View Full Version : Maybe I have gears?

Ok, so after some research, I've found that changing out the gears can increase the RPM range at cruising speeds. Some of you may know, I just purchased my Marauder pre-owned. Upon inspecting the vehicle, it appears that the diff cover has been off before. I know this because I could see the RTV silicone that someone had previously used.

When cruising at about 70mph in 4th gear, I find the RPM's sit at about 2500. The only other catalyst in the equation, is that I'm running larger than normal tires in the rear. Rather than the original 245/55r18's it comes with from factory, it's got 265/50zr18 Nitto's. I realize that tires larger than OEM tires may affect the RPM's.

Thoughts? Experience? Do I haz gearz???

265/50/18 are like within .200 of the stock 245/55/18 in terms of diameter, and are actually shorter, they are wider tho by almost an inch.. Tire diameter is not an issue in this case. Jack up the rear and spin the tire one revolution and watch how many times the driveshaft goes around would be the easiest to narrow it down.

And RTV sealer was use from the factory on the diff cover.

Sounds like 4:10 to me, I run around 2500RPM at 70MPH on 255's with mine.

Running 265/50/18 tires with 4.10 at 2500 rpm at 75 mph

Confirmed.

Changed the oil today at the shop, while the oil was draining I marked the driveshaft and inside of the rear tire and spun it. Just over 4 turns on the driveshaft with one wheel rotation. That, coupled with the RPM range at cruising speed, the gas mileage (ugh), and the feedback from here, leads me to be pretty confident that I have 4:10 gears.
