That's not a very good definition. The beginnings go way back before any Chrysler letter car, maybe bootlegger cars? They looked as stock as possible but had full race flatheads and exhaust cutouts. I personally wouldn't call a Marauder a sleeper since it was built to be a performance car and many think they came supercharged from the factory. I think of a stock-looking Rambler American with a 500CID Cadillac motor as a sleeper. Closer to home, if someone had a GT500 drivetrain in a stock appearing Town Car or Grand Marquis LS - now THAT would be a sleeper in my book.

Mid-60's police cruisers with big blocks were always my idea of a sleeper.
Had two friends with these, one guy had a Plymouth with a 440 Mangnum that he tricked up a bit more (cam, headers, and a big Holley); the other guy had a '69 Biscayne with a 427 in it (IIRC, was an old FBI car).
Both plain janes, dog dish hub caps, low end interiors, but they hauled azz for big cars, surprised more than a couple folks back in the day.

Not really fair since a lot of 'vette guys think that anything that isn't a 'vette is slow.

Amen brother. To me a sleeper is a car that does *not* look like anything fast by its outward appearance. The Marauder looks bad azz. Subdued yes, sleeper no. A family sedan with a hopped-up drive or this crappy 1,262HP Nova

Nah at least in NYC anything that isn't German or Italian is considered a POS by some men and most women. Best case for reality is they think you're a crazy taxi driver.
Interestingly the newest hemis have been turning that around a bit. LOL. Shows you how screwed up things are here.
Oh and don't worry, sooner or later, our Marauders will look just like that Nova. No need to rush. See my avatar. If you want to speed that up slap some steel wheels on her, dresses down real fast.

Oh yeah I read in Cars Illustrated mag about the street racing back in the day in NYC where guys would have big N2O systems on white walled Buick Electra 225'swith stroked and bored 455's with two mufflers on each side to keep 'em quiet to get money races. Cars had to be sleepers to even get a race. IMO station wagons make the best sleepers though.

When I was in high school back in the late '80s, I knew a guy that drove a '72 Plymouth Fury station wagon. It was faded blue and looked like it was just taken care enough to keep the beast moving. What this guy really loved to do with the wagon was to pull up next to one of the rich kids at a stop light and rev the engine. The cocky rich kid in their Camaro or Nissan Z car would laugh and rev their engine thinking they've got an easy win. The light would go green and the wagon would wind up it's 440 and completely destroy any contenders.
I wish I knew what happened to that Fury wagon. I'd love to have it.
