A while back I posted this in the "What did you do to your car today" thread:

A friend of mine called me to help pull the engine from his 69 Firebird as it developed an internal noise. After disassembly, this is what I found...

Either it had one of those HP 2-piece cranks or we found the problem! :shake:

Well, after he got the replacement block, different heads, a new rod, new pistons, new cam & valve-train and a few Saturday afternoons - this is how it looks today:

New toploader Monster 5 spd also.

Going to drop back in car next Saturday. :burnout:

Damn. Worst I ever seen. If I was on my computer id share a picture of a 1987 camaro that I was running nitruous through. Melted pistons due to an early press of the red button. The crank is just gone. Awesome picture but what happened ?

The guy that owned the car was an ignorant butcher. Entire car is a mess but at least is a solid starting point.

We were going to pull motor & rebuild next year but this pushed up the timeline.

Engine never made more than 25psi oil pressure with a supposedly high pressure/volume pump in it and there was some valve train ticking.

Apparently he had wrong heads on it, CR too high. Timing was way wrong.

He pulled away from stop and ir went bang... :shake:

Haha thats great. People that dont know how to cook shouldnt cook and people who cant build engines should watch other people build their engines.

Very nice work!

Thanks. There's a lot of "temporary" going on. Just needed to get it started & break in done before it sits for the winter. Would suck to wait till spring to fire up & find machine shop screwed something up when its too late to take back to them.

Temp fuel rail while waiting for permenant Tri-Power one, temp upper rad hose, temp vacuum lines & PCV, etc.

Spring time will bring all the fun stuff. Setting up all the permanent install stuff, heard an exhaust leak and I can tell I'll be doing a lot of carb work to get set up dialed in.

The temp work is good like you said to find any possible problems. Just think of it as mocking it up first. But possibly write down what your just doing temp so you don't forget it if your like me.

Would like to know more about the engine parts and what size c.i. it is. What kind of numbers are you estimating?

Factory 400.

Can't tell you more than that. This is his project. I have always done everything for him with him assisting.

This time he wanted to do it all himself. I'm just supervising and correcting anything that needs help.

Well after letting it sit for the winter, Mike has been working on things for past few weekends.

We had to do some custome gasket work to mate the 3x2 intake to these heads.

He called me in for some help as it was not running right after reinstalling intake.

Found 2 carb linkages backwards but main issue was missing throttle return spring on the rear carb. With the throttle not closing fully = big vacuum leak.

Installed a new spring, corrected linkages, adjusted secondary activation linkage, re-timed ignition, adjusted Primary ilde jets and runs pretty darn good.

It's a driveshaft & hood install away from a maiden voyage.

There is nothing sweeter than hearing a 3X2 system work except a 2X4's I used to have on my 57chevy! Sounded like a freight train!
