I did not know that he got a new car every year for fake flying into space. Very nice except for all the crap the guy did to it. 427's rocked back then.

THIS IS THE ULTIMATE CORVETTE "BARN FIND". THIS CORVETTE WAS DELIVERED TO MR. NEIL ARMSTRONG THE FIRST MAN ON THE MOON, ON DECEMBER 15, 1966 FROM JIM RATHMAN CHEVROLET IN MELBOURNE FLORIDA UNDER A PROGRAM INITIATED BY MR. RATHMAN TO PROVIDE OUR ASTRONAUTS WITH A CORVETTE. THEY WOULD KEEP THE CORVETTE FOR A YEAR AND THEN TURN IT IN AND GET A NEW ONE. THIS CORVETTE WAS BOUGHT BY A NASA EMPLOYEE WHEN MR. ARMSTRONG TURNED IT IN AND WAS RETAINED BY THE OWNER UNTIL I PURCHASED THE CORVETTE FROM HIM IN FEBRUARY OF 2012. THE CORVETTE HAD BEEN IN A CLIMATE CONTROLLED ENVIRONMENT AND NOT DRIVEN SINCE SEPT OF 1981. Looks like it has been sitting out in an open field for the past 30 years. I HAD TRIED TO BUY THE CORVETTE FOR THE PAST 30 YEARS WITH NO LUCK UNTIL A PHONE CALL LED TO THE PURCHASE RECENTLY. Bought in February and Sell in April after trying to buy it for 30 years?? Something doesn't sound right? Sounds like a quick turn sale in "As Is" condition to parlay a $1000 investment into $250K without any effort at all. AS CAN BE SEEN IN THE PICTURES THE CAR HAS 30+ YEARS OF DUST .... and corrosion and paint damage and fading and rust and ...... AND HAS HAD FENDER FLARES CRUDELY ADDED BY THE OWNER DURING IT'S TIME IN STORAGE. Crudely??? What a crappy job and no finishing attempted. THE ONLY THING THAT HAS BEEN DONE TO THE CAR SINCE I PURCHASED IT IS TO GET THE MOTOR RUNNING WHERE IT CAN BE MOVED ABOUT THE GARAGE. I am surprised that the air filter passes enough air to let it run at all. I HAVE PURCHASED N.O.S. FENDERS TO REPLACE THE ORIGINALS THAT WERE CUT FOR THE FLARES. THE ONLY THINGS THAT ARE NOT ORIGINAL ON THE CORVETTE ARE THE WHEELS, WATER PUMP, CARB AND MUFFLERS. I HAVE A N.O.S. CORRECT DATE WATER PUMP AND HAVE LOCATED A CORRECT DATE CARB IN TEXAS. I HAVE ALSO OBTAINED A COMPLETE SET OF ORIGINAL G.M. WHEELS. MY INITIAL PLAN WAS TO RESTORE THE CAR ONLY TO THE POINT OF "SURVIVOR CLASSIFICATION" FROM NCRS, BUT TOO MANY THINGS GOING AT THIS TIME AND THIS CORVETTE IS A TRUE PIECE OF HISTORY AND BELONGS IN A MUSEUM OR PRIVATE COLLECTION. Its gonna take alot of work and money to put it into collection and display status. THE TANK STICKER IS COMPLETE AND STILL ATTACHED TO THE GAS TANK AND MUCH OF IT CAN BE READ THROUGH THE DUST, I MADE NO ATTEMPT TO CLEAN IT. Man, that is an understatement. THE CORVETTE HAS THE FOLLOWING OPTIONS: 427 C.I. 390 H.P-- A.C.--TINTED GLASS--ELECTRIC WINDOWS-- 4 SPEED TRANSMISSION--RADIO--FACTORY TRANSISTOR IGNITION--THE SPARE TIRE HAD NEVER BEEN REMOVED FROM THE CARRIER AS THE PICTURES SHOW. THERE IS A HIGH RESERVE ON THE CAR DUE TO IT'S HISTORY WHICH IS DOCUMENTED WITH THE ORIGINAL G.M. PROTECT-O-PLATE WITH MR. ARMSTRONG'S INFORMATION. THE MILEAGE CAN NOT BE VERIFIED DUE TO THE SPEEDOMETER CABLE BREAKING SOMETIME DURING THE LATE 1970'S Based on its condition, I'd suspect that it has FAR MORE miles than what is showing. Someone didn't want that cable fixed.
The bid is nearly $250,000 so far. Hope they check out this story completely before writing the check. Lots of work ahead to restore this one. From a historical standpoint, Neil Armstrong didn't walk on the moon until July 1969 so his ownership pre-dates his celebrity in the Apollo mission. No moondust in the driver's seat. ;)

Interesting but the car was never titled to Armstrong so its more like a free rental. Im sure somebody will pay big bucks for it regardless.

When I was a kid, I had a poster signed by all three of the astronauts on the first lunar lander mission. Sure wish I still had it. Sadly, there's probably not a lot of school kids today who Neil, Buzz, and Michael are.

On more than one occasion I have had dinner with Mr. Armstrong at my father's house. Does that mean I can sell my excrement on EBAY?

That car looks like a nightmare. Almost looks like it was in a swamp.

427's rocked back then.
Once you've experienced the launch of a Saturn V from the driver's seat on the nose, I suspect that 427 just doesn't seem the same again. ;)

Astronauts leased Corvettes from Chevrolet for $1.00 a year to get publicity for the Corvette.
