Where you are located, are there many places to "plug in"? Here the only places I have seen are a Chevy dealer (for the Volt) and the local casino.

I've seen quite a few out here. And my employer has a charging station in the back of the parking lot that people can create an account, login, and pay for the electricty charging while they work.

At an offsite work event, they took us to the Tesla show room. They had a computer there were you could calculate your electric costs vs gasoline, power plant emissions vs fossil fuels etc. It was a nice car for sure, but still too expensive for me. And it also showed by state how much of the electricity in that state was from renewable energy such as windfarms, hyrdro, etc.

88LTDCV351
10-24-2012, 10:51 AM
Oh yeah, and the Tesla you could either plug into a clothes dryer plug or get a small adaptor to use a regular outlet. I was amazed by that since when electric cars first came out they originally tried to tell you that you had to buy some expensive machine to charge the car at your home. Not anymore apparently.

And I also recall something about, just like the Prius, if you take the battery to the proper place, they do recycle it or dispose of it properly when its useful life is gone.

there a quite a few places all over.I'm kind of suprised that a buch of gear heads know very little about this up and coming technology.this is the future of motoring as I see it. the $$ is the reason . The car was cheap.way more features then the beloved marauder...sorry but, probably faster then any stock marauder---O'ya & cost 1.50 to do what the marauder & others cost $20 to do..I'm no expert..but take the head out of the sand.FYI this thing can be charged vitualy anywhere...

No way the a Leaf is faster than a stock Marauder, unless said Marauder is in Park.

Nissan Leaf 0-60 is a tad over 7 seconds and the Marauder is a tad under 7, per a quick google search. The Nissan Leaf tops out at 92mph. I am traveling faster than that at the end of the 1/4 mile.

As for cheap, maybe the build, but the sticker price is almost 40K! I do not know how much money you make, but to 40K for a car is not cheap to me. The most expensive car I have bought was a used 2004 GMC Sierra for 21K out the door when it was 3 years old.

Don't get me wrong, the Leaf looks to be nice electric car, but that is all. If I am buying electric, I will go get the new Tesla sedan with 300+ hp/tq.

I am wanna be gear head, and I know a little about electric cars. Currently they are overpriced and cheaply built. They are the wave of the future, but like the first model year of a new car, dont buy into the gadgets until they are proven to be reliable. :D

A $40K "golf cart" seems a bit crazy!!

$1.50 per 100 miles is great but how long before ya recover your initial cash outlay..........especially when you only make it across 75 miles of a 100 mile desert?? :argue: :mad2:  :shake: OOOPS.....no plug-in out here!!!:mad2::bigcry:

Its a great idea with electric motors, but the milespan has much to be improved on, which better batteries are needed. The current world as we know it just doesnt have the technolgy like this....yet. On high mileage trips....take a generator and charge up when needed:lol:

Oh, but we don't want to consider that, now do we?

If electric cars were all that great, they'd be selling a bazillion of them, but alas, that's not the case.

Not long ago I was cruising along down state highway 35, just piddling around, and was passed at the same time by a Chevy Volt and a Nissan Leaf. I took a picture because it was a rare sight, but at the same time I wondered how much longer it would be before it was NOT a rare sight.

^^^ That's a tough one.
They make so much sense with the price of gas (never to drop drastically) / polution / resourse depleating.
But oddly, when polls are taken of people that own / owned electric and hybrid vehicles; the majority say they would not buy again.
Strange.

Strange.

We own a Ford Escape Hybrid, and it's been a good, reliable vehicle for us, but I'm one of those who would not buy again.

We got X-Plan pricing, Ford rebates, and took advantage of the tax incentives available back in '06 when we bought the vehicle, and at that time my payback model indicated about a 4 1/2 to 5 year payback on the cost differential between the Hybrid and a gas powered Escape (based on gas savings). I re-ran the numbers last year, and using a lower than forecast gas price (historical average since '06) and an actual average mileage that was less than the EPA estimates, it actually took us closer to 6 years to recover the higher cost (and I didn't factor in cost of cash valuation).

Although hybrid technology appeals to me, the business case just isn't there, so yeah, next time around, we're going with a gas model.

Ive read somewhere that the epa evalutes motors and mileage the same as they did back in like the 70s or 80s, thats why their estimates are always way off, I think the mm was rated something like 25mpg highway....the closest ive come was 22

WOW! Do you ever drive over 30 mph? ;) ------> :D

I can hit 22 on the highway if I stay between 62 - 68 mph, above, that I start to see a drop, 70 -75 will give me 19 - 21 (if I can keep out of the boost...:o).

Since the leaf is electric power, I guess one of those ebay electric superchargers would actually make it LOSE power? I guess it would be cool to install one anyway. When people asked what you drove, you could say, "A Leafblower"!!!!!!!!

The only place I've actually seen one of these is in ads or in video games.

They actually included one in the Forza series of racing games. A friend and I modded one out completely (still keeping the all-electric design), and got it to run a 13.9 in the virtual 1/4 mile. Maybe I'd consider one once that becomes a reality. :)

Keep it out of the boost??? How ya do that Rex?

I'm good with all forms of mobility but:
1. Don't want someone elses preference rammed down my throat... Would rather let the free market decide....
2. Don't want to be out on the roadway with a mode of transpo that may create dangerous situations for the majority of motorists consuming established transpo options......
----If in an accident, what is the impact of that vehicle on people/infrastructure/envirornment???
----Are first responders put at risk dealing with one of these vehicles? Are they properly equipped to do so?
----Will these vehicles create unsafe situations for traditional motorist? Will there be adequate and redundant warnings so that their failure/power drain will not impact traffic???

Those are my concerns..... I think people understand the overall envirornmental impact of the raw material supply chain to finished product pretty well..... They know that its more impact to manufacture parts and assemble an EV vs. an internal combustion vehicle of the same size....

We need more choices.... Not just ones appealing to bureaucrats in D.C. and their cronies.... If their is enough appeal, the crossover will occur organically..... For now, for me? I will continue driving my "Hybrid":)

I have a focus electric.Similar to the leaf. The baterrie life of these are expected to be about 150-200 k miles.the pack currently is about 5k to replace.About the cost of a gas motor to replace.that is a brand new pack ,also.the sticker price is one thing. The actual cost after incentives is about 16k.Not bad for a new car. Also the payment is 100% covered by gas and maintenance savings. So, the car is basically FREE.Electric cars really are quick ,also.

My wifeys new job will make her drive about 45 minutes into the city (big time traffic) right now she drives a bad ass Corvette but in our state if you buy a electric car (Chevy Volt-Ford Fusion -Tesla etc.) she gets to drive in the HOV lane. This will take about 15 minutes off her time.
So it looks like I am going to do something I never dreamed of and buy a Volt or a Fusion (Leaf? - no thanks).

The new way to charge is a inductive mat that you put in your garage and when you park the car at home over it, it charges itself without plugging it in. There are a few company's bringing this inductive charging to market soon.

I could care less about gas mileage, told the wife we should dump gas out of a gas can as we drive it just to piss off the environmentalist going down the highway.
I want the car just so my wife can use the HOV lane to avoid traffic.

this 3 year old thread shows time is changing.Gas is now $1.43 per gallon here. The electric propulsion cars are now selling 12k units per month.Ford and others state that 60% plus of their vehicles will offer electrification.a 220 volt home charger is about $250 vs 1k+.range of batteries have basically 50% more or doubled.when driving I see endless electrified vehicle vs the rare spotting just 3 years ago.
