yeah I saw this when it came out on Thurs. honestly not as impressed as I thought I would be. it's going to be tough to try & condense Brooks' novel into a full length feature film, especially considering the format of the book.
for those that don't know the way World War Z is written is a first person narrative of survivors of the zombie war. basically each chapter is an account from a survivor from different parts of the world: a renegade russian commander of a nuclear submarine, a blind japanese man, a family of four from new york that travels north to canada, etc..
the novel is really well done and id suggest reading it 1st before watching the film. the book goes and tries to answer all the questions about the zombie apocalypse (& there are pretty terrifying conclusions at the end, no spoiler here!) but also things that make you scratch your head & say "huh"?
anyways I thought I would be more impressed with the trailer but I'm not. I guess I will have to wait & see. I'm just afraid this will turn into a 28 days later-resident evil-dawn of the dead kind of movie...& it really shouldn't be. for fans of the novel, at least

yeah def read the book if you can before you see the movie. it's really well written & thought provoking. it's less of a "horror" zombie scare novel then most people give it credit for. it takes the zombie genre from a new angle: what happens before, during & AFTER the zombie apocalypse. how did the world cope & fight back? it's first hand accounts of people on the front lines & it covers ethics, culture, society, racism etc...
like I said before, the novel is excellent & I just hope the movie can do it justice.

I started to re-read Max Brooks' World War Z in anticipation of this film. I read an article yesterday in the Washington Post. Here's the link :
http://www.washingtonpost.com/world/asia_pacific/iron-man-takes-heroic-efforts-to-satisfy-chinas-state-censors/2013/05/06/62d11e08-b62e-11e2-92f3-f291801936b8_story.html
But I'll summarize: China has a very lucrative film market. Hollywood knows that if they can secure the rights to release a film in China, they stand to reap hundreds of millions of dollars. But China has a censorship board and they only approve 34 movies a year.
so American films will change certain elements or plot lines to appease this board in hopes that their film will be selected to be released in China
Case in point: Iron Man 3- the name of Ben Kingsley’s villain, the Mandarin, was stripped of any Chinese association by transliterating his name as “Man Daren,” which has no meaning in Chinese.
The most jarring changes, however, were a few minutes of footage added to the film, including the opening plug for the drink from an Inner Mongolia-based company — a sweet mixture of milk, grains and food additives — which viewers are told, via a commercial-like bit of bold text stripped across the screen, can revitalize Iron Man's energy
So while reading this article and starting to re-read World War Z, I found out that in order to release WWZ in China, Producers of WWZ changed Patient Zero's origination to Russia instead of China.
Anyways, I'm looking forward to the film and i'm enjoying the book again. I highly recommend it to anyone before you watch the film.

It's out now. Has anyone seen it yet? I finished re-reading the book a couple weeks ago. The reviews I've read have been somewhat positive. I think the praise so far is that it's not a BIG LOUD DUMB zombie film, but rather has substantial elements of an intelligent thriller (think Outbreak and Contagion).
I don't know when I will be able to see it. I have a bad habit of seeing films finally when they release on DVD.

Reading the book first most always ruins you for the movie. You're in anticipation for things that can't/don't show up in the movie. Books leave you to your own interpretations, not someone else's vision of how it should be.
