May have forgotten about it, perhaps the most awesome Marauder burnout I've seen. Dig that rolling start! Back in high school, that's how we judged them. Anyone can powerbrake, it's real torque to smoke from a roll! :bows:

Yeah, I heard that rev limiter while you were in first gear also. That's a very familiar sound to me, cuz my car does that in first gear from a dead punch also. However the difference is that once your car hits second, that's when you really start to smoke em up really good. Nice one! Too bad you kinda ran out of room there, cuz it was just starting to get real good when you let off the gas.
But then again, I'm sure you wanted to leave some rubber on your tires too. Thanks for posting this Todd, cuz I never saw it before.

Thanks for posting that Tod. I haven't seen that video for a long time.
This was a neat day. This was the delivery day to the original owner of the car, Mensrea.
The action happened in front of the shop here at KB Performance with our tech doing the driving. It was in the middle of November here in Indy, obviously overcast and about 40 degree's.
Fun times.....

Hey, I know there's a difference in superchargers, but what exactly makes the Crown Vic sound more growly in the videos? Don't get me wrong, I love the Marauder, but somehow, the Vic sounded sweeter...

I thought you would know this if anyone--
Uh! Exhaust system's sound can be trickey--to the point of suspecting something that is not what you had originally thought--so almost anything CAN sound "good" or "bad" -- it just may not be what it really is like--then again--there is always someone who is able to "Beat you" -on which case --you know you have been running with one who respects you and your vehicle cause you both know the drill --or should know it!!
woaface
03-04-2004, 09:06 PM
Lol, wait wait!! I know the whole exhaust thing and how someone can always top so to speak what you've got. But I was wanting to know, more or less, what the difference was between the two cars...just the exhaust or exhaust and charger combination? I figure the latter, but I've never really heard something sound so mechanical, yet still very natural...and altogether beefy at the same time...it just sounds awesome...

I see what you're talking about Jim. yes, I agree w/you that the crown vic video does sound better. I think it's merely because it didn't hit the rev limiter like the Marauder did in first gear. When you rev so much that you're getting into the rev limiter, it causes the engine to break up and sound like it's misfiring.
That's what my car does in first gear during a burnout, and not only does it cause a loss of power, but it sounds lousy. That's why I'm planning on raising the rev limiter w/out raising the shift points, so that when I do a burnout, it will not be getting into the rev limiter before it hits second gear.
Ya also gotta wonder what all that white smoke was that it shows coming out of the exhaust pipes. I mean there was almost as much smoke coming out of the tailpipes as there was off the back tires in that other video.

Oh gotcha, after listening a second time I hear that.
Yeah, for half of that burnout it was mostly exhaust smoke. Must have been cold for this video and someone wasn't warmed up yet:up:
BTW I love the rims on the Vic. I figure they'd fit my Marquis? Ooooo....

The main difference in the exhaust note is that the Crown Vic has a 2 valve engine as opposed to the Marauders 4 valve. This gives the deeper exhaust note, similar to a Mustang GT, also that Vic is equipped with Dynomax Mufflers.

Yes, those rims will fit your Grand Marquis if it is a '02 or earlier model. They are 18X8 Ronal R7's.

so what was w/all that exhaust smoke? That wasn't merely cold weather. That looked like a blown head gasket or something. The only time I've ever seen smoke that white coming from an exhaust pipe is when there was antifreeze getting into the cylinders past the head gaskets.

No that isn't smoke from antifreeze, we wouldn't have run the car if that was happening. It was November and the temperature was 35 to 40 degree's. Simply Hot exhaust meeting the Cool air.
BillyGman
03-05-2004, 07:47 PM
Okay Dave, I must admit I'm a bit skeptical about that being the reason for the smoke since it does look excessive. However, I also admit that it would be wrong for me not to give you the benefit of the doubt on that since I wasn't there and you were. So thankyou for your reply.
As far as the difference in the exhaust note of the Marauder and the Crown Vic in those two video clips, can it be that the Marauder had a stock exhaust system, or maybe simply stock mufflers? Because if it did, then that would also be atleast one of the factors for that Crown Vic sounding better since it didn't have stock mufflers. Right?
woaface
03-05-2004, 07:57 PM
I'd be willing to believe that, when it was between 30 and 40º here I'd see that much (maybe a little less) coming from cars out and about that have just started.
BillyGman
03-05-2004, 08:18 PM
well, maybe, maybe not. But it isn't even worth debating about since it was Dave who was actually there for the shooting of that video. Furthermore, I wouldn't want to be too quick to insinuate that a pro like Dave doesn't know what he's talking about since I'm sure that he does.
However Jim, since you have previously brought up what I think is a valid point about the Crown Vic actually sounding better, I feel it would clarify the matter if Dave can tell us exactly what exhaust was on the Marauder in question(stock, or otherwise), because it sounded like a stock exhaust to me. It also sounds like it was simply reving higher than the Crown Vic was, which the higher RPM itself would aslo be a possible cause for the different sound, along w/the fact that it was definatley getting into the rev limiter, while the Crown Vic was NOT.

