays. Been riding since 1982 and wouldn't stop for anything. Gotta love it but you got to be safe. Only advice I can give, wear ATGATT. Meaning wear All The Gear All The Time.... Helmet,Jacket,Gloves,Pants,Boo ts.
Sure it may seem like a drag, a PITA, un-cool,....etc...
But if you ever do go down, you will be so very thankfull you did wear the gear. There are so many different factors out there. ie. stupid drivers, texting, idiots and such which make it worth while to wear the gear.
That being said, you will still be able to truly enjoy the feeling of riding a motorcycle which is unlike anything else on the earth.
Welcome to the joy and live it up man, you have found the secret to life.

Here is my 2000 Kawasaki Concours, 1000cc sport touring next to my 2004 P-73 Crown Vic.

same here been riding for a few years its great and trust me when you get the itch you wont be able to scratch it until you do have a bike of your own... but like crag said just make sure that you are overly watchful of stupid drivers. and the other advise i have is simple logic pipes save lives because if they dont see you atleast they will hear you :)

Nice choice! Riding since I was 16 just sold my last bike a few years back cause due to health reasons. I like Harleys but my need for speed always kept me riding fast bikes. Last bike was a GSXR-1100 The wife was happy to see it go cause she saw the crazy **** I would pull with it, Also refused to ride on it with me knowing how I liked to ride. Definete gas saver with the horrible gas prices.

Haven't ridden in years, but still get the urge to ride. Still have the bike in pieces in the garage, and that keeps me from doing so..
Definately what he said, wear all the gear, from personal experience it will save your hide if you go down, especially in a slide. .

The jacket will suck in stop and go traffic in the summer, but will act like air conditioning once under way.

Be safe and enjoy the experience, but always, always be aware of your surroundings.

and the other advise i have is simple logic pipes save lives because if they dont see you atleast they will hear you :)

Society may frown on them, but loud pipes will save your but.

Love to ride! Did Fl to AK last year, 12,000 miles in 4 weeks and it was a blast. Hoping to do New England this summer. The bike is my first passion even more so than the Marauder (sacrilege I know) The bike is also my daily transportation and in FL that is year round.

Very wise choice to take the riding course. I have taken three over my 30 years of riding. Just some information for ya the Sportsters are nice but do not have much engine and also have a very small gas tank. I think you would be better off buying an older Harley with the bigger engine if you must have a Harley. I currently own a 2006 Honda Goldwing and a 2007 Honda Shadow. Good luck with your choice and like the others said wear the gear!

2nd Victory sold on Long Island. 30k on me and her. With the Trilogy the Marauder and the Vic are on par.

JMTCW..... The Sporster is a great entry level Harley, but if you think you are serious about riding long term you will grow out of the Sportster quickly. If you are staying with Harley, consider some of the FX models or even better the FLH models. It took me a looooooong time to realize that FLHR Roadking is a great all around bike. Went thru almost a dozen before it hit home. I've been riding 48 years now, started on a 64' Triumph, went to Hondas then Kawasaki Z1 900. fastest production 4 stroke bike at the time. Bought one of the first Ninjas in Tampa. Yeah Speed thrills. Good luck.

Here a couple of pics of the Victory Kingpin I had for 11 months, and the V Rod I have now. Riding the Victory was like driving a 1976 Cadillac, all comfort and no power. The V Rod is not as comfortable, but man, it screams!!! :burnout:

Welcome to the world of motorcycling!! You will love it and will never want to get off it! I have always like Harleys and after dating (my now husband) for a year I finally broke down and took the class through my local DMV as it was waay cheaper than the motorcycle dealers wanted. After that,it look me almost 6 years to actually buy a bike. Got tired of riding with the hubby (sorry dear ) and wanted something of my own. I still am not quite comfortable with going out on the road yet. Between my 5'4" self and my little Honda Rebel, there isn't alot of me to go around when the stupid nuts behind the wheel aren't paying attention. So, for now I ride it around the house. Meh..

As was said the sportster is nice, but you'll grow out of it, and they are not that easy to sell to move up. As far as ride height, you can remove seat padding to get lower to the ground. Don't know it they still do, but they use to sell lowering blocks also.

Man I'm shocked to hear that. My v92c is a beast. 0-60 in, well fast enough to lift the front wheel and lift off occasionally. :burnout:Faster than I can shift.

I thought the freedom engines were faster.

Remind me to take a vrod for a spin one day.

Sportys are great bikes and a lot of fun. Also, if its your first bike, dont worry about bigger more expensive Harleys, sportys are just fine, very reliable and give you the most bang for the buck. Don't buy a new one, you can find 2-3 year old ones all day long with real low mileage for thousands off on craigslist.

I guess everything is relative. The Victory had plenty of juice to get you going, but the difference between winding out the V Rod and the Kingpin is night and day. With the Victory you had a decent smooth acceleration, with a very low redline, so you were bogging down climbing up the gears. The V Rod relines at 9500, and the pull between 4500-9000 is almost frightening. I literally have to pin my forehead between the drag bars to keep from being pulled off the bike. Much fun!!!:D

When I was about 12, my dad bought me a Honda C110 (50cc) and I used it as a dirt bag for several years. I put a nobby on the rear. Yeah I wanted a XR75 in the worst way but I was lucky to have this.
As much as I love street bikes (and I almost bought a GXR 1000 a few years ago) I don't have the balls to drive a bike on the street.
