So, my code 19 airbag light has turned into loss of cruise control and intermittent loss of the indicator lamps on the steering wheel. Kind of good news I suppose in that it confirms that it's time for a clockspring replacement.

I've searched here and googled and followed the Youtube videos, so I have a somewhat feel for what to do. However, dealing with airbags makes me a bit nervous, so I'd like to confirm:

Other than removing the neg from the battery and waiting awhile is there anything else or other precaution to take to disarm the airbag so it doesn't blow up in my face?

Once disarmed, I assume the steps are:

Remove Steering wheel cover (any tricks/traps to be aware of here?)

Disconnect airbag (single connector?)

Loosen Steering wheel nut to the very end of shaft but don't remove. Use this as a stop while wiggling wheel off....Or rent a steering wheel puller.

Remove clockspring and install new one with locking tab in place to keep centered.

Once new one installed, remove locking tab

Re-install Nut, airbag, and cover....reconnect battery and pray the airbag doesn't explode :D

No there is nothing to worry about, once the battery has been disconnected. We do it all of the time. I would definitely recommend getting a steering wheel puller. Take your time, have the right tools and it will go easy.

That'd be great Jim...

I need to find the part, however. Rockauto, Advance, Autozone, don't seem to carry it....Anyone have a recommendation for where to purchase?

tascaparts.com

They sell only OEM Ford/Motorcraft parts.

Jim,

I'll definitely take you up on that offer if the part comes in...UPS quoted 3 to 5 days, so it might not arrive by Saturday. However, need to get by anyway and check out some of your goodies.
