View Full Version : Looking at a New Ford Ranger

Mine is pushing 250k, this is my last chance for a new one.
No other truck works for me, so I'm searching existing Ford inventory.
Looking for a particular mix of options, any suggestions how to look nationally?
I can fly in and drive home if I find the truck I want.
Also have access to the Z plan, so I;m looking for the best deal as long is it is a Sport Supercab 2dr with cruise and sport seats.
Any comments are appreciated!

Try the build your own on the ford website. When you are done it will ask you if you want it to locate one for you. Or contact a dealership you like and they can look it up and get it for you. They can also have it built the way you want it. Hope this helps.

The Ranger production run ended in 2011, so the latter option is out, but you're right, Steve, Ford will help you locate one that is optioned as closely as possible to what you're looking for.

BTW, I've got a 2011 4.0 XLT SuperCab and am very pleased with the truck, everything I was looking for in a small truck, and it's put together real well.

Ford ceasing production on the Ranger was an error, in my opinion.
Most 'truck people' buy way more truck than they ever need (or will use). The Ranger (even 3.0-equipped) is more than adequate for what 50% of ALL truck buyers actually use their truck for.

Long live the Ranger!

Black Sport with cruise 2 door and sport seats. I'd like a 5 speed, but that looks pretty slim.

Big +1 on that.

I've owned three Rangers, a '96 regular cab stepside, an '01 SuperCab, and now my '11; all great vehicles, and just the right size for my requirements.

Never understood why small trucks ballooned into big ones. I had a 99 Tacoma and it was a great truck, the new Tacoma is about the same size as my Dodge 1500. The Ranger is a great little truck and hopefully Ford will replace it with another small truck.

Agreed, Jim.

They are actually continuing the nameplate in Europe, as a newly developed vehicle, but the truck is slightly larger than the former platform.

I know Ford is pushing the F-150 real hard, but IMO, there's still a very viable market for a "Ranger-sized" model. Sure hate to see it go.

I had an 86 supercab with the 2.9V6 and auto. Was absolutely the best vehicle I've ever owned. Could do most anything that I needed, got great gas mileage, and was very comfortable even for my big butt.

With the 3.7 n/a motor in the F150, I don't see any reason to get a ranger honestly. Better mileage, better power, better hauling capability, and a design that's not 20 years old. Sure, it's a tighter fit in the garage, but honestly, that's about it.

As for the whole people buy too much truck, I'd rather that be the case than too little truck... 95% of the time my truck runs around empty or hauling home depot stuff, but there's that 5% of the time when even the v10 struggles... It's much better to have too much truck than too little truck IMO.
Thanks for your opinion, but try to reach something in the middle of your bed without having to climb in to it. Since this will primarily be my wife's daily driver, size is even more important.
I've had 4 Rangers, the last a 2003 Edge that currently has 250k and still looks and drives like new. Lastly, this thread was intended to help me navigate the Ford network to buy a Ranger, not a discussion on why not to.

I love my B4000 (Ranger in Mazda clothing), 265k and going strong. Don't ever really have the need for a bigger truck as it pretty much hauls all I need it to and is much easier to navigate than a full size pickup for DD duty.

I'll only need something bigger once I get a boat. Good luck in your search hope you find the one for you.

Just be glad that they dropped the 3.sl0w v6 engine option.
Although I fully expect to get 200,000 or more miles out of my Ranger (111,000 currently),
I will never make the mistake of buying a 3.0L Vulcan V6 AGAIN.
Gas mileage is barely better than the 4.0L V6 and that engine has a bunch more torque and hp.
Good luck with your search!

A couple, a black one in TX, and a blue one here in FL. I'm traveling this week, so I'll get serious when I get home on Friday.

You are so right about the 3.0 Joe. I have literally wore mine out with 250K on my 03 Ranger Edge. The sad thing is I special ordered that truck specifically to get the sport seats and a 5spd, could have ordered the 4.0 but didn't to save the grand difference in price... I'm going to ride it all the way down, then consider a 5.0 or small Cummins diesel swap...:D

I have had two 04 rangers still have one and love it. It tows anything I have hooked to it. Best little truck ever. I was very shocked they stopped making it. Best of luck on your search. A local ford dealer bought about 35 rangers when they stopped making them and they all went quick.

Same here in Greenville. Fairway grabbed a bunch of 'em as well, I was fortunate to get one before they sold out. I would have liked to get a Sport SuperCab, but the one they had on the lot sold the week before we decided to purchase, so I picked up one of the XLTs they had in inventory.

So, you don't like Rangers, therefore that makes them a bad vehicle?

I love rangers, but they've been outclassed, and their time has passed. I love Commanche's, Willys, Model T's and Model A's as well, but I still wouldn't buy one as a daily driver.

The Ranger made perfect sense when the F150 got even worse mileage and the 4.2 or the old 4.9 i6 wasn't much of an upgrade over the 4.0 Ranger - and in some cases had less capacity than the ranger (had a 95 F150 with a manual that was rated to tow 3500 lbs max...).

With today's F150, the ranger is simply outclassed. If Ford got off its behind and put a small ecoboost 4 pot in it, and bring the chassis interior, and the rest of the powertrain up to date, it would be a helluva contender.

No different than the panther platform really... all they would have needed to do is put the mustang powertrains in the panther, design an interior that looks like it was made this century, and the panther could have gone on for 20 more years...

Okay, well, I guess I'll just have to keep telling myself how crappy my truck is every time I drive it from now on...

FWIW, a Ranger is exactly what I was looking for when I was truck shopping, glad I was able to find a 4.0 SuperCab before they all sold out.

Jeebus, ok, Ranger is the best vehicle to buy right now. Best payload/towing/fuel economy per dollar you can get in a truck. Better stockpile on them in case the rest of the world finds out.

Actually, I didn't even give payload/towing/fuel economy per dollar a thought when I went looking for mine. I wanted a small/mid-size truck with proven reliabilty. I've previously owned a '96 and an '01, and put well over 100k on both with zero issues.

If I wanted something larger and more powerful, it definitely would have been a full-sized Ford truck (actually would have loved a Raptor, but no way could I justify the price).

Between X Plan pricing and incentives, I got a well equipped 4.0 XLT SuperCab for under $20K out the door, to me that was value

Somebody must be stockpiling them, finding one on a dealer lot is getting pretty tough. ;)
