As with some other members, my radio circuit has crapped out. Volume jumps up then down, signal fades in and out, popping and some funny sounds like buzzing raspberries....:D
Anyway while surfing around found a suitable cheap substitute:

Two pieces of metal coat hanger. Bent into "U" shape works too. Had mine out many times with these.

I have no worries any more since I went with an aftermarket deck.
The original OEM "POS" is sitting in a box just in case but I don't know for what.
And I did use coat hanger bent to specs to get the OEM out.

Does anyone know exactly what is wrong with the radios?
I have 3 of them, all work fine in CD mode, nothing but static on FM...

Something with the soldering with the internal connections.....from what I heard.

My dad, who used to work on radios for a living (for Motorola, not just like car radios), thought it was a problem with the phase lock loop in the FM portion of the radio.
In most cases, everything in the radio will work, even AM reception, except for the FM receiver.

So is there any way to repair, or is it just a fatal design flaw?
Pretty weird that just about every MM radio has this problem... I've owned three MMs and 4 MM radios, every one was messed up.
This looks like a job for....FastBlackMerc!!!

My completely uneducated opinion is that by the time you could repair the flaw, you probably would've been better off buying even a cheaper double-din to replace the factory one.
I personally had a Kenwood DPX 503 in mine, it had a kinda retro look with dual dials on the face and I don't think I paid much over $100, great radio. I don't think those are available any longer though unfortunately. :(

If someone will send me their radio to experiment on I'll give it a try.

My original radio still works fine.
However, I did buy the autozone removal tool so I can change the speedometer lights, but radio still wont budge.

Try sliding the tools in just a little bit.

I'll try that. Everytime I try to jank the thing out, the tools just comes back out of the holes and the radio doesn't budge.

You have to leave the tools in while you pull the radio out. As soon as you remove the tools the catches go back into place.
