View Full Version : Collision on I-70, Marauder damaged - wife and I are fine

An eerily similar story to a_d_a_m's $7,200 worth of damage thread in the lounge, my unfortunate incident was in my MM on I-70 in Maryland

Wife and I were on our way to a CAM Meet (at my uncles' seafood restaurant in Eldersburg, Md) when I hydroplanned going over a bridge. I was going at speed with traffic (65-70 MPH) when car started losing traction and I skirted across all 3 lanes in a slow arc. My right rear quarter hit the guardrail first and then whipped my front around. At the the time I was facing oncoming traffic in the breakdown lane on the far left lane.

A good Samaritan stopped and called 911. My wife and I are absolutely fine. The bumper guards and crumple zones did their job. We are immensely lucky that we didn't hit anyone else and that we have little to no injuries.

Thank you to Gordon and Chris who were behind us on 70 and stopped when i texted them. We got the Marauder towed back to their house for the time being and I am in the process now of filing a claim and getting it looked at by the adjustor.

I am pretty bummed about the whole thing and I just hope that it isn't totaled. :( I know how we all feel about our cars so when something like this happens, it really takes the wind out of your sails. I feel like I lost my best friend. I am so thankful for the support i've received over the past couple days and it's truly a testament to this site and the supporters and friends i've made over the past couple years that make it absolutely remarkable. Thank you again to Gordon and Chris for being there for Michelle and I on Saturday.

Pics are attached but please be warned, they ain't pretty...

Once I get the MM into a shop and assess damage i wont know the full extent, however i will need to keep an eye out for some parts (hood, bumpers, qtr panels, headlights)

Luckily my airbags did not deploy and my interior is fine.

Thanks man, yes we are both fine. Hard to believe it but our cars are tanks and they are built to last. Unfortunately they are also built to crumple and take most impacts out in a collision. The most important part is that we are fine. No scratches, bruises, concussions or broken bones or anything. We truly are lucky

I put Ryan's car on my lift yesterday and took a look underneath. All damage appears to be body work and no noticeable frame damage, looks straight as an arrow. One lower control arm on the passenger side took a ding, but I have one if you want it. Chris took pictures.

I have already been on the parts hunt for you Ryan and found a front bumper cover. And I need to talk to you about getting some more parts for your car.

We will get the NU-NRG Rauder back together soon. Chris and I were just glad we were there to help and that you and Michelle were not hurt.

hey man its not that bad. The MM did its job and protected you and your wife. Having crashed my first MM 3 times I know that feeling. I felt like I lost it all after I seen my first MM totaled like that.

Your car definitely looks fixable. Air Bags not deploying is a BIG BIG PLUS!!

Looks like all you really need is

Front Bumper
Rear Bumper
Head Panel
Corner Light
Rear Quarter Panel doesnt need to get replaced its fixable
Front Fender also looks fixable not sure from the pics if it needs to get replaced
Trunk lid realigned
Hood realigned

I say from a wild guess about 5000 to 6000 worth of damage.. Good luck bro you'l be Marauderin back in no time. Dont sweat it.

Terrible news but so relieved that you and Michelle walked away unhurt! This site is a godsend when it comes to crisis situations involving our cars. Having Chris and Gordon right there to help and all the members here who can offer support and get you information is a resource that money can't buy. On top of that, your amazing car saved you from serious injury. Eric and I wish you every success in getting your Marauder put back together. Please keep us all posted.

Sorry about the car, doesn't look too bad. What about the tires? Are the rears worn at all? I run the Nitto 555 (265-50-18) all around now and have never had them plane up on me. Did you have the cruise control on?

Very sorry, especially on the way to a meet! Glad you are not hurt.

Glad you are all O K---the Marauder can be fixed. As to the hydroplaning, I was injured in the first aircraft accident totally blamed on hydroplaning---skidded 7800 feet ---decelerated from 110 knots to 100 knots and rotated 90 degrees. Later, I was a co-pilot on a Boeing 707 doing hydroplaning research for NASA. In a nutshell , ANY tire will hydroplane --the speed depends on tire pressure, not weight , believe it or not. The average automobile tire will hydroplane starting at 55MPH. Some tread designs will add a small amount--water depth is a small factor, but any wet surface can cause hydroplaning . PLEASE play it safe and slow down when the pavement is wet. I use my traction control to warn me of loss of traction--no scientific proof this helps, but it has warned me. Just my 2 cents--good luck, Maury

Definitely sooo fortunate no-one got you as you went accross the lanes for sure, and you guys are alright, that is the biggest thing.

I had a flashback to circa 1991 Boston expressway in light snow, same damn thing in my 1988 Cougar XR-7, went from left lane, crossed three lanes, ended up facing traffic in breakdown lane having hit NOTHING, not even guardrail... sat there for about 15 minutes hoping no one head on'd me and turned sucka around and out of there, WAS MY LUCKY DAY !

