What kills me is that Harleys and custom bikes can have pretty much open pipes and roll the throttle at 5 in the morning and that's a-ok. Here at least.:( I know a nearby town that passed a noise ordinance and it had an unusual side effect. A residential neighbor of a Dairy Queen had the store shut down for two days for violation of the noise ordinance bythe exhaust fans on the roof. The owner had professional sound measuring experts come in (at his expense) to prove thatthe decibels created by the vents were not above the levels of the new laws.

Here in Maryland they have set db levels for cars, trucks, motorcycles and commerical vehicles. Modifying the exhaust which results in increasing db sound levels is deemed illegal. BS state that's all I have to say.
The cop was just bored and wanted something to do. Gave me the two fines for the exhaust and said I was speeding, yet gave me two warnings for speeding. Put on the ticket I was in a 25 mph zone... at no point is there a 25 mph zone on the road I was on and before that I turned off a 50 mph zone.

Pretty much anything you do to make a car exhaust louder is going to draw a response at some point from the Police.

The "speeding" stuff was just two warnings no fines or points with these. If they were I would being going to court to fight it without a doubt.
What irritates me the most about everything is I can't count how many times I have gone past a cop, been next to a cop or shoot the shyt with one at a gas station about the car and hearing "wow that car sounds good and healthy, want to trade?" or "I really wish we had some of those on the force".

I think I might just request a trial and hope the state trooper doesn't show up, if he does I'll plead guilty with explanation and hope the judge is in a good mood.

I know right! I'm glad I looked it up cause I was close to just paying the fines and moving on. I could understand if I romped on the gas, floored it, spinning wheels but I was doing nothing of the sort. I may have given it more than normal throttle but most of the time I need to because of the converter but wasn't flying down the road, cruising at 35-37 mph in a 30 mph zone even which my speedo reads 1.5-2 mph faster than I am actually going anyways.
I really had no problem with this before, even laughing at it and thought eh maybe I will go a head a tone it down some but I will be requesting a trial for sure. My driving record is pretty much clean besides a few warnings and one speeding ticket over 6 years ago, I was polite and respectful to the trooper. What answers I did give him he didn't like and told me how it was, I replied each time, no officer I am not arguing with you about it or anything, just explaining.
After thinking about why I knew the trooper looked so familiar was because I had seen him at my sister's work about 1.5 year ago, he heard my car then and even complimented me on it's nice tone.
I wonder if the Judge will take into affect that the warnings I was given were incorrect and if that will reflect any on the validness of the citation that carries 1 point.
Sorry for the rant, no one else really to talk/vent to about this matter. Tried talking to the g/f about it and it was way over her head.

Yeah agreed. I think there is a big difference being "obnoxious" and obviously trying to make a noise (i.e. spinning tires, laying rubber, showing off etc) but it's subjective really. I can't believe that trooper complimented you before and then gives you a ticket.

Caught doing what? If the one citation didn't carry one point I would just pay it and be done with it but I was not driving in any manner to create excessive noise ie revving, spinning wheels or excessive throttling, that's the issue I have with this.

I had thought about those as well. There are plenty of them on ebay. Heard videos on youtube but would need to hear them in person before deciding on them.
All in all, I really don't mind changing mufflers as I do want to put some Aeros on my foxbody since it will be re-tagged Histroic and going to remove all the emissions related stuff off of it.

Thank you and I am going to court to try and not get the 1 point. I didn't get a repair order or anything.
It will still be mean sounding if I change it but I would like something a little more quieter since I have been driving the car more and I want to add a little bit of back pressure. I have to get the rpms up into the drone zone for the car to really get moving, love how it sounds @ cruising but taking off from a stop it just feels like a slug.

I'll pay real close attention tomorrow, but I do believe my range is 1500/1600-2000/2100. Drone is louder when in lower gears, too.
Mayhap I'll make a vid in the am on my drive to class....say the first 30-60 seconds...just don't know how I can safely do this, though...

That's been my thinking as well. Explain to the judge, yes I did modify the exhaust but not purposely to cause more noise but for the performance aspect. The side effect to doing this did make the exhaust tone louder, to correct this I have installed restrictive mufflers to help quiet the exhaust tone down. I was not driving in any manner to purposely cause more noise, there is a certain rpm range at low speeds where the exhaust is fairly loud and I believe that's exactly what the trooper heard and caught his attention. I was not revving the engine or heavy on the gas trying to make more noise, I do apologize for this and have taken the steps to try and ensure this does not happen again.

Lucky! Saved yourself a nice chunk of change. Luckier that he didn't click that SERO button on the eTix computer. Then change would have to come your way when you put your stock exhaust back on!
Depending on your driving record, you'd have gotten a PBJ and no points. In Harford, if an officer is unavailable due to a job related issue (emergency call, accident...) the Judges have postponed the officers entire docket!
In the meantime fellow CAMmers, go easy on that go pedal around town and remember, there is a time and place for shenanigans. Be safe.
