Having just dealt with my wife's S197 Mustang and Steeda CAI smog issues:http://www.mercurymarauder.net/forums/showthread.php?t=80370

I am going to be looking for smog legal components for the Marauder which is due in 2 years; this state is killing me. On my local mustang forums there have been reports of mobile smog check points in the Bay Area....

My Next Steps:

1. 90mm Lightning MAF - already sourced SCT BA 3000 isnt CARB
2. 03/04 Mustang Cobra exhaust manifolds - already sourced - FRPP shorty headers not CARB
- or JBA Shorties with CARB EO for Mach I CARB EO D-216-27
3. Re-install my 2nd set of catalytic converters - kept my old ones
4. Remove the JLT intake tube and use the K&N 57-2563 CARB EO D-269-31 with the Lightning MAF
5. Future - Vortech SC S-Trim black air to air with CARB EO D-213-27 - only SC with an CARB EO for the Marauder.

I know my car passed the sniffer when I tested this year but it failed the visual:mad2:the JLT CAI and MAF where in question even the FRPP shorty headers.

I'll keep this open as I source CARB approved performance parts and popular bolt on modifications to keep us on the left coast from going through what Ive been already going through.

Next Post will be for reference only.

Cheers,
Brian

Almost did in 06 (to your parts) but didn't work out. Stuck here for a while....just have to know the rules and work within them a PIA yes. The Mustang is actually a lot easier since the aftermarket is vast with plenty that are CARB EO. The Marauder not so lucky; but the MACH I does help since most parts fit both and have CARB EO.

So what do all the older hot rods do or don`t they check after a curtain year ??

1975 and older are exempt from CA smog every two years. Rules changed this year; only ODBII and visuals no tailpipe test.

Thanks for putting this together Brian.

This something I've never understood about The People's Republic of Kalifornia. If tailpipe testing shows the car is producing LESS THAN the reference amount of emissions, what earthly difference should it make whether some part has a stupid number printed on it? Isn't the whole point to monitor the amount of emissions being produced? If it's acceptable, why should anything else matter?

Government control, it is all about telling you what you can and cannot do.

I never feel to sorry for the people of Cali, they voted the people in and they are being rewarded for it, I lived in San Diego for a year and coming from the Mid West there is no way in Hell I would have stayed, couldn't stand the Parades in SF etc. but our Good Mayor of Chicago is doing what he can to turn us around!

LOL at california. Feels like NY is about to go mad max and we can still laugh at cali.

You can't install an unnaproved part on your engine, even if it's more efficient, but you don't have permission to label stuff that goes in your body as a GMO.

Hahahahah. Useless. Hey maybe MM.net should hire the Monsanto lawyers. LOL.

It is all about the money. As a citizen of the nation of Kalifornia, I learned that the same supercharger that is CARB approved for the Ford Mustang Cobra and Saleen Mustang with the same engine as my MM is not Kalifornia CARB legal to have on the MM.

The reason is that Kalifornia CARB charges the manufacturer a fee of Tens of Thousands of dollars for every vehicle model that they give approval for.

Not a lot of MM's out there compared to Mustangs. So even though a company may be willing to pay Kalifornia tens of thousands of $ to have a product approved for the large Mustang market, they will probably hesitate to pay tens of Thousands more to have it approved for the exact same engine on the MM. :cheesed:

Same thing for gun approval. If Colt, Smith & Wesson or Kimber want a particular gun approved for California, they must pay the state a large fee to drop it from a ladder to make sure it doesn't accidently discharge. So the same gun that may come in a 5 inch barrel and a 4 inch barrel requires two large testing fees instead of one.

This state is broke and they are trying to milk everyone of us for every cent the can extort. :mad2:

I guess I'm naive when it comes to politics, but allowing the CARB to make it illegal to install something that LOWERS emissions is just...well...I don't have words for it.

Al joking aside. This Marauder CARB Number stuff and other info should be made into a sticky for other prisoners of Nazifornia.

Just to add to this, the Superchips Flashpaq 1865 and Cortex 1950 fall under CARB D-330-10 for the 2004 Marauder. No mention of 2003 in the CARB D-330-10

But the old Superchips 1725 sucks so not sure if the above are any good.

One of the Corvette owners on LS1tech actually had documentation of the results of the tailpipe test when he went.

He had installed longtube headers with high-flow catalytic converters as well as a mild camshaft with enough overlap to at least notice a lope in the idle.

On paper, with all of those mods, he STILL fell within acceptable limits for volume output of the four main air contaminants that they look for in that test (forgot what they are), BUT since the longtubes relocated the relative position of the cats on the car, and since they weren't OEM cats or at least manufacturer grade replacements, he failed visual and that was it.

**** that place.

I've always wondered if they'll do anything to an out of state vehicle. I plan on one day running my fox up PCH. That car has no EGR, No cats, and long tubes.