Thanks everyone for the kind notes and well wishes. We are thankful to walk away from this uninjured and unscathed. I'll admit in that split second moment when i was skidding around and slamming into the guardrail, i felt extremely confident that my wife and I would be fine. Really. I don't know how to describe it except the fact that i felt absolutely safe in my Marauder. I was actually running through damage control in my head at the time.

After reading several posts, I am feeling much more positive about my Marauder being fixable. I am glad. as most of us are with our Marauders we have a close bond , almost like a friend. To have another Marauder and start the whole process from scratch would be ok, but it just wouldnt be the same. I want my MM back with all of it's follies and idiosyncrasies. Over the years, I made it to what I want, and I just don't want to duplicate the effort

My wife says that I needed a new paint job and maybe this will be good time to get a rear spoiler from SPARTA :)

Ryan sorry to hear about this. I think we may have a bunch of body parts you can use headlights too. Just PM me when you figure out what you need. They will be DTR colored. I believe the quarter panel is in good shape it will just need to be cut off. We have a good black hood just needs paint.

Awesome thanks so much Chris! The outpouring of support and body parts is just phenomenal. I am working on selecting the shop now and will hopefully have an idea of parts i need and replaced very soon. I will definitely keep the headlights in mind, as those will be a necessity.

Interesting info Maury, I too have the Nitto 420's and they are starting to show their age. I was worried about the tread depth and how the 420's look a bit like slicks! I run with the TC on all the time and make sure tire pressures are good, still need to be very careful in the wet!

Good luck on getting your MM back on the road!

Was so glad to hear that you and Michelle were not injured in the mishap. Doesn't look too bad. From the initial phone call, I had pictured much more extensive damage to the front end, fender and rear fascia. Bad enough though; but it looks fixable.

Got the phone call from Gordon & Chris just as I was turning in to the Captain Dan's parking lot at 1:00 PM. As usual, I was the 1st one there. Captain Dan came out to supervise the parking. He had 12 spots roped off with the yellow tape. The others began to show up between 1:00 - 1:30 PM or so.

I didn't let Uncle Dan know about your incident until a spoke to Gordon again and was sure that you had contacted your family. Let the rest of the MM gang know the situation ..... you both were OK and that the car was being flatbedded back to Middletown. Everyone was concerned. Got an update from Captain Dan after he spoke to you and let everyone know that you weren't going to make the meet.

Really sorry to hear about your accident. :( Hope your MM is back on the road soon.

Yeah Gordon let me know about that so I will keep in mind. Honestly I wont know the full severity of the damage until i get the car into the shop. The tow truck will come and take it to one of Nationwide's Preferred On Your Side shop This allows me to keep a rental car unlimited, but now i dont know if Nationwide will cut me a check directly or will they pay the shop? That is the big unknown. I'd rather have them cut me the check so i can purchase all the parts i need for cheaper, you know? Can I request that from my insurance?

I have Nationwide insurance. I don't know what the $$ is yet but the body shop called me & said damages were already over $10k. It was just a lot of tiny pieces that were crumpled/smashed not visibly seen on the outside. The body shop had reached their "total loss threshold" & had to lock in rate & call insurance

I expect to get the call from Nationwide on Monday but I don't expect positive news:(

yes but it will have a "salvaged" title. to prevent it from being a total the adjuster can write it just under totalling and cut you a check for that amount. The rest is on you, and you won't be able to supplement the ins co for any more money on this claim.

thanks Jay, sorry the gang missed you at Uncle Dan's. Hate for you to come back to the site to see something like this. Anyways, we have to catch up soon. You still have my growler

03AUG2012: UPDATE for everyone:

well I have had such an up and down week, it's not even funny. I received the call from the Body shop on Friday 27 July. They had to lock the car in since they reached the 75% threshold on damage. He said after taking the car apart there was a lot of smaller components that needed to be replaced. The estimate was locked in at $10,150.

I received an estimate of Record and I admit the shop went out of its way to find OEM parts for cheap.

Front Bumper $500
Rear Bumper $ 625
Front header panel $250
Front Headlamp $131
RT Fender $243
RT Qrtr & lower rear $312
Taillamp $118

We all saw that from the pictures I posted. But once they started digging deeper we found:

Rear floor plan $517
Rear body panel $108
Center floor plan $681
Rt rear extension $80

And the prices could go higher as they start working on it as more pieces could be damaged. So like I said, they locked it in. The adjustor made an appointment to take a look at it but they guy at the body shop told me that he steps away from total losses. It doesnt end up nice for anyone, since the estimate can really go a lot higher and/or there might be issues down the road.

