View Full Version : Ooops! Speeding ticket!

MARAUDERCHICK

Well....I got my first speeding ticket last night!
I was clocked at 73mph in a 55mph zone. (good thing he didn't clock me a few minutes earlier)
Not bad though....I've had the car for a year and 2 months and this is the first speeding ticket I've gotten in it. Of course.....this ticket came AFTER I modified!!!:P :P :P

You know. I would hate to have the cops around when I was playing the other night. Something about 90 in a 35. They would have locked me up right then and there.

Hey MChick -

Two things you should look into --

Escort 8500 and the ZR3 laser shifter. I believe both can be had on ebay for around $500.

I flew by two IA State Patrol cars in the median this AM at 80. (before sunrise) They use laser but the ZR3 kept me safe. If they had been using radar, I would have "seen" them coming over a mile away.

The only downside is the complacency from knowing tickets just won't happen!

Thanks,
-Andrew

The ZR3 is available for $350. It is highly recommended that it be professionally installed by an authorized Escort dealer. The dealer in my area does it for $450 out the door.

What all of us who've been caught on radar should do is complain to Ford. I distinctly remember (and even saved) the ad in Hot Rod Magazine that stated It won't show up on radar. Only thing I can think of is that the LEO radar technology has caught up with us.

I installed a Valentine V1 in the MM. I've had it since the 90's. I've also had a K40 Laser diffuser installed since 1/03 without any problems there either. Both work great. Since most of the other detectors displays are relatively small, the V1 works great for my eyes. Picked up one ticket since I've had the V1 and it wasn't the detectors fault. I forgot to turn it on and the officer was using instant on around a blind corner. Got the ticket in my old Cobra.

Bob, where did you purchase it and get it installed? Was it a Chain store, (ie. Best Buy, circuit City...etc.) or a local place? I just might need to get me one of each.

The Escort 8500 and zr3 combo from one guy is on sale on ebay right now for $500, and another at auction for around $410 right now (will go up I'm sure).

I paid $65 for the installation at Best Buy - I also let him drive the car! (just for the ZR3 install - the 8500 was easy) They did a great job.

Here's the thread:

http://www.mercurymarauder.net/forums/showthread.php?t=5922&highlight=escort+8500+system

I have $600 in the whole system. The 8500 and zr3 are linked so the display of the 8500 includes everything - again check the other thread) The linkup is why I bought these two - they were made to go together.

I even got the Best Buy guy to make it a "lifetime" install. If I ever want to move it to another vehicle he would do it for free. Of course he said he would want to buy my MM, too!

Gordan, the V1 was mail order only, not cheap. It's been ungraded once since I bought it back way back when. The K40 was ordered through a local stereo shop for about 3 bills. I installed it myself in about an hour. The hardest part was making a level mount behind the grill for the diffuser unit. The V1 is mounted at the top center of the windshield behind the tint. Sits low enough to pick up anything from the rear also. I really like the arrow indicators that the V1 uses!

Well if you are fortunate enough to get pulled over again by the “Village People” or LEO with glazed eyes as a result of too many glazed donuts, You might try this scenario, assuming the LEO is below the rank of Sgt. :D

Driver is pulled over by a policeman. The police man approaches the driver's door. "Is there a problem Officer?", the driver asked. The policeman says, "Sir, you were speeding. Can I see your licence please?"

The driver responds, "I'd give it to you but I don't have one."

"You don't have one?"

The man responds, "I lost it four times for drink driving."

The policeman is shocked. "I see. Can I see your vehicle registration papers please?"

"I'm sorry, I can't do that."

The policeman says, "Why not?"

"I stole this car."

The officer says, "Stole it?"

The man says, "Yes, and I killed the owner."

At this point the officer is getting irate. "You what!?"

"She's in the trunk if you want to see."

The Officer looks at the man and slowly backs away to his car and calls for back up. Within minutes, five police cars show up, surrounding the car. A senior officer slowly approaches the car, clasping his half drawn gun.

The senior officer says "Sir, could you step out of your vehicle please!"

The man steps out of his vehicle. "Is there a problem sir?"

"One of my officers told me that you have stolen this car and murdered the owner."

"Murdered the owner?"

The officer responds, "Yes, could you please open the trunk of your car please?"

The man opens the trunk, revealing nothing but an empty trunk.

The officer says, "Is this your car sir?"

The man says "Yes," and hands over the registration papers.

The officer, understandably, is quite stunned. "One of my officers claims that you do not have a driving licence."

The man digs in his pocket revealing a wallet and hands it to the officer. The officer opens the wallet and examines the licence. He looks quite puzzled. "Thank you sir, one of my officers told me you didn't have a licence, stole this car, and murdered the owner."

The man replies, "I bet you the liar told you I was speeding, too!"