You know, I like the red quite a bit.
Do you think because the engine being more powerful and putting out such hot gas makes the extra condesation?
I do love the engine note quite a bit though...whooo sounds nice!

My god I remember that video and that day... the good old days... Take it from me ... that was plain old exhaust smoke, nothing else :banana2: . I still love that car!!!!! You guys should see the other videos, especially the one where they say "hey Bill needs new tires!". What a blast we had.
BillyGman
03-06-2004, 12:58 AM
mensrea, how about that exhaust on that Marauder? Was it all stock? What about the mufflers specifically? Were they stock? it sounds like they were, and that might explain why the Crown Vic sounded better, since it had after market mufflers on it (according to David)..

Come on guys, this is Kenny Brown we are talking about here.... have you ever driven one of his cars??? No rev limiter issues what so ever, never had em never will.. The car drove AWESOME. I dont think the car ever saw its rev limiter, theoretically speaking to hit the rev limiter we would have to have been going WOT in top gear, aint gonna happen in a parking lot (shifts below limiter). I think if the car were bouncin on the limiter, AutoWeek, Car and Driver and Mr. Bernstein might have had some comment about the car in their reviews, didn't happen :) :) :bounce: But hey I am biased as hell......
MAC, I am goin to get my car at the end of March......Jim finished the motor today :).....wanna road trip for the dyno tune?

03-06-2004, 01:42 PM
Mensrea, first let me thank you for answering my question about weather or not the mufflers and exhaust in your Kenny Brown Marauder were stock. It sounded to me by that video that they were. The reason for my focus on these things is because of Jim's question about why the Kenny brown Crown Vic sounds better in these video clips than the Marauder does, and because of David's statement that it's merely because of the choice of after market mufflers installed in the Crown Vic. I wanted to make sure that people understand that the Kenny Brown Marauder(as well as any other Marauder) will sound better w/after market mufflers just as that Crown vic did.
As for the rev limiter issue, again thanks for your explaination. Please don't take my coments as being directed at the Kenny Brown cars specifically. I have absolutely nothing negative to say about them.
I was simply focusing on the rev limiter issue because my car hits it during first gear while performing a burnout w/out the brake. And that's the only time that it does. It sounds to me that the Marauder in that video is doing the exact same thing, but perhaps I was all wrong about that, I dunno.
David and the rest of the guys under Kenny Brown are the pros, and after all the ones who were there during the making of that video, so it wouldn't be right for me to argue since I wasn't there myself, nor have I ever even got a ride in a Kenny Brown car. And I've only heard good things about them.
....again, thanks for your explanations guys. ;)
Who the hell cares if it hit the rev limiter or not.
Be glad its there so you DONT blow your engine during a spirited burnout.
My car hits the rev limiter every time I downshift into first, do a burnout or any other stunt in first gear.
If anyone is worried about it, pay the 8 grand to Pauls High Performance and have a stick put in and then blame yourself if you hit the rev limiter because you dont know how to shift
BillyGman
03-06-2004, 04:46 PM
I was merely talking about the way it sounds Zack. The engine just doesn't sound healthy when the rev limiter kicks in because it's breaking up. And yes, it would be different if you had a manual shift transmission. But it doesn't sound right to me that your car gets into the rev limiter every time it downshifts into first.
The rev limiter robs power from the engine when it kicks in, so it shouldn't be kicking in unless it's neccessary. otherwise, it needs to be set for a higher RPM, or the shift points need to be adjusted.

Just an FYI. I did a mini write up on the day these vids were taken. Found here. (http://www.mercurymarauder.net/forums/showthread.php?t=667) However, I would concur that the temps were in the mid 40's and smooth as silk would be a "rough" statement to make about the running of the two cars taped.
Don't get your hopes up too much guys. However, do take note that the brake lights only come on to stop the cars at the end of the burn outs and just prior. NOT DURING. :)
