I took the photo in my back yard. Can anyone identify the type of grasshopper?
Reminds me of the National Geographic.

Billy you are from LA. They are the 5 year locus. They do only come out every 5 years. Great toasted or used to bate hooks. I like mine when they are not mating. They get jucy during that time.

More boring information. The periodic Cicada is not a Locust (or grasshopper) at all (even though people call them that) and they come out of the ground in 13 year or 17 year cycles, mate, then die ....... where and when is shown in the brood map here >>>> http://insects.ummz.lsa.umich.edu/fauna/michigan_cicadas/Periodical/Index.html

It'a a German grasshopper. Weinershtuckinsieder, I believe.