I received the call from the Total Loss claims and chatted with the woman who was very friendly. We went over all the options and gave me my evaluation (which i promptly contested :)) and received my report.

The goal at first was to buy the car back, get parts for it from you guys on the forums and anywhere else and just take the car to another shop to fix it up. after speaking with the adjustor and the Body Shop today, I am thinking it's just better to cut my losses and move on :( As much as I hate to say it, i think it's better in the long run. I also don't think Virginia law allows you to put a car that is more than 90% total loss back on the road. Ever. And really, who knows what kind of headaches i will have.

so it is with heavy, yet hopeful heart that I put Nu-NRG Rauder to sleep, but the Marauder chapter in my life is far from over. The search is on. I am thinking that the next Marauder I want, is the one that Nu-NRG Rauder was destined to eventually become: supercharger, exhaust, well maintained. etc. I've already reached out to a couple folks who have been extremely helpful and courteous.

I do intend to buy my car back and then will most likely start dismantling and selling parts, so please stay tuned for that.

Thanks for reading and all the posts in the thread. I really do appreciate it. All the support and offers to help with replacement parts is truly outstanding. I can't fathom what kind of emotional state i'd be in if not for the support of the MM.net site and friends and family. Thank you

I know it sucks to let "your" marauder go, but in the end, if you look hard enough and be patient, you will find exactly the marauder you wanted "your" marauder to be.

My brother got rear ended in his 25 year old grand marquis sometime last year. They were saying something to the effect that the other insurance company was just going to pay the current value of the car and tow it away since the damage and age would consider it totalled. But he loves that car so when he went to the body shop, he had parts he paid for already in hand. The other insurance company paid for the body work and they didn't officially "total" the car because the cost they were going to pay for was now just under the value of the car. Its unfortunate that my brother paid as much out of pocket as he did for the original shelf stock parts but his car is back on the road and he is happy again with original parts.

He is at 250,000 miles and trying to go for another 250,000

That sucks. I'm glad you're staying in the MM game. I wish I had bought one with a supercharger.

Thanks man. As I said before the cars crumple zones & bumper guards did their job. We are very lucky but sad to put another Marauder out of commission

Subscribing. Could use something (don't know what yet...your stock tips perhaps), from your car Mebot.

The car did it's job. You two are safe. VERY happy to hear.

Thank you. Yes I will be buying the car back and stripping useable parts. I will most likely link from this thread to the For Sale forum and update accordingly.

The tips were not damaged in the accident IIRC. Might have a little road wear on them. If you are interested i will try to get some pictures posted of all parts. This will be an ongoing work in progress

I'm sorry to hear your car suffered the same fate as my Marquis. :(

If you pull the motor, maybe I'll be in the market for that, since mine is toast right now.

Ill keep you in mind but I've already received a verbal offer for both engine & trans. However I think I may pull both & drop it into my '68 Cougar :)

dibs on the JLT cold air intake. Let me know when to come pick it up :)

Maybe the proguard as well, if you don't want it for some reason...

More importantly...what is the update on your next MM?

Haha well I'll keep you in mind for the JLT and the ProGuard. Honestly a lot is going to depend on what my next Marauder currently has and what I am going to switch. Haggis and I are going to work on getting the car stripped as soon as possible, but it might be a long time, as he is in MD and I live in VA. Weekends are a precious commodity as it is.

As for my next MM, I am keeping my options open but I have reached out to a couple folks. There are some really nice Marauders for sale right now. I am waiting on Insurance too. I contested the value they gave me and actually they came back with what I was looking for, so I'm kind of happy about that. Once the funds clear, I will be taking the next steps into getting another MM!

Really sucks that it's total but at least you and Michelle are still with us and I know you will be enjoying another MM sometime in the future.

I may be interested in some parts and could help with the tear down if needed.

thanks Chris i appreciate it man. It's a damn shame. You really feel like you lost your best friend when something like this happens. We all know how .... ahem... (I hate saying this word because the little schoolgirl giggle always comes out) but just how intimate we are with our cars. We know every nook, bolt, issue, cranny, particle ... everything. It's hard trying to start anew, but its also refreshing since there are things i'm looking at with my car that I wish I could change, and this is the perfect time to do it.

As for the parts, i'll keep you in mind. Feel free to PM me if you know right now what you're in the market for. I'll try to keep a tally of who wants what etcetera...

For those of us who have modified our cars, the car is really just an extension of the owner and their personality.

I'll shoot you a PM.

Late: I was trying to B kool like my friends in their Challengers and Mustangs by attempting to drift around this corner doin about 35. $10,500+ and a month+ later, I still don't know why they didn't total mine. I still don't think that it looks/rides the same but all the dealers that I've taken it to since say that it's all good. Glad that you're OK.
