Although his show was before my time, I grew up watching the reruns. He lived about an hour and a half east from where I live. Is Ron Howard the only surviving cast member from the show?

Nope....
Jim Nabors (Gomer Pyle)
Betty Lynn (Thelma)
Maggie Peterson who played Charlene Darlin is also alive, but not a regular cast member I suppose

Legendary actor and comedian Andy Griffith was laid to rest quickly, buried by family less than five hours after he died.
Griffith's body was placed in a grave on Roanoke Island near the coast of North Carolina at approximately 11:30 a.m., a funeral spokesman told CNN (http://www.cnn.com/2012/07/03/us/north-carolina-griffith-burial/index.html?hpt=hp_t1).
"It had been planned for some time," said the spokesman. "This was the wish of his family."
I don't know, seems a little quick..(read suspicious), could be nothing.

Betcha they're up there right now. . .
Barney Fife: [while relaxing on the front porch after Sunday dinner] Andy, you know what I think I'm gonna' do?
Andy Taylor: What's that Barn?
Barney Fife: I'm gonna' go home, have me a little nap and then go over to Thelma Lou's and watch a little TV.
Andy Taylor: Mmm-hmm.
Barney Fife: Yep. . . I believe that's what I'll do. Go home. . .have a nap. . .and then over to Thelma Lou's for TV.
Andy Taylor: Mmm. That sounds like a right fine time. Mmm-hmm.
