View Full Version : Headlamps not working

Hi guys,
The headlamps (low beams and high beams) on my 2004 Marauder have stopped working.
The flash-to-pass high beams *do* work. The sidelamps and fog lamps work also.
I have checked the fuses and they seem fine. If the high beams work during flash-to-pass (but not for constant running) then I guess it can’t be the bulbs.
I went through the “lights on and off intermittently” symptom and made the relay-under-the-dash fix, a few years ago.
Any thoughts on the cause and fix to my current issue, please?
Thanks!

There's a relay in your LCM that's failed.
Two options:
1. PM fastblackmerc, he can get you fixed up with a permanent solution.
2. If you'd rather DYI,

FWIW, Option 1 is fastest and easiest, take it from one who knows. ;)

any tips for LCM removal? Mine just started acting up this week and I need to pull it out, but all the posts on CVN say the adjust. pedals make it really hard to remove.

LCM Removal:
The LCM is about the size of a brick and is located just to the right of the steering column, in front of the gas pedal.
There are 3 electrical connectors on the LCM.
Remove the bottom two connectors by depressing the tabs and pulling on the connectors.
Remove the 2 mounting screws with a 7mm nut driver or socket.
Push the LCM towards the gas pedal while rotating it up towards the roof. Once it’s free of the bracket, pull the back of the LCM down towards the floor.
You should now be able to release the last electrical connector.
Just reverse the steps for reinstallation.

Any idea on if any local shops would have the 5 pin socket? My lights finally went out and I drive at night from work, so I'm at the "holding the flash to pass in" stage while I get the parts today and tommorow to fix it. I have the knowledge to do it myself and can't hardly be without an LCM while waiting for a replacement, so am trying to get the parts to do it tommorow before work. However, I can't find the 5 pin socket anywhere...tried my local auto parts store and radioshack, neither had anything close... anywhere else that might have it local...?

Don't know how successful you'll be finding one locally. Mouser Electronics carrys them.

FWIW, if you replace the relay with the same model, it will fail again some time down the road, need to go the HD relay route.
Have you tried slapping the underside of the dash, right by the LCM when you've got the light switch on? Sometimes that'll get the relay to cycle, but it's only a temp solution.

FBM, how much are your repaired LCMs running, and do you have any instock? I know for a while people weren't sending back thier bad ones to you so stock was low...

I have 1 ready to go.
I charge $50.00. If you get the dealership to replace it your looking at $500.00 to $600.00, and the replacement will fail again.
If you send me yours the charge is $50.00 (return shipping included)
If I send you a repaired LCM the cost is $250.00 via PayPal. When I get your old LCM back I refund $200.00 back to you via PayPal

I'm sorry... I made this fix two years ago and just can't remember which relay to buy... could you remind me of the part number (or whatever) from Mouser HD model, please?
Maybe I didn't buy the HD model, I don't remember.

I don't even remember where the LCM is! Uh, could you remind me, please?

The LCM is to the right of the steering column.
If you replaced the relay 2 years ago with same same crappy relay as OEM that's why you have to replace it again!

Here's info on the OEM relay:

So... it looks like the external relay that I chose last time wasn't up to the job. (Should have just sent it to FastBlackMerc!)
I'll need to swap out the one I have an install a new one.
Would this one be an appropriate choice, please?

The X036 (last part of the part #) has an unsuppressed coil. You can also get the X041, which has a diode built in, which protects the electronics controlling it. There's also an X033, which uses a resistor for suppression.
I don't know if the EATC circuit board has its own suppression or not... I'd check the numbers on the original relays, and pick one with the same type of suppression.

FBM, Are you still repairing LCM's? Mine is out and would like to get it repaired vs. running into the same problem with another factory LCM.
Thanks.

FastBlackMerc repaired my LCM and I installed it today...Works Great! Thanks again for the help! The idea of paying $530 to the dealership and have it break again in the near future is absurd.

Glad I could help out & save you some coin in the process.
Remember the repaired LCM is guaranteed for as long as the car is running.
