Carlos Beltran and the never-give-up St. Louis Cardinals began their latest comeback celebration quietly, plucking cans of beer from a blue bin that was hurriedly wheeled from the home to the visiting clubhouse in the middle of the ninth inning. ''How did that happen?!'' Beltran asked, speaking to no one in particular.

Had the Nationals not been so busy celebrating their three-run third inning, the one with the home runs by Bryce Harper and Michael Morse, they might have noticed something about the club they were on the way to vanquishing. The Cardinals players ran off the field at inning's end. They jumped in their dugout and they clapped. Shortstop Pete Kozma remembers several players shouting: "Let's go from here." They were down 6-0. Their top starter had been knocked out. They would not die.

More than anything this is the difference between the team that won the regular season and the one that won last year's World Series. The Nationals didn't understand this time of year. Most of the players, have never been in the postseason. They seemed surprised by the intensity. Just the day before third baseman Ryan Zimmerman said he was surprised how tired he was after the playoff games. The churn of October was so new.......

''We never quit,'' Molina said. ''That's our rule.'' The names might change. Not the outcomes. This is what the St. Louis Cardinals do. Pushed to the brink, they never blink.

Hours earlier, the red-dressed D.C. spectators began the night with chants of ''Let's go, Nats!'' right after the national anthem, then filled the raw October air with roars as run after run scored for the home team. But over the final innings, those Washington baseball fans wound up looking on with hearts in throats.

Across the room, standing alone by his locker, Mark DeRosa, now a National and once a Cardinal, "The Cardinals, they find a way, man," he said. "It's like you go over there and put on that Cardinal uniform and something just happens. They chip away and chip away and they just find a way to beat you."

Now it's a showdown playoff between the 2011 World Champ Cards and the 2010 World Champs, Giants. As for the Yanks and Tigers...I'll watch it..but that's four games down the road for my home team.

To the Nats......Great team, great season, you'll be tougher next year with Strasburg, and post season experience. See Ya next year!

Delmon Young was the offensive star for Detroit. He had three hits, including a home run off Derek Lowe in the eighth and the go-ahead RBI double in the 12th inning that proved to be the winner. He knocked in three.

The situation: With the bases loaded and two outs, Robinson Cano hit a chopper to Jhonny Peralta, who made an impressive barehand grab of the ball and fired over first. It was a bang-bang play and Drake called Cano out, though the freeze frame above show that was not the correct call. Had Cano been ruled safe, a run would have scored and the inning would have continued against Detroit starter Doug Fister, who struggled the first two innings but then retired nine straight Yankee batters after this play.

The Ugly........

It goes without saying, but this is a huge loss for the Yankees and their chances. Jeter went 1 for 5 with two strikeouts on Saturday night, but he's been one of the few reliable options on the Yankees roster this postseason, hitting .364 against the Baltimore Orioles in the ALDS.

Getting ready for today's games...BBQ Ribs and Brisket....Some Rotel cheese dip and corn chips for later snacks....and of course, "Headin' for the mountains" for some COLD Busch.....

Might be time for some video replay for the MLB. Some say it will make the game longer. I see it like this....The Mangers know the rules...The Umps know the rules...Usually when something goes bad, Out comes the manager for a "discussion" with the Umps. How long does that take? 30 second?, a minute? Two? I was recording this game, went back and this video sequence showing this was up on the screen in under a minute.

There's calls that should be and calls that shouldn't. Strike zone calls...NO. All teams have their books on each umpire and know in general how that specific Ump will call strikes and balls.

Here's MLB response, Baseball instituted video review late in the 2008 season, but it is used only to determine whether potential home runs have gone over the fence or are fair. The technology for some extended instant replay actually is available at Yankee Stadium, said Joe Torre, the former Yankee manager and current executive VP of baseball operations for MLB. The league is testing it at the Stadium and across town at Citi Field for balls down the line and trap plays.

Torre cautioned, however, it is not a cure for every blown call.

“Umpires, players, managers, they are all human and it happens,” Torre said of the mistakes. “Certainly we don’t mean for it to happen. But it’s been part of this game for a long, long time. Right now, with all the technology we have, it gets magnified.”

Testing? In a game where billions of dollars are generated, there's no excuse. C'mon MLB get it together....and get on the ball.

The Yankees lost the game, lost it 3-0, got only four hits, looked as if they needed Jeter as much as they ever had. The Yankees went on without Jeter. It just did not look the same at Yankee Stadium. Now it is as if the Yankees have fallen and can’t get up.

NLDS heroes Daniel Descalso and Pete Kozma were back wreaking havoc at the bottom of the Cardinals' order. In the fourth inning, the unheralded pair ignited a four-run rally with back-to-back doubles. Postseason Superman Carlos Beltran then punctuated that rally with a two-run blast. It was also a productive night for David Freese, who got St. Louis on the board with a two-run homer in the second.

The Cardinals bullpen also played an integral role in the win, holding San Francisco to two singles over the final 5 1/3 innings. In particular, Edward Mujica was dominant in striking out the side in the seventh. He was awarded the victory.