I blew through a State Patrol Radar Trap at about 80 MPH in a 55 MPH zone in very light traffic. I was still accelerating at the time :burnout: until I saw the trap. I expected the chase car to pull out and pull me over, they never did. The only thing I could think of was that they saw the MM and thought I might be an LEO. Kathy - I would recommend pleading Not Guilty and have your case heard in court. You have a 50 - 50 chance to beat it. If you feel the case is not going your way ask for an adjournment to obtain legal council. Good luck.

MChick, I always go to court if I get a speeding ticket and 90% of the time I walk. The other 10% is always no points, no insurance notification, and much reduce monetary settlement. I even have a great book written on how to beat the speeding ticket racket.

Why don't the ever have a crack down on Rapist and Baby Killers? Oh, there isn't any money in it. Speeding tickets are a very large cash cow for municipalities all across the country hidden under the guise of slowing people down to save lives. They also are a lot easier to catch than the others and speeders don't artgue much they just pay. Don't pay, fight it Mchick. It says these are the maximum posted speeds for these type roads. There are lots of 55 mph roads in the Metro Atlanta area. Now the trick is contacting the GA State DOT and seeing what the traffic engineers have said the speed limit is to be on a specific road. A lot of muniocipalities post signs that are not IAW the DOT rules, like 10 mph under to make sure they get enough speeding revenue. If you show up in court withy the proper documentation the Judge isn';t happy but they then don't have a case and you walk. :uzi: :uzi:

I hope I don't jinx myself, but I have had a few positive experiences. On the way back from Ennis last summer, Susan got clocked at 80 in a 25 construction zone in AZ. The officer was actually pretty cool. He came up and said by looking at the car he said it didn't surprise him it would be speeding. Checked the paperwork, and made sure no DUI and off with a written warning. Then last week on my way home at 330AM, I started out at 75 (10 over the limit). Then the thought of my nice toasty bed got me up to 85, then finally 95. I wasn't too worried because the car headlights behind me didn't look like a Crown Vic police car. After 6 miles when we got into a lighted area I realized the "Mercedes" behind me had a light bar across the roof! I pulled to the right lane and waited for the Christmas lights. He just pulled up alongside for a few seconds and drove off. Found out later it was a trooper who loves MM's and is trying to get one. So I can't say anything bad about the LEO's here....

A radar detector is absolutely required for any MM especially a modified one. It has saved me dozens of times. Also, I never speed on any two lane road only the interstates. I rarely use the fast lane. Try to stay mostly in the far right or middle lane - yes, it's not that difficult. You must always be looking for LEO in the mirror and side of road. After a while it becomes second nature. A safe place on interstates are some of the long entrance ramps - man they are fun.

I have a Valentine also. Every test of laser ecm units I have seen shows that they don't work hence my lack of owning one. I'm in sales and consider myself a professional speeder, do you guys have any data that shows the laser ecm stuff works?

The *laser* jammers work just fine. I have all the data I need, and that is confused looks from LEOs when they use laser on me. Why wouldn't they work? It's perfectly legal in most places to jam laser - at least for now.

I know Logan has done his own tests with a lidar gun - maybe he will chime in here.

*Radar* jammers are illegal. The passive ones don't work at all and are a scam. The active ones work, but they don't work on Ka band (which is the ever more popoular band choice lately) and they will get confiscated and they will get you a nice fine to go with it. The jammers are detectable.

Thanks,
-A

Rookie - first of all that's not how it works. Secondly the laser jammer units are mounted in the front and rear of the car, not near the detector.

For information on this, check the thread link I posted earlier in this thread about my install.

Escort Shifter ZR3 ($449.95 suggested retail) http://www.radartest.com/images/EscortZR3.gif

Escort doesn't use the J word, choosing instead to diplomatically christen their jammer a "shifter". Terminology aside, we found it to be a tie with the BEL LaserPro 904 for user-friendly operation and ease of installation. Like the BEL, its twin front and single rear transceivers simply plug in to a junction box whose two wires attach to power and ground. The bulk of the installation time, as in the BEL and Blinder, is consumed by mounting the transceivers. Figure on a couple of hours for a proper job although it doesn't take a graduate engineer to get it done.

The Escort Shifter ZR3 uses the control/display module, sans a few features, from their high-end remote detectors and we found it to be the class of the field. Audio alert volume can quickly be adjusted using the simple thumbwheel control that also is used for power on/off chores. Better yet, the ZR3 can be linked to Escort's superb Passport 8500 detector using one thin cord with telephone-style connectors at each end. Once coupled together, the 8500's text display will spell out warnings of laser attacks and also tell you when it's doing its laser-shifting routine. Of the units tested, we found this to be by far the most elegant way of conveying information.

The ZR3 proved to be quite adept at confusing lasers, achieving a remarkable 99 percent efficiency rating against the five guns. In fact, had it not missed our 450-foot threshold by a scant two feet against the LTI Ultralyte LR gun, it would have scored a perfect 100 percent, the best jamming ability we've ever witnessed. If you want better protection against lasers, most likely you'll have to buy a judge.
