yesterday, Heber, AZ to Santa Rosa, NM... 391.5 miles according to my odometer. Heber is at an elevation of 6435ft and I topped off the tank with 91 octane Chevron with 10% ethanol. I stopped in Holbrook, AZ to get McDonalds drive-thru and wipe all the winter road grime off the windows before getting on I-40. I-40 has a lot of elevation change in AZ and NM. 5080ft in Holbrook to 7275ft at the continental divide in western NM to 5310ft in Albuquerque, back up to 6600ft 11 miles east of Albuquerque in Zuzax, NM down to 4616ft in Santa Rosa, NM. Lots of elevation change that kills MPG. Cruise control set to 78.
In Santa Rosa, I filled up with 15.5 gallons of 90 octane Shell (highest they had) with 10% ethanol. the pump stopped automatically at 15.2 gallons but i then slowly fill it up until it clicks off 2 more times.
Santa Rosa, NM to Shamrock, TX I got 20.9 MPG (that's typical for me after the 4.10's) cruise control set to 78. 263 miles and I filled up in Shamrock with 12.6 gallons of gas. This leg is a lot flatter but still a gradual down hill from 4616ft to 2343ft in Shamrock.
The weather on both legs was very similar... cold, calm winds and clear skies.
How did I get 25.2 MPG?? a 1 point drop in octane won't affect economy like that. maybe there is something to this Techron stuff?
