I know there was a discussion a while back on cruising tunes, but what about that perfect song you have cued up at the stoplight?

I'll start.

"The Race" by Yello
"You Really Got Me" by Van Halen
"Going the Distance" by Cake (or is it just "The Distance?")
"Hammer to Fall" by Queen

There are others but those spring to mind.

The one that has been creeping up on me lately is track 15 from the "Pirates of the Carribean" CD. It seems I drive faster every time I hear it.

"Running with the Devil" Van Halen
Anything by Rammstein.
Most of the hard stuff by Nickleback.
"Headstrong" I forget who - it's newer ("I'll take you on, I'll take on anyone..")
"High Speed Dirt" by Megadeth
"Black Sunshine" by Rob Zombie - works best just before open highway. A line: "The wheels of his Mustang exploding on the highway like a slug from a .45. True death. 400 horsepower of maximum performance..."

Just a few of my favorites.

Now this is my kind of car club... I can honestly say I can gel with all the songs listed here (yes, even the Leonard Cohen... believe it or not, I am sitting here in front of my computer with the "I'm Your Man" CD - I never realized all these years that "First We Take Manhattan" was engineered right here in Montreal at Studio Tempo!).

My music interests are broad, so putting down a list is futile. But I'll add one from a CD I just recently picked up, which believe it or not I never owned on vinyl all these years. It's from the Sticky Fingers album by the Stones...
"Can't You Hear me Knocking".

I LOVE the guitar play on that song... especially the first "part".

Detroit Rock City (KISS) was mentioned earlier... just this week I got drafted into service by a band for a charity gig this coming May. This is one of the tunes slated for performance (probably half a tone higher than the album). Definitely one of my favorite KISS tunes ever! I might even bring out my old ominous-looking early-80s BC Rich Mockingbird bass just for that tune...

As an IT consultant, all I can sell is intellectual property. If my customers could have me develop a solution to their problem and then distribute it without paying me I'd be broke and on the street.:nono:

I own the legal orignal source for every bit of music I posess. And I have 4500 lps and 1600 CDs.

For that relaxing drive ...
Shepherd Moons - Enya ( entire CD )
You just jogged my memory regarding some songs that bring back a lot of good driving memories by mentioning Enya...
(her Watermark album is by far my favorite, although the most recent one is VERY good as well...)

I recall many late nights coming home from work in 1993 and 1994, coming down the street in my GTA towards my parents' house at 3:00 am or around there, and having Alice in Chain's Down in a Hole or Them Bones at absolute ear-splitting volume on the factory system. Hearing Down in a Hole still raises the hair on the back of my head...

And in a more moody relaxing vein, I still recall back in 1988 or 1989 coming out of a Christmas party in the dark early morning hours of December 26th to fire up the old Parisienne, snow falling on the quiet streets, and putting on the radio to hear Big Log off Robert Plant's Principle of Moments album. What a mood piece! Consequently, that album has what I consider 2 nice cruising songs... Big Log and also In the Mood.

Damn I need spring... soon...

Remembered another good one today...

Not what you would consider fitting the general direction of the thread, but a freaking excellent tune for riding down an empty 2 laner with the sun at your back and the T-tops off... The Sound of Goodbye by Perpetuous Dreamer. Seems like your run-of-the-mill Trance club track, except the music and the rhythm are conducive to some excited driving, and there's a nice rich melodious background that appeals to my musical side. And the singer's voice is very emotion-filled... overall a great package and stands apart from some of the mindless Trance / Trip-Hop stuff that was out there over the past 3 years. This particular song was big in European clubs, and was featured on some Florida club-compilation CDs in 2000.

One more thing... I too have to ask what is "One O'Clock Jump"... unfortunately, it doesn't register at all in my memory...

I guess I shouldn't be surprised that many of you don't know this song. The version I have is from the late 30's. "One O'Clock Jump" is the signature song by the Count Basie Band, arguably the coolest of the swing bands. It has a great groove to drive to. Y'all owe it to yourselves to rediscover the old swing bands. There was a lot of great music from before the rock era. Most of it is being forgotten by the mainstream. Even head banging metal-heads can get behind "Swing, Swing, Swing". Remember that most of this was dance music and it was before amplifiers were common. So there was a great beat and driving horns and powerful drumming.

Try Count Basie, Artie Shaw, Benny Goodman, Louis Jordan, Duke Ellington to start.

There is nothing cooler than blowing some some rice-boy's rap crap off the road with the power of a 5 piece horn section.

I grew up listening to Swing. My Dad was a big Harry James, Glenn Miller, the Dorsey Brothers and Benny Goodman fan. Just wish I knew how to jitterbug!!

Check out audio samples of some of the most favorite Swing tunes! One O'Clock Jump is on disc 3.

I still love that soundtrack album. Best new version of Sing, sing sing (with a swing) I have.

Pump it loud going in the twisties! Same with Vivaldi's Four seasons, Summer (Adagio / Presto) in F Major. I think the passage is called 'Summer Storm'. You'd all know it if you heard it. And there's a passage from the Opera 'Carmina Brununa' on the Doors soundtrack that rocks too.

Hear hear! Guess after which one of the above I'm named. My Dad saw some of those people live, growing up in Toronto. You forgot Slim Gaillard too :)
