That was an incredible feat!

Gotta believe that's a record that's going to stand for a while... ;)

It was pretty cool.

With all of Felix' pauses toward the end and on the threshold, I had to wonder if he was wondering what he had gotten himself into.

Also, why did he deploy the chute before he had broken the freefall record?

Was he trying to preserve Col. Kittinger's record?

The kids and I saw that....it was a great experience to see that with them.

I think there was some communication issues....I could hear him say something about falling for a long time.....but the guy on the ground in mission control I guess couldnt understand him....that prolly why he popped the chute early.

I went to a presentation by Kittenger hosted by a friend of mine.

Kittenger said there were many mock jumps to get everything down to a smooth repetitve motion.

The day of his jump one of the workers proudly told him he made a new bench for his jump as the old one was worn.

Kittenger tries to jump and he is stuck in the new bench which was apparently smaller than the old bench. He tried several times, he then put a big effort into it and got free from the bench.

He also said he got a hole in his glove and his hand swelled up several times it's normal size.

He said the driver behind the reserach he was doing was pilot emergency ejections.

that was a crazy thing, loved it, was the chute maybe designed to pull automatically based on the jump parameters and not left in Felix's hands? It must have been set to deploy auto in the event he lost consciousness at least.

I watched the whole drama unfold and wondered about the visor heater....he has to see......lucky it worked though he said he couldn't see just before he deployed his chute....WOW!!

What about the size of the balloon at 0.01 PSI "Float Altitude"??

Did ya notice how bad he was spinning before the chute deployed??

Terminal velocity in the record book.....834 MPH.....DOUBLE WOW!!

Shear guts and cajones!!

Watched it all live - amazing stuff. I thought I heard the chute was auto set by altitude, but am not certain on this. Imagine seeing that view above and knowing the only way down is to jump off...

A really great jump. Congratulation to Felix and the entire crew. Amazing pictures! Did you notice that the sky was totally black and not blue anymore when he stud outside of the capsule?

As far as i understand from an austrian interview Felix said he deployed the parachute at 5200 meters. The predefined hight was 5000 m. In case the parachute don't open he'd have to get rid of it and use the emergency one. Due to his own conditions he thought a bit more time would be nice for that procedure.
And yes there were several automatic actions programmed in case he don't do it manually. One was the automatic deploy of the parachute. Another thing was a G-sensor which would deploy a stabilizing parachute in case he spin too long or too fast.

By the way, another record was set: Youtube sent 8 million live streams, the old record from 2009 when Obama became President had 7 million visitors.

TooManyFords I missed the part when the cat jumped. His erection, no ejection, no freefall lasted 4 minutes plus. 800MPH plus is fast. He had a Marauder waiting on the ground. Maybe a sponge to clean up if his shute failed.
Great moment in history.

I must say 25 miles is impressive, the closest thing to this I can remember has to be this classic moment, and he actually survived, AMAZING !!!
